(With expansion news changing by the nanosecond, I thought it would be a good idea to introduce a new feature to Dodds and Ends. Welcome to The Expand-o-meter, a daily summary of expansion-related stuff. Think of it as the blog equivalent to a pair of Sansabelt slacks. It expands and contracts according to the size of the bloated belly of college football. The E-O-M will last as long as expansion does or until vacation, whichever comes first.)

Days college athletics has been held hostage (since Big Ten announced expansion exploration on Dec. 15): 174

Who is having the best day: Mountain West which might reap a windfall if it gets leftover Big 12 teams. The MWC was meeting Monday and was expected to invite Boise State to bolster its BCS chances. According to reports, Boise will have to wait as the Mountain West waits to see how the national landscape shakes out.

Who is having the worst day: Big Ten. Rapid Pac-10 expansion is forcing Jim Delany's hand. JD is desperately trying to force the Irish into his league with Texas now out of play. For a brief moment there, it almost looked like the big guy almost lost his leverage.

Quote of the day: "No wonder Baylor is fighting so hard not to get left behind by Texas,  Texas Tech and Texas A&M, they think this is the rapture." --a tweet from @Pac16Conference

Link of the day: End of the Big 12? Blame commissioner Dan Beebe for not pushing a playoff.

What's on tap: Watch for formal invitations this week to Big 12 schools from Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott.

Why would you get ride of SDSU and Keep New Mexico. SDSU is slowly and I do mean very slowly getting on the right track in football, and are one of the top teams in the conf in both mens and women's basketball. Throw in the San Diego market recruiting ground and they are good for the conf even as a doormat. What does New Mexico bring, I think the only news from them was the loosing and an abusive coach.

Mburns: You are missing the point about academics.  Research grants are measured in the 100s of millions, not 15 or 20 million from football.  To bring a "weak link" into the Big-10 could ultimately cost much more than the increased TV coverage from another market.  Which, BTW, Nebraska does not really have.  Missouri can at least offer up St Louis and KC.  The Big-10 would be better off taking Rutgers, for the academic standing AND the NY/NJ market it would bring in.

If the expansion between the Big 10 and Pac 10 happens, and if that leaves Kansas, Kansas State, and Baylor out, then look for Boise State, TCU, Utah, BYU, Kansas State, Kansas, Baylor and maybe a couple of the top athletic programs from the MAC or C-USA to join forces to create a pretty decent conference for football.  But basketball-wise, Kansas is screwed big time.

What does the PAC 10 really have to offer??

The Big 10 has a lot of TV $$$ to throw around and tradition and a massive chunk of the nation that loves college sports. What does the PAC 10 have? They have the LA market, but does anyone really care in LA at all?

I don't have any numbers to base this opinion on, but I don't see how it's a lock that Texas and OU will accept the offer from the PAC 10. Maybe the PAC 10 will become a big deal after they join. They both have a sweet deal going in the Big 12. Missouri and Nebraska are getting hosed right now. Right now it's obvious that all this nonsense depends on Notre Dame and Nebraska making a big move.

I'm opposed to any reconfiguration or expansion by any major conference, because "too big to fail" has an atrocious track record, and I'd hate to see my favorite sport destroyed by greed.  But if it must be, here's my MWC wishlist:

If the Texas legislature forces the PAC 10's hand and they end up with Baylor instead of Colorado, I'd like to see both Kansas schools and Colorado end up with the MWC.  Believe me, you could do worse.  I'd also like to see the MWC get rid of San Diego St and ad BSU for conference strength purposes.  If the MWC could manage this scenario, it would be BCS-worthy.

MWC East
TCU
Kansas
Kansas St
Colorado
Colorado St
Wyoming

MWC West
BYU
Utah
Boise St
Air Force
New Mexico
UNLV

EXPANSION?? Are you kidding me. you get rid of the big 12 you get rid of one bcs conference you add CU, Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, OU, and Oklahoma state to pac-10 no that will not work if the pac-10 wants to expand you need to look at hawaii. Hawaii does not fit in the wac they travel the most out of any school in the USA. look at them they have to travel to boise, idaho. lafayette, louisiana and a bunch of parts in the south and the cold uper north in idaho so goin to california and oregon would do them better as for the big 10 the only teams that would fit and want to go would be rutgers and notre dame.  ya the baylor ad is complaining about all this expansion stuff but the big 10 and pac- 10 are tryin to take away the big 12. and add to the big 10 and pac-10 why doesn't the big 12 add boise state if texas leaves that would a another team it will give them a chance for a BCS bowl every year. And if all those schools go to the PAC-10 i guess BOISE, K-State, KU, Baylor, Iowa State, TCU, Colorado State, Air Force, Wyoming, New Mexico, UNLV, Utah and San Diego State would make up the new version of the Big 12/Mountain West Conference which would replace the Big 12 a a BCS Bowl. GO K-STATE!! KEEP THE BIG 12 AS IT IS OR ITS GOING TO BE A MESS FOR YEARS!! Any Comments e-mail me at .

AS a 40 year college fan the whole thing sucks.. As days go by it the complications grow. I believe the big ten is on a 18 month plan to lock it down...2 things I see happening...The Pac 10 will make the first move with Colorado and another unknown..  2) the SEC is holding the cards and expansion isn't do or die for them
