Another side to the Leach/Texas Tech story

Shame on Craig James.

Shame on ESPN.

Shame on Texas Tech.

If what Mike Leach said was true in the New York Times on Friday, then what we all thought two days ago is a mirage. Leach and other sources claim that the coach did not, in fact, mistreat Adam James. Leach said only that he did not know where the player was taken and that he ordered only that James be taken "out of the light."  Leach is supported by head trainer Steve Pincock and a team doctor.

Leach hasn’t spoken this candidly because he was busy suing the school. But now that it has fired him, the gloves are off. Most telling is the accusation by Leach that James leveraged his position as an ESPN analyst to get more playing time for his son. Through a spokesman, James said the accusations were "absurd."

I received two calls this week from people I trust saying James had bothered coaches and that he had tried to leverage his influence at the network to get his son playing time. Big Daddy James had become a royal pain in the you-know-what. None of that should dismiss the assertion that Leach allegedly mistreated James' son. But if a court ultimately rules in favor of Leach in what is sure to be an unlawful termination suit brought by Leach, James' job could be in danger.

I thought from the beginning it was borderline unethical that friends and co-workers of James were reporting this story. It had that "railroad" smell to it from the beginning with James being portrayed as the protective parent.

There is definitely another side to this, a side that ESPN hasn’t reported until after the Times ran its story.  An ESPN employee said that it did report the e-mails written by assistant coach Lincoln Riley as well as a memo written by Texas Tech doctor Michael Phy before the Times story. Just throwing this out there but where was the Worldwide Leader’s info coming from – James, his son, maybe both? That’s OK if Craig James worked for Fox. It’s not OK if he drives a story in his favor with his employer.

With Leach firing back, Texas Tech better check its bank account and ESPN should consider firing their guy. First, he is now as radioactive as Leach in his own profession.  The rumor that James is considering a Senate run might have to be addressed. Free publicity, it would seem, for a future politician?

Also, what coach will want to talk to James in the future? Even if his son was mistreated by Leach, the allegation that has been badgering the Texas Tech staff will not go over well in the coaching profession.

As is usually the case, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle but let's look at this a different way. The fact that Leach would not "apologize" to the James family didn’t make sense from the beginning. If Adam’s treatment was so heinous, why would a simple apology make Big Daddy go away?

There are three sides of this story: Texas Tech's, Leach's and James'. I don’t know quite who to believe but I do know who has lost. The Phony Express, Big Daddy James.

Another side to the Leach/Texas Tech story

I agree wholeheartedly.  Let's all compose ourselves, get all our facts straight, and write to all these people and then stick to our guns.  Lubbock will suffer if fans and alumni groups keep their money out of the city - when Lubbock City officials see this is not a fly-by-night fit of our own, they will use their power to nudge Tech leadership in the right direction - and for some, that is OUT!

We have friends who are enjoying their vacation in San Antonio, but the seats they paid for at the Alamo Bowl will remain empty in a sign of protest.  We will still cheer for the young men who have had the courage and focus to practice and prepare for the game, but we will make note of the advertisors, and the first time James is played... the television will be turned off.

Another entity to contact is AT&T; what is their position in all of this?

Another side to the Leach/Texas Tech story

This smelled from the get go. I know the environment from which the James kid came.  He EXPECTS and has all his life been given the benefit of the doubt.  He expects that he is entitled to playing time, etc. That is his birthright.

It is appalling that when he reached the real world, he found himself being treated differently.  Welocme to the pool, come on in the waters fine.

What major school would be so stupid as to derail the recruiting effort days before commitmment and enrage the whale donors which results in recalling pledges of cash for the program.

And most importantly, why has so little been made of the fact that Daddy James was part and parcel to SMU getting the death penalty. He was quoted as saying that it happened in his senior year; maybe, but he was the benificiary of the largess for four years.

Is this what he is trying to do for Tech? I dealt with Little League Dad's for 25 years and Daddy is the poster child.

