Nebraska trounces Texas, moves to Big Ten

LINCOLN, Neb. -- It was the worst beating Texas has taken in public in at least seven years.

That 65-13 loss to Oklahoma in 2003 was only a football game. Nebraska officials spent the better part of 40 minutes Friday putting Bevo in his place.

Nebraska didn't just leave the Big 12 for the Big Ten on Friday, it told the world why: That bully Texas. In the space of eight days, Nebraska transformed from happy member of the Big 12 to angry, rancorous new member of the Big Ten.

Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman and AD Tom Osborne both took turns hammering Texas during a comment period before the board of regents. When they got done, there was only one possible result. The regents' vote was unanimous. Nebraska is headed to the Big Ten. Unspoken: Because Texas forced it out.

The moment the news broke last week about the Pac-10's desire to take Texas and five Big 12 partners, Nebraska turned sour. Perlman, at one point, stared across a table during the Big 12 meetings at his Texas counterpart Bill Powers and asked him if he was willing to give up his media rights. In other words, start a Big 12 Network. Powers said no. At that point, Perlman knew it was over.

This league had a chance to survive seven years ago but a possible network was voted down, obviously not supported by Texas. Now, it's clear the Pac-10 is going to get Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma.

Super conferences, start your engines.

The money quote from Osborne: "One school leaving a conference does not break up a conference. Two schools leaving a conference does not break up a conference. Six schools leaving a conference, breaks up a conference. We have not had a hidden agenda, we have not dealt with more than one conference."

T.O. intimated that Texas has been talking to the SEC, Big Ten and Pac-10.

It was a bad day for Texas' reputation. It was a good day for Nebraska's future.

How's it a smokescreen?  The man said in plain English what was going on.  There's email evidence of UT courting the Big 10.  There's reports of Pac 10 representatives on campus in Austin.

Tom Osborne and Harvey Perlman explained their position and asked the appropriate questions.  Nebraska would've stayed if the conference could assure that both Mizzou and CU leaving would not break up the Big 12.  No one could give that assurance.  Nebraska asked all the Big 12 members to share their TV revenue.  Of course selfish Texas would not.

The UT president had Dan "The Puppet" Beebe give us all the deadline for our undying committment to the Big 12.  Nebraska asked how long this undying committment would last.  Oh, til 2016.  Wow, 6 years.  Six years for what?  For UT to find a better dance partner and bolt?  Texas and Texas fans and apologists are just mad that Nebraska beat 'em to the punch.  It will give all Husker fans great satisfaction when we wipe the floor with Texas this last season of the Big 12, hopefully twice, just to make a statement.  Fourteen years of being jerked around is enough.  Nebraska was proactive.  Nebraska wins.  Now UT can play catch up, see how it feels.

Well Mr. Sucks,

I appreciate your input, but that might be because you are a Huskies fan who is currently being jilted by the Big 10. I’ve been on your rival’s board, lots of crying and gnashing of teeth over the lack of Big 10 love, so I’m not sure you are an object of impartiality.

The SEC is better, but not by as much as people want them to be. In fact I believe the Bowl records over the last 10 years are about 1 or 2 games off from being even.

Texas would not run 12-0 in the SEC or Big Ten....They will have a better chance of doing it with the Pac-10 at least for a few years....

Texas would not be 12-0 in the SEC, you are correct.
Texas WOULD ABSOLUTELY DESTROY every team in the Big 10.  Listen, the Big 10 is nowhere near the SEC in talented programs and you dumbass Big 10 fans that keep comparing the two as if they are equals are freakin delusional.
The Big 10 is now Ohio State, Penn State and 9 other completely mediocre programs.  Period.

Well ,

I’m continually dumfounded that people are still so dense. By serving others, and giving a little up front Texas could have saved the Big 12 and made MORE long run, but they wouldn’t/couldn’t see the forest thru the trees. Keep thinking Texas should “get” theirs.

Here is an example….The Big 10 is debatably the 3rd strongest league on the field and the supposed laughing stock of college football. They share revenue equally however and as a whole are the most powerful, preemptive league in college sports. The Ohio St University is still the flagship school making only slightly less than your beloved Horns, yet the rest of the schools all made serious bank and in fact the University of Iowa is 1 of only 6 schools in the country that have had produced a net Athletic Department profit each of the last 6 years.

It is progressive thinking, serve others, serve yourself, share and get rewarded big. Obviously Texas doesn’t get it, but the Big 10 and SEC do!?!? It’s no secret they aren’t dissolving eh, friend?

