Tennessee down to Cutcliffe?

Tennessee has seemingly moved on to Duke head coach David Cutcliffe as its favorite.

The Vols' former offensive coordinator (on two ocassions) could be the fallback candidate now that Will Muschamp and Troy Calhoun have dropped out of the running. Cutcliffe is 9-15 in two seasons at Duke. Five years ago he underwent triple bypass surgery. He has rebounded nicely making modest improvement at Duke.

Cutcliffe is 53-44 overall including a successful six-year stay at Ole Miss where he was 44-29. The Rebels tied for the SEC West title in 2003. From 1983-1992 Cutcliffe was a Tennessee assistant. From 1993-1998 he was Phil Fulmer's offensive coordinator before departing for Ole Miss.

Tennessee assistant Kippy Brown is still in the running along with a new name -- Louisiana Tech's Derek Dooley. The son of Vince Dooley is 17-20 in three seasons in Ruston, La. He coached under Nick Saban at both LSU and the Dolphins.

Tennessee down to Cutcliffe?

I like cutcliffe and I know he is really close with Manning's and Fulmer but I don't think he is the right guy for this job. I really wish that they would call Chris Peterson from Boise and throw some money at him. The guy is a awesome coach and put that team on the map. I just can imagine what he can at a school like Tennessee. The guy has to be tired of never getting a chance to play for the national championship and he would get that chance at UT. Come on Hamilton save your job go after after Peterson

Tennessee down to Cutcliffe?

Everytime this dude is at the University of Tennessee, the football team kicks ass. He coached some of the best players to ever play for the Vols. Great hire, if this is real. He has so many connections, recruiting and otherwiise, to East Tennessee and the South. Why would you want to look more desperate? A "smoke screen"?

Take Tommy Tuberville, please. It's a stepping stone for him anyway, let it be a one week stint.

Tennessee down to Cutcliffe?

Like it or not, the reality is that Cutcliffe is probably the best coach we're going to be able to get. A lot of people are saying that Hamilton is doing a bad job and should be able to get a better coach. The problem is not Hamilton, it's the timing. The big name coaches (head and assistant) that were thinking about moving have already moved or decided to stay where they are. With signing day so close, few coaches want to leave and start over with so little time to recruit. Additionally, the new coach has to put a staff together, which nobody likes to in a hurry. Finally, seeing the Kiffin fallout plastered all over the media, coaches don't want to go through thatt. As for Cutcliffe, is he my first choice? No, but considering the circumstances, we would be lucky to get him. For those who say we can do better, who do you think we can get? Before you start spouting off names, think about it. WHO ARE YOU REALLY GOING TO GET TO LEAVE THEIR CURRENT JOB NOW? The answer, almost nobody. It has nothing to do with Tennessee or the AD. The window for getting new coaches is small, and has passed. If you want a big name, then hire Kippy Brown as the interim HC for 2010 and start the search over after the season ends. Otherwise, we're going to have compromise and make the best of a bad situation.

Tennessee down to Cutcliffe?

This is the University of Tennessee, coaches should be knocking down our door to be the coach.Really? You really think anyone outside of Knoxville thinks anything of Tennessee? It is a terrible campus with a football program that has deteriorated over the past decade. Tell me why anyone would honestly be "knocking down" UT's doors?