No, I am not from the Raiser nation.  I am a Texas Longhorn, clas of 67. Tech has be good for the conference and Leach was good for the program.  But I ask, why dismantle a program that was headed in the right direction

Craig James was part of the SMU Death Penalty

James was at SMU when the NCAA killed the football program for cheating.  He also screwed Eric Dickerson out of the Heisman Trophy by taking carries away from him.
Leach has to be kicking himself for giving Adam James a scholarship.  Several Tech coaches advised him not to because he didn't have the talent to contribute.  Daddy James got involved and made it happen.

Another side to the Leach/Texas Tech story

AWESOME, Dennis just simply AWESOME.

ESPN and the writers who have written such irresponsible articles in order to show their loyalty to their friend Craig James is sickening.
These so called journalists from Jay "the fat little midget troll" Mariotti to Christine Brennan and Colin Cowherd have done more to damage not only their own credibility but more importantly the company they ALL work for, ESPN, than I think they could have even imagined.

ESPN has become an out of control supposed sports news organization and hopefully this will cause the implosion of that little kingdom over in Bristol. I think it would behoove 'the mukity mucks" at ESPN or ABC to take a long look at what is rapidly becoming the TMZ of the sports world and make some drastic changes. Craig James does in fact need to fired. And if he really was considering a run for the Texas Senate he may want to rethink that idea. He has no one to blame but himself for raising a self centered, lazy, finger pointing little entitled brat and his very own attempt to meddle, pursuade and or bully the coaches at TT for his imminent fall from his current position as talking head.

Congrats to Dennis Dodd for having the huevos to point out what every one with half a brain was screaming from their couches. If you really look at it Mike Leach was fired not only because of the egomaniacal decison makers at TT but also the exact same types at ESPN who felt they could "create" and influence the story to benefit one of their own.

Its really very sad. Man ego is just a career killer isnt it Craig.

Another side to the Leach/Texas Tech story

Here Criag James goes ruining another football team.  Don't forget that he was at SMU when they were given the death penalty and lastly, he screwed Eric Dickerson out of the Heisman Trophy by taking carries away from him.

All of us? I didn't jump to conclusions, Dodd. Maybe you did, but I didn't jump then and I'm not jumping now. Did we learn nothing from the Duke lacrosse case? Never make a decision one way or another until all the facts come out.

Another side to the Leach/Texas Tech story

Too bad Dodd already wrote a scathing piece on what a piece of trash Leach is.  Too bad no one can keep their damn mouth shut and let investigating officials find out silly things like "facts"  before Dodd and others try to hang everyone they can out to dry in the name of journalism/sensationalism.  I don't know what the facts of this case are past this: journali...(ahem) "bloggers" write whatever they want and major news affiliations should fire Dodd and whoever writes slander.  Or at least take the title "writer" out of all lines appearing anywhere near their names.

Another side to the Leach/Texas Tech story

The ESPN "interview" with Craig James was a joke. Rece Davis is a PUTZ. Does anyone recall any hard ball questions asked by Davis? Obviously, what was going on was an ESPN "SPINZONE" racing into action to portray James as an innocent victim as a way to get out in front of Leach's firing.
How will you ever believe anything coming form ESPN or Graig James ever again? They should change their name to TMZ
I can guarantee you that James, ESPN and TT have totally underestimated Leach who by now has all the evidence he needs with the James voice mails, e-mails, and testimony from several sources that substantiate his side of things.
I just wish I was his attorney I would own that university and the Craig James family!!

Another side to the Leach/Texas Tech story

But the TT Provost went on ESPN and said that Leach admitted to everything including (hilariously) giving James a good cussing!

The whole thing is fishy.

Another side to the Leach/Texas Tech story

I agree with this e-mailer, he seems to hit the mark on all ares. I would just add that it is a shame that Mike Leach is now going to
use his energy in defending himself on this this junk and can't get back to just coaching and producing a winning program.
I hope a big time university will offer this coach a chance to bring a winning attitude to a program that is on the slide.
This is what is fair for a coach that will find it hard to defend his actions without a microphone as ESPN has.

Someone needs to offer this man equal footing.