You keep coloring Texas as the good guy. The proof lies in the causalities of war!

Nebraska trounces Texas, moves to Big Ten

" I say to Texas... if you want to play with the big boys, join the SEC or Big 10, otherwise enjoy those nice trips up to seattle in November! "

I say to you you are completely clueless.
The Big 10 is "the big leagues" in the same class as the SEC??
You mean the Conference that is 2-6 in its last 8 BCS games and went 1-7 in Bowl games just 2 years ago is "The Big Leagues"?
Give me a break.  The Big 10 is a marketing monster with tremendous reach, there is no question about that.  But they are not now nor will they be for some time in the class of the SEC.
PS.  I am NOT an SEC fan.  Just someone tired of hearing from Big 10 fans about how talented their Conference is.  Nebraska is now a mediocre program joining a mediocre Conference.

Nebraska trounces Texas, moves to Big Ten

Well Mr ready,

The number one thing wrong with society right now is that people are incapable of being honest with themselves. If you can’t be honest with yourself you sure can’t with others and people trick themselves into believing folly every day.

The 2nd biggest thing wrong with our society is the inability people have of embracing cognitive thinking.

I have followed college football diligently for many years. I’m pretty well read on the subject actually. Yes Texas MAY join the Big 10 but ONLY under the Big 10’s terms. So yes Texas will still come out smelling roses, but it isn’t what they wanted. They wanted to “control” their peers and they will no longer be able to and that is good for football.

They also wont be stealing recruits out of the Midwest, why would they. They have all they can sign at home?!?!

The point being Texas is no better than Ohio St talent wise and maybe not as good, honestly? They are fantastic, but the Big 10 takes no back seat to them or the Big 12?

And now Texas will reap what they sowed, a nice comfy seat at the table, but not the perch on the top of the mountain.

Nebraska trounces Texas, moves to Big Ten

not really a win win when you lose your power over the conference and the money will actually be split fairly so that will make the conference much more competitive.
What is it about this move that you don't understand? If Texas goes to the Big 10 or PAC-10 we'll get even more money than we get now. It was never about wanting unequal revenue sharing for the sake of it, but because we draw more revenue to the conference, period.

Nebraska, again, voted over and over for UNEQUAL revenue sharing and your slice was about $2M less than Texas annually.

Now, when we go on to our next conference, where there will likely be equal TELEVISION revenue sharing (based on a CONFERENCE NETWORK like the Big-10 network) we'll make as much or more than we do now. Most likely more.

Only cornhuskers with inferiority complexes think that this is about "power".

Nebraska trounces Texas, moves to Big Ten

Wow, what a joke let's blame the all mighty Texas for global warming while we are at it. So let me get this straight because Texas's media rights (ie Bevod) actually make money, then they should share them with the schools that don't make money on media rights, is that about correct??? I thought a cornhusker education was better than that, its buisness people buisness, thats all thats it. If Nebraska wants their own TV network, then go for it, but don't blame texas for not letting you in on their already established one. Texas makes the most money and everyone wants some of the pie. Texas could hold the confrence together but for what, to be cast as a bully, to say "texas runs the show", and hear the anyalist whine about how easy their schedule (cause they play the likes of the bottom feeding cornhuskers) is no thanks. Do you hear Deloss Dodds talking smack on Stoops? No, Texas has more class in one finger than all of the cornhusker nation. does anyone remember the 90's when texas sucked and Nebraska was amazing, I did not hear any whining from them then, but my how the tides turn. Have fun in the Big 10 getting worked on. And who cares if its in Omaha, great place, great game, no reason to change, and it was nothing to do with the university. Also that crap about putting a second back on, hey remember the 09' season when texas got screwed despite beating OU! Deal with it, it had nothing to do with Texas and a championship game, refs have jobs and they make the best call they could and a lot of people see it as the right call, but if thats the way the cornhuskers sleep at night so be it. I feel sorry for cornhusker nation, that was a really cheap shot at an organization that shows nothing but class and respect for its opponents, just cause they won't give you some money. If a confrence is more than one team, guess what start a network without texas. Again people this is biz, but nebraska obviously took it personal, all i can say is you stay classy nebraska you stay classy.

Nebraska trounces Texas, moves to Big Ten

Again, I'ts not that Nebraska was upset that they could not get anything they wanted they were just sick of seeing Texas get everything they wanted.... Now they lose their precious "texas" network, Nebraska will be in a much better conference, Texas will be where it belongs... in a conference with other overrated teams who will have no strength in schedule and finally get the treatment they deserve.
