Mark Mangino will never be a head coach again, not at this level.

Not at a place like Kansas where he took a basketball school to the Orange Bowl.

Not in the Big 12, where just two years ago he became national coach of the year. It is both troubling and just that Mangino is gone after allegations of verbal and physical abuse of his players. Troubling because if allegations are true, then dozens of coaches and players are guilty of staying silent -- for years.

Only during a season-ending seven-game losing streak did word leak out. Troubling because those same coaches and players were too intimidated to say anything, worried about losing their scholarships or their jobs.

Who knows how many other players and coaches have been put in this situation at other schools? At Kansas, a code of silence enabled a flawed man to allegedly belittle his players. The decision to get rid of the coach is just, because Mangino had to be stopped.

His methods went beyond tough love or aggressive coaching. If only a fraction of the episodes are true -- many will never come to light -- then Mangino has been in denial about his conduct for too long. At this point it seems that the terms of the settlement will keep us from ever knowing the true extent of the alleged abuse. Reports have some of the conduct going back decades to a high school job for Mangino in Pennsylvania.

We can only hope that Mangino becomes a better man. As a coach, he was a discliplinarian, a trait that belied his 400-pound frame. Based on the allegations, anger management counseling might be in order. Let's hope his alleged victims recover too. Now it's time to move on.

Buffalo's Turner Gill is a perfect replacement. Right now, he is No. 1 on AD Lew Perkins' list.

The interest, it seems, is mutual.

A good coach -- and a better man -- for Kansas is waiting in the wings.

Its real easy to call the young men cry babies from behind a computer screen.  All of you are morons, seriously.  See how easy that was for me to do?  Its also easy to say, "Oh c'mon, toughen up!", when its not happening to you.  What do any of you know about proper football discipline.  Name another coach with the prestige of say, Pete Caroll, or Bob Stoops, who belittles and demeans his players the way Mangino allegedly did.  Treating young men like trash does not breed men, it breeds animals.  I hope you all die of AIDs then I can laugh about how you just weren't tough enough. haha, god I love the internet!

Accused of verbal abuse to his players.... What do people honestly think coaches say to their players?  If parents/faculty at my high school knew half the things the coaches used to say to their players, they would be very upset.  These are college players.  These are adults or very close to it.  Don't tell me he has been accused of "verbal abuse".  What a joke

I would hardly call it "immediate success" His first season with KU he went 2-10 and 0-8 in the Big XII. Not exactly a stellar year. He still can't beat the teams from the south. I can't recall exactly his record against the south but the Orange Bowl season was the only one that he beat all the south teams and that was the year they had Baylor, OSU and A&M. WooHoo! Beating OSU now would be a much bigger deal than it was then.

I don't think anyone would have brought up any of these allegations if we had finished stong and maybe finished 8-4 or 9-3. Everyone would have kept their mouths shut because they were winning. But since they were having a bad season they felt it was a good time to bring out the truth. Perhaps they didn't play to their ability because of their lack of respect for the coach. We will never know because Reesing, Meier, Sharp and probably Briscoe are gone.

The chatter on the kusports.com page is that people want Solich or Fulmer or the Old Ball Coach. I think Turner Gill would be a great choice. Seems to be a guy of outstanding character AND a good coach. That could be a nice switch.

I will keep cheering no matter who we get!

you have to be kidding me...this is division one big 12 football...mangino is a great coach and he built this program from a joke to a team that is respected.  you really think urban meyer, or nick saban, or bob stoops, or pete carrol baby their players.  HELL NO.  watch the sec championship game on saturday and see how good coaches treat their players.  You messed up your title on your article, it should be mangino deserves better, he deserves to coach at a school where his players arent weak and actually want to play college division 1 football and be coached by a college division 1 coach.

From what another article was saying. It seems as if Coach Mangino bullied not just a large number of his players, but his assistants (present and former, including one who quit after 2 games with him), two former secretaries, a student working for KU parking department (who gave him a parking ticket), and the referee at his son's HS football game. The guy was also an excellent football coach, but eventually you just have to wonder if it is worth the headache when you're now in the situation where you can get a good coach who doesn't have those problems.
Again, there's the age of discipline, then there's someone with anger problems that lead to PR problems.

I wish Dodd would go as well.  He has no real insight in any sports matters.  He's a punk.  A punk who hides behind a laptop

The age of discipline is dead folks.  No more teaching boys how to be men.  Let's teach them all to cry when things get a little tough or someone says something that is hurtful.  Are these the same kids that all got a trophy for playing ball,  no one loses, everyone plays, you are all special.........?

Mangino raised the KU football program from the ashes and took them into the national spotlight.  Now, they will return back to the Big 12 cellar.   Good luck Mangino,  I am sure you'll be on a team as a coordinator or at least get casted in the new Austin Powers movie coming out.....  Get in my Belly!!!!!!!!!!!

That super obese slug was one of the best things to ever happen to Kansas football.  If he doesn't die of a heart attack by the time he gets another job, the guy would be a good choice for most any D1 program.  It is nauseating the amount of crybabies who think it is abuse for a football coach to act like a marine sargeant.  So what?  Transfer if you can't handle it!  Yeah, yeah, I saw the picture of the guy's hand who was ordered to crawl on a hot surface.  Is that the worse case of abuse anyone has ever seen?  I think not.

Dodd, your story is a bunch of bologna. Mangina made a team that used to be the laughing stock in the NCAA, to a force to reckon with.
