Another side to the Leach/Texas Tech story

Shame on Craig James.

Shame on ESPN.

Shame on Texas Tech.

If what Mike Leach said was true in the New York Times on Friday, then what we all thought two days ago is a mirage. Leach and other sources claim that the coach did not, in fact, mistreat Adam James. Leach said only that he did not know where the player was taken and that he ordered only that James be taken "out of the light."  Leach is supported by head trainer Steve Pincock and a team doctor.

Leach hasn’t spoken this candidly because he was busy suing the school. But now that it has fired him, the gloves are off. Most telling is the accusation by Leach that James leveraged his position as an ESPN analyst to get more playing time for his son. Through a spokesman, James said the accusations were "absurd."

I received two calls this week from people I trust saying James had bothered coaches and that he had tried to leverage his influence at the network to get his son playing time. Big Daddy James had become a royal pain in the you-know-what. None of that should dismiss the assertion that Leach allegedly mistreated James' son. But if a court ultimately rules in favor of Leach in what is sure to be an unlawful termination suit brought by Leach, James' job could be in danger.

I thought from the beginning it was borderline unethical that friends and co-workers of James were reporting this story. It had that "railroad" smell to it from the beginning with James being portrayed as the protective parent.

There is definitely another side to this, a side that ESPN hasn’t reported until after the Times ran its story.  An ESPN employee said that it did report the e-mails written by assistant coach Lincoln Riley as well as a memo written by Texas Tech doctor Michael Phy before the Times story. Just throwing this out there but where was the Worldwide Leader’s info coming from – James, his son, maybe both? That’s OK if Craig James worked for Fox. It’s not OK if he drives a story in his favor with his employer.

With Leach firing back, Texas Tech better check its bank account and ESPN should consider firing their guy. First, he is now as radioactive as Leach in his own profession.  The rumor that James is considering a Senate run might have to be addressed. Free publicity, it would seem, for a future politician?

Also, what coach will want to talk to James in the future? Even if his son was mistreated by Leach, the allegation that has been badgering the Texas Tech staff will not go over well in the coaching profession.

As is usually the case, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle but let's look at this a different way. The fact that Leach would not "apologize" to the James family didn’t make sense from the beginning. If Adam’s treatment was so heinous, why would a simple apology make Big Daddy go away?

There are three sides of this story: Texas Tech's, Leach's and James'. I don’t know quite who to believe but I do know who has lost. The Phony Express, Big Daddy James.

Another side to the Leach/Texas Tech story

There are many people out there telling Tech fans to grow up and accept that Leach is gone.  I don't see Tech and Leach kissing and making up, but telling Tech fans to get over it is like telling you to get over loosing something that is important to you, even if if is as simple as your childhood baseball card collection.  Many express that Leach is a loser, never accomplished anything and has a lot of faults.

So sad when a man cannot recognize the good in another. I think that is one sign of immaturity

Leach had a winning season every year during his tenure at Tech. Wishbone formation creator Emory Bellard has stated that Leach does the best job of any offensive coordinator in the nation. Ten years, ten bowl games. He brought Tech football player graduation rate up to number one in the country.

Urban Meyer is giving it up due to exhaustion. Being a head coach is a demanding job. I have read that Leach spent more hours working than anyone else in the Tech athletic department. He has also accomplished great deal in his life and positively affected the lives of many people. Do you have a comparable record?

Leach believed in the pirate culture that eveyone was equal and important, every team member had a job to do. Everyone contributed. There is so much evidence out there that Adam James never bought into that. It will be interesting to see what James is doing 10 years from now. I really hope he comes to understand that living an honest, productive life, bringing joy and happiness to others will make his dad more proud than his being a football star.

Leach may not have a lot of charm and charisma, and you may criticize his defending himself, but how do you feel when you are acused of doing something like trying to cause harm to someone else, and you honestly feel things have been misrepresented? If this were you, would you just quietly go away? I believe that if he brings a law suit against Tech, it will be more about his reputation than about money. And I’d bet the cost of season football tickets that if this were a Hollywood star with charm and charisma, you would overlook any of his transgressions. Case in point…Charlie Sheen was arrested and accused by his wife of threatening her life with a knife on Christmas Day. But today Sheen is back in Hollywood on the set of 2 1/2 men and his fans will tune in to watch and let it go. And his wife wants him back!

