This just moved at the Kansas City Star website. Houston Nutt and Kansas apparently have interest in each other.

There's a couple of reasons why this is happening. Nutt and Kansas basketball coach Bill Self are old friends. They became close when both were athletes at Oklahoma State. Self played basketball. Nutt was a backup quarterback at Okie State, then was a graduate assistant under Jimmy Johnson.

The other aspect to consider: This could just as well be a plant by Nutt's agent Jimmy Sexton. The super agent isn't above trying to plant stories to get his guys raises. Sexton has half the SEC has clients so in that sense all you have to do is follow the money.

Ole Miss is in back-to-back Cotton Bowls. Nutt is extremely popular in Oxford and has been successful. Unless there is some rift with AD Pete Boone then the most sensible reasons Nutt is interested in KU is one of the reasons above.

Houston Nutt to Kansas?

Take a look at the facilities at Texas A&M they are great.....how's that working out for them? 6-6! Just because you have the facilites it does not mean that your going to be able to out recruit powers like Texas, Okla etc.....If your a big time high school football player are you gonna go to Texas or Okla or Kansas? Lots and lots of schools have really good facilites but to act like that is going to make you a top 15 program at what is a basketball school is delusional! Nutt would be trading one mid level BCS job for another one.

hahaha, you said "since when did KU become a football power?"  HAHAHAHA!  since when did ole miss become a football power? I wouldn't complain too much about taking a job at miss state.  the seem to be moving in a better direction than ole miss right now after ole miss's clunker of a season.  the writing might be on the wall for nutt.......get completely out-played by new coach at miss state, now they are getting out-recruited by the same coach.......maybe its a good time to get out of town.

Ole Miss is not a power either. Once Ed's players are gone, they'll aspire for the football greatness of Northern Illinois.

What did Nutt do this year to deserve a raise.  He started the season in the Top 10 and fell flat on his face and ended up with a 4 loss team that basically beat nobody this year except LSU because of piss poor clock management.  He would be smart to move on to Kansas at this point because of the lower expectations which he can definitely live up to!

Nutt would be out of his mind to leave Ole Miss
It would be a huge step down as KU is a basketball school and Ole Miss is a football school
He will never have the talent level he now has at his disposal, which he needs to be successful and
it will be too difficult to pull talent from the South to Kansas.
Nutt would be a nut to leave the SEC

Houston Nutt to Kansas?

mraggie2,

I'm sure that Lawrence is a lovely place and it sounds like you are a proud supporter...good on ya.  However, I just want to clarify and correct some things you said in your post.  First, I looked at three different polls of the "best college towns in America" and Lawrence didn't make any of those Top 20 polls, ironically Oxford MS did!  So, while Lawrence may be a great college town in your opinion, and it may be, its not in the top 20 in America.  Secondly, while I didn't do extensive research into the football budgets, I did look into overall donations, renovations being done, and football dept general budgets and KU may be third behind OU and UT in the football budget, they are also behind OSU in terms of overall money being thrown at the program.  T Boone Pickens recently gave over $200 million to renovate OSU's football facilities and KU can't touch that number.  For that matter, neither can OU and UT.  Finally, you stated that the Big 12 is the second most important football conference in the Nation, and I might even give you the nod on that for the last two years, but over time, I would have to say you are in the third most important conference behind the SEC, and the Big 10.  Again, with the Big Ten's Michigan and Michigan State being down the last two years, I'll give you the nod for the most recent time period.

With all that said, you're in the same boat as my Louisville Cards.  You have had some recent success, won a BCS bowl, finished with a top 10 national ranking, but you're still a basketball school first and football second.  Because of that, it would be nothing short of a coup to get an SEC coach to come to Lawrence, but it can be done.  Watch tomorrow's paper because we are about to do that very thing by getting Charlie Strong to come to UL.....at least that's what we're hoping for.  Good luck with the search.

Timing Just Right

Recently following the Big 12 North in anticipation of a possible Cotton Bowl match-up between Arkansas and one of the division's teams, I have more of a 'feel' for the Mangino situation and others.  The opportunity to develop a program at this time and in such an atmosphere seems irresistible.

For reasons given already in this post's comments, I believe Nutt's interest is genuine - and not just a ploy for any kind of raise.  Additionally, Nutt has found himself in a rather volatile situation at Ole Miss with recent social issues this season that would hinder recruiting for the near future.  Already a magnet for soap opera theatrics, he would certainly be conccerned with any others beyond his control.

So, a lateral move to Kansas at a time, when his 'stock' is highest, seems right.  You can bet on it.

This has to be a ploy for a pay raise.  No way does Nutt step out of the SEC to take a chance at KU.  Granted the Egg Bowl didn't help matters much but with Snead coming back (he better anyways, since all that preseason hype was just that), Nutt is sitting good.
Was KU's image really damaged beyond repair with the former coach?  Good on him for trying to run a tight program.  I don't recall hearing any off field issues or problems.  KU QB and top WR are out, which doesn't fit the past set up when Nutt walked in.

I've said for years that Nutt is a NUT, but I wouldn't blame him for taking the first pick-up truck out of Mississippi.
Besides I think Arkansas will become the second best team in the SEC-W next to Bama and he couldn't handle that.
