Houston Nutt to Kansas?

This just moved at the Kansas City Star website. Houston Nutt and Kansas apparently have interest in each other.

There's a couple of reasons why this is happening. Nutt and Kansas basketball coach Bill Self are old friends. They became close when both were athletes at Oklahoma State. Self played basketball. Nutt was a backup quarterback at Okie State, then was a graduate assistant under Jimmy Johnson.

The other aspect to consider: This could just as well be a plant by Nutt's agent Jimmy Sexton. The super agent isn't above trying to plant stories to get his guys raises. Sexton has half the SEC has clients so in that sense all you have to do is follow the money.

Ole Miss is in back-to-back Cotton Bowls. Nutt is extremely popular in Oxford and has been successful. Unless there is some rift with AD Pete Boone then the most sensible reasons Nutt is interested in KU is one of the reasons above.

Houston Nutt to Kansas?

I was just thinking the same thing. He did a great job at Arkansas with danny fords recruits had a couple off years then got lucky in landing McFadden and Felix Jones. Had he been able to recruit a better QB we might not be saying this about him but Snead and McCluster ( ? Name) will be gone next year if I remember right could be wrong on the RB. There is some high expectations out of Ole Miss and Im sure KU would be a little less pressure to win now. He would have more time to recruit his type of players so that might look attractive to him. He did use the Nebraska job to get a raise at Arkansas so it might be another thing like that aswell. Nutt isnt a bad coach but I dont see him winning big at ole miss in the next few years and depending on recruits maybe longer and I dont think that Mississippi will wait a couple years to see if he dosent show progression in the next couple of seasons they might start looking for someone else.

Houston Nutt to Kansas?

This wouldn't be the first time Houston has used an open job to get more money from his current employer. However, it might be time for Houston to leave Oxford while the gettin's good. 8-4's great for a couple of years when you've been 5-7, but then you start wanting more, and Houston can't get you the big win you need in the SEC to get that BCS bowl bid.

At Kansas, they may be satisfied with being 8-4 or 7-5 and going to the Alamo Bowl or Sun Bowl or wherever it is the 3rd place finisher in the Big 12 gets. He will beat Texas though, so UT boosters  might want to send some checks down to Ole Miss to keep him there.

Houston Nutt to Kansas?

Well your right, Ole Miss is definitely a better football school than Kansas and Kansas is definitely a basketball school over a football school. But i can see a few reasons why Mr. Nutt would choose to leave Ole Miss for Kansas.  For one there isn't near as much pressure to coach at Kansas than Ole Miss. You mentioned that Nutt couldnt out recruit Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Okla. St.  and etc. Well it just so happens all those teams you mentioned are in the Big 12 South and Kansas is in the North.  Kansas has the chance to compete for the Big 12 North every year. Houston probably thought he couldn't win the SEC West with Alabama, LSU and Auburn being good year in and year out let alone the whole SEC.  This was his best year to do that with a preseason ranking of #4 and he went 8-4 overall and 4-4 in the conference. If Kansas plays up to their potential they have a CHANCE to win the Big 12 North every year.  They definitely underacheived this year but before the season they were picked to battle Nebraska for the North.  Nebraska with Pelini is gonna contend for the North every year and with Snyder at K-State who knows how their going to be in the future. Colorado could be a good program but I dont think they are going to do anything with Hawkins as head coach. Missouri has a chance to win the north every year as well but they are down like Kansas is right now losing great players to the NFL and graduation.  Iowa State improved alot this year going to a bowl game but I don't think there capable of winning the North every year. Kansas with Nutt has a great chance to win the North and can recruit just as good as any North team there is. Nutt has done a great job at Murray St., Arkansas, and Ole Miss but I don't think he is going to win a SEC title.  He played at Oklahoma State and is very familiar with the Big 12.  If he came to Kansas he could battle for the North every year and have the chance to pull an upset over a South team in the Championship just like Nebraska almost did this year and Kansas State did over Oklahoma in 2003. Kansas has improved thier facilites alot having some of the best in the Nation and can recruit out of Texas very well.  Not to mention Mark Mangino was payed $2.3 Million making him the 16th highest paid coach in college football. Houston Nutt is paid $2.5 million which isn't much of a difference and I am sure Perkins wouldn't mind paying the difference to attract Nutt to Kansas.  Ole Miss is definitely the better football program but I could see why Nutt would choose to come to Kansas!

Houston Nutt to Kansas?

I think its very humorous to read people's comments that consist of "Why would anyone come to be the coach at Kansas?" Clearly, these people don't know much about KU or the town of Lawrence.  KU football is just a powerhouse waiting to explode.  They now have the 3rd biggest budget in the Big 12, behind the two giants OU and UT.  KU basketball is what got it started, but its raking in money to the entire athletic program left and right. KU is also in the Big 12 North, a division that would be easy to dominate and doesn't have any heavy hitters at the moment; the potential is much more abounding than it is in the SEC.  Also, Lawrence is by far the 2nd best college town in the Big 12 (behind Boulder) and probably top 10 in the country (and Austin is a city, not a college town).  Not to mention, its a great place to live if you're older with a family, like most college head coaches.
Sooo, why would someone come and coach KU football? Its in the Big 12 (the 2nd most important conference), it pays exceptionally well, the town of Lawrence is a great place to live, there's the potential to take over the Big12 North, KU basketball keeps KU on the national collegiate sports radar every year (which affects KU football in some manner), the facilities are 2nd to none, etc. Unfortunately, college sports has become all about how much money a program can generate to spend on getting the best coaches and the best facilities.  Lew Perkins knows this and is creating quite a sports metropolis in the little town of Lawrence.  KU fans won't be groveling over the unfair firing of Mangino when they're a consistent top 15 contender in the coming future.

Houston Nutt to Kansas?

This would be a good move for him.
Orgeron's players are gone after this year.  They were ranked #4 at one time and are now unranked and coming off a loss to Mississippi State.... Way underachieved.  He will have a bad years in 2010 and 2011 and his stock will fall fast.  Best for him to leave while he can - while moving into a weaker conference / division at the same time.

Houston Nutt to Kansas?

I may be wrong, but from the outside looking in, it appears Nutt is looking for a raise.
AND...I'll bet he gets it.

I agree.  It doesn't make a lot of sense for Nutt to leave the Ole Miss and powerhouse SEC,  but what Kansas does have is brand new state of the art facilities that rival those @ Texas,  Oklahoma and Nebraska.   They also have shown they are willing to pay big money to their coaches.  I believe before Mangino's buyout "resignation",  he was the third highest paid coach in the Big 12.  Somewhere around 2.5 million.  I don't know what Nutt is being paid @ Ole Miss but money definitely creates interest.

Houston Nutt to Kansas?

OK check me if I'm wrong here but Kansas? Really? Why would you go from Ole Miss to Kansas? Since when did KU become a football power? Did I miss something here? Maybe fall asllep for a couple of decades or so? Kansas is a basketball school with the only football success generated by the guy they just ran out of town. How is Nutt gonna out recruit Texas, Texas A&M, Okla, Okla St....etc.....etc.....
Kansas.....really? That's like taking a job at Indiana or Miss State.