Double -edged-sword:

**  If when Taylor Potts had his concussion, was given the "shed" treatment, then fine....This is where Leach went wrong, DESPITE the rich whinny ESPN dad.  No NCAA player of any sport deserves or should be "locked" "confined" in any type of room.

**  Gerald Myers is the one who should be fired.  Bad Blood there from the contract re-newal and prior.

**  Bad business decision by TTU, Leach was $$$ in the bank, building the program and getting to the tier One level.

Like you said 3 sides to this story and ALL are bad...

Dodd, you have traditionally been one of Leach's biggest critics.  But thank you for this article.

Another side to the Leach/Texas Tech story

.

This is in response to MrJama up thread:

As the plot thickens what with all the additional BS from the TTU administration and the James water-carriers at ESPN...

The following is from the team trainer Pincock’s “sworn” affadavit:

  • 9. On December 19, 2009, we had practice at the stadium field. James came to practice but was still not allowed to participate due to his injury. He was dressed in appropriate attire. Leach again asked me to place James in the same shed he was in during the last practice. I was standing in the Stadium next to Leach and Zane Perry. Perry mentioned using the media interview room. I located James and Jordan and walked to that room. I noticed an electrical closet in the room, and walked inside. I commented on the noise in the room, and told him not to go in that room. All chairs and items that might be used for sitting were removed from the room, with the exception of two large tractor tires, and the student trainer was placed outside the room to check on James and to ensure James was following instructions.

ion/pincock3.pdf

Now … Go and view the ESPN video from Adam James' cell phone at YouTube:

youtube.com/watch?v=DW3vtkyHtU0

The following 3 items are glaringly noticeable.

  • First: Apparently, against the instructions of the trainer, James turned the lights on for his cell phone video.
  • Second: Against the instructions of the trainer, James went into the electrical room of the media facility.
  • Third: At the 9 second mark one can see clearly in the background two red chairs sitting against the rear wall.

Now go back up and re-read Pincock’s statement.

Also: Go and watch the following video further depicting the, as ESPN first reported reported, a "shed" and/or "electrical closet" that Adam James was placed in.

This whole line of crap just isn’t holding up even under the slightest of scrutiny.

What a circus . . .

He flipflopped - perhaps looking at the previous, initial statement would make you question one that was released much later by the administration.

Sorry to be getting in on this late, byt why would the James family want their son at SMU?.....Big Daddy James torpedoed their football program already with the famous SMU-Death Sentence!!!   Between he and Eric Dickerson, they are just now climbing out of the cave!!

Dodd agreeing with you on any subject usually goes against my pride but this is one that I will have to bite my pride and say well done.  This story that ESPN keeps trying to edit to go Craig James way irritates me in so many ways.

And to anyone using Pincock's story to demean leach needs to read the afadavit again.  He clearly states that he was not told to lock anyone up and all he was told was to take him to a dark room.

If Steve Pincock thought what he was doing to James was wrong, why didn't he give the kid a chair to sit on in those rooms, instead of followoing orders but telling James that he didn't agree with them.

DOn't know about Leach, but Pinchock certainly seems to deserve to be fired, too. "Just followed orders" eh?

Another side to the Leach/Texas Tech story

I don't even know the James kid but just look at him on the field at the Alamo Bowl...looks like a punk doper kid to me, my husband,  and my young adult kids.  I am not saying he uses drugs, but he sure gives the appearance of one who does.  And people are judged by their appearance every day for those of you who want to tell me how terrible that is.  If he came to our home with one of my kids and I knew nothing more about him other than his appearance on the football field tonight, we'd have a very long talk and I would encourage my kids to find someone else to hang out with.  That doesn't mean I think Leach should have placed him in the equipment shed, but I can imagine James was plently of trouble and not into being a true athelete.  But the worst decision Leach made was not kicking him off the team a long time ago.  And if Mike Leach wants to say whatever he wants to on ESPN...why not?  Texas Tech officials did a very poor job of announcing his suspension and firing...no press conference or explanation to thousands of fans getting ready to travel to a bowl game.  Tech should be very well experienced in handling controversy and they have been extremely lousy at it.
