Nebraska trounces Texas, moves to Big Ten

LINCOLN, Neb. -- It was the worst beating Texas has taken in public in at least seven years.

That 65-13 loss to Oklahoma in 2003 was only a football game. Nebraska officials spent the better part of 40 minutes Friday putting Bevo in his place.

Nebraska didn't just leave the Big 12 for the Big Ten on Friday, it told the world why: That bully Texas. In the space of eight days, Nebraska transformed from happy member of the Big 12 to angry, rancorous new member of the Big Ten.

Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman and AD Tom Osborne both took turns hammering Texas during a comment period before the board of regents. When they got done, there was only one possible result. The regents' vote was unanimous. Nebraska is headed to the Big Ten. Unspoken: Because Texas forced it out.

The moment the news broke last week about the Pac-10's desire to take Texas and five Big 12 partners, Nebraska turned sour. Perlman, at one point, stared across a table during the Big 12 meetings at his Texas counterpart Bill Powers and asked him if he was willing to give up his media rights. In other words, start a Big 12 Network. Powers said no. At that point, Perlman knew it was over.

This league had a chance to survive seven years ago but a possible network was voted down, obviously not supported by Texas. Now, it's clear the Pac-10 is going to get Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma.

Super conferences, start your engines.

The money quote from Osborne: "One school leaving a conference does not break up a conference. Two schools leaving a conference does not break up a conference. Six schools leaving a conference, breaks up a conference. We have not had a hidden agenda, we have not dealt with more than one conference."

T.O. intimated that Texas has been talking to the SEC, Big Ten and Pac-10.

It was a bad day for Texas' reputation. It was a good day for Nebraska's future.

Yeah, they didn't get an extra 10 million a year in television revenue because of UT. That is plenty of reason to leave and they are going to a conference that will bring in more research grants. The Big 12 was ran like a typical Texan. Please just start your own country!

Nebraska trounces Texas, moves to Big Ten

Wow, Texas doesn't rule the Big 12 and Beebe? Get your head out of the clouds. The last few days was the icing on the cake with all the headlines "Texas and Texas A&M are trying to save the Big 12. They won't even all a Big 12 network. Why wouldn't anyone go to a conference the will bring more research grants and an extra 10 million a year in football revenue? The Big 12 could have been saved if UT would allow a democratic conference like the Big 10, but we are talking Texas and their massive egos so of course they balk at democracy.

Hmmmm dumb ass eh?!?!? I watch about 120 college football games a year, followed by another 40 high school games including the Texas state championships.

I’m fairly intelligent and pretty knowledgably as a rule besides more than just football. So I say with the utmost respect intended, you sir have branded yourself as a fool. Only a fool would call someone they don’t know an idiot, when they have no clue what they do or don’t know.

I know in 2007-2008 their number was 120 million just above Ohio St, I know in 2009 they were at 138 million again just above Ohio St. I honestly haven’t seen the 2010 number, but you don’t get it obviously. Ohio St has helped make a whole conference richer & stronger while getting theirs. Texas on the other hand has hand-cuffed it’s 2nd with short-sighted thinking. You may not get it yet, but others do, and so does Texas, now.

Thanks, Nebraska.

We're sure sad to see you move on to the Rust Belt Conference but, hey, money's money. We understand.

I'd prefer to remember the good times: The time we kicked your ass in the inaugural Big XII Championship Game even though you were ranked third and we were ranked 20th. Then there's the fact that you couldn't beat us in your on home stadium. Gee, you'd have those nice, pretty home winning streaks until Texas would show up and then -poof-  that winning streak was gone; whether it came from a last-second touchdown or a last-second field goal, the Longhorns always came away with the win. And then there's that final Big XII Championship game where you had the game won only to have the Horns get one second put back on the clock and win the title.

Yeah, we'll miss putting the Big Red in their place. It was truly a lot of fun.

But, enjoy the Rust Belt Conference. Clearly, you don't need to play basketball very well to join up with those boys. I mean, look at Penn State. So the Rust Belt is a good fit for you guys. And instead of getting your straw hats handed to you by Texas and Oklahoma, it'll now come from Ohio State and Michigan. And nothing will have changed.

Good luck, bugeaters. We'll miss ya.

Nebraska trounces Texas, moves to Big Ten

I'm happy to see everyone crying over how Texas is a big bully and how it won't let anyone do anything. People need to put on their big boy pants. I can't wait to see Nebraska travel to the Big 10 and find out that their won't be anything different there. Money wise yes they might be better off... But fans don't care about money. They care about success and I don't see Nebraska thriving anymore in the Big 10 than they did in the Big 12.
Maybe Nebraska is still bitter because they lost the Big12 championship game to Texas in a controversal matter (The final outcome was fair however, but don't tell Nebraska fans that).
And Texas will be fine. They are going to the Pac-10 to play a depleted USC and they get to bring all their rivals with them. Texas couldn't ask for a better situation in any sport, not just football.
And all these power hungry teams are crying because they don't get a say but that is comparable to a little child telling daddy what to do... it doesn't happen. But Nebraska threw a fit and got what it wanted and I for one could care less.
I'm sad to see the Big12 split because I felt like the Big12 had some of the more exciting games and unique styles but off to the Pac10 to continue on with the success. Good luck Nebraska.

Nebraska trounces Texas, moves to Big Ten

Texas has the richest athletic department in the country.

The capitalized value of the Longhorns is $119 million, $11 million more than second-ranked University of Notre Dame.

Texas has much better academics that any other school in Big 12. Not only are the undergraduate programs highly ranked, several graduate programs are Top 5 or Top 10. Texas has the most research endowment in all schools in Big 12.

Texas did Big 12 a favor by joining it, and sharing the wealth it built out of its brand.

Nebraska, screw you, and don't let the door hit your arse on the way out. While

Nebraska trounces Texas, moves to Big Ten

Hey Chad you dumb^&*, Texas led all achools with $180 million in revenue last year. They didn't hose themselves.  They hosed 5 other Big 12 teams.  They are going to make more money than that with the pac 10.  You have to fall down yourself first before you "land on your feet".  They never fell down and aren't going to.  You must have gone to Dennis Dodd school of retarded writing.  Jesus

EastTX,

Really, the 3rd biggest?!?!? WOW I'll reign it in then. Honestly and just to prove to you that I’m not all too filled with self-importance, I don’t post here often and can’t yet figure out how to make it so it isn’t really smaller print so this has been the alterative. I’ll try again.

Aaaahhh, More from Mr. Sucks,

Texas is 10-5 All-time vs the Big 10 and as the 2nd winningest team all-time they should be. But they are 2-1 vs Oho St, 1-0 vs UM 2-3 vs PSU and 1-1 vs Iowa, all in they have been hotly contested contests. Hardly dominating if you will.

Iowa ironically enough is one game behind UM to be the 2nd winningest team in the Big 10 since 2000 and like 2-7 vs PSU of yore yet you omit them from your Big 2 above. I’d say you are a fringe fan without any real knowledge, or so it seems, of the Big 10 and it’s hierarchy.

Incidentally did you know that the Big 10 has way more NFL alumni than the Big 12 and it is by a lot, with one less team at that? I’d say the sledding (literally) would be decidedly more difficult for them.
