Riffing on the preseason coaches' poll...

Posted on: August 7, 2010 4:03 pm

Nick Saban really is questioning whether Alabama is No. 1. He apparently gave his No. 1 vote to Ohio State.

Boise State is way too low at No. 5. I expected the Broncos to start at No. 3, at least. Nevertheless, Boise carries the banner for all non-BCS schools. Its ranking gives it a realistic chance at playing in the championship game if it goes undefeated. Only three conferences are represented among the four teams above it in the poll. Either Alabama or Florida will be "eliminated" when they meet Oct. 2. Boise should be concerned if Texas and/or Ohio State go undefeated. If two BCS conference teams go undefeated that could possibly block Boise. Of course, the Broncos should be used to that by now. The point is, Boise has the best shot of any team in the 13-year history of the BCS to become a non-BCS national champion.

Was it only two years ago that Georgia was the unanimous preseason No. 1? It starts this season at No. 21.

This is the third year in a row the SEC has been the coaches' preseason No. 1.

Looking ahead to 2011: There are five teams in the top 14 (including Nebraska) that will be Big Ten members next season.

No. 14 Penn State is the first team to play three teams that won BCS bowls the previous year. All three start the season in the top 10 -- No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 10 Iowa.

Oklahoma finished 2009 unranked. It debuts at No. 8.

No. 20 Florida State (7-6) has the worst 2009 record of any team in the top 25.

Surprise! Six SEC teams are in the poll.

Per urging from American Football Coaches Association director Grant Teaff, South Carolina's Steve Spurrier did not cast his traditional No. 25 vote for Duke, the school that gave him his first head coaching job.

No team has won back-to-back coaches' poll titles in the BCS era. USC won the AP title in 2003 and was unanimous champion in 2004. Of course, that might not last if the BCS rips the '04 title because of Reggie Bush.

It will be interesting to see where USC debuts in the AP poll. Remember, the Trojans can win a national championship in AP but cannot be considered in the coaches' poll. The Trojans could win the AP title but technically can't win its own conference. The program has been hit with a two-year bowl ban.

Don't start with that Boise crap before they even play a game!!!! When they start playing in a conference that has some respectable teams in it , I will listen to their whining asses, but until then that point is mute!!!It is amazing to me that if they are so good then why isent a GOOD conference interested in them?I am tired of all of the Boise St. crap!!!!Do what you have to do to improve your chances at actually having a legitimate chance of being a REAL contender!!!!

I actually think it isnt pipedream thinking Terps.  THey have great line play this year, not like last.  QB will be better but running backs will be very good.  Torrey Smith is maybe best at what he does this year in country.

Chemen3 every year is another year.  ACC is very deep and very good.  One team can win BCS, ie Florida, Alabama, but if they dont have champio and no very good team behind them how good are they.  If VT played any SE team this year they would be favorite.  Lets see how they do with Boise State.  So what is wrong with wishbone as GT and Navy play it.  Seems noone is defending it very well.  Best defense against GT ast year was a weak Terp team, does it say something?

As Adsuperdupe says - GO TERPS!!!!!

You are right on setmethe ball.  It was basically what I was trying to say.  ACC this year is about as good as every other conference, maybe better than most.  Team winning in conference will have played a very tough schedule.

I guess where I stand alone is that I feel Terps will be there.  Test is Navy, similar to Boise State in that they don't play a very tough schedule outside of a few games.  If Terps beat Navy and VT (very tough) they will be like Bball team, up there.

you mean one of those tough schedules that say florida did last year when at the end of the year including bowl games they played 3 ranked teams.  Alabama crushing them.  Limping past an average LSU team and fine crushing Cincinatti who everyone in the country knew was in over their head.  because it really doesn't matter where a team is ranked when you play them it matters how they end up.  Florida beat a bunch of losers last year and when they played a real team Alabama they were shown what they truly were.  I'm tired of SEC fans using their schedules like this yes you play in the SEC but it's balanced by decisions such as the defending champs to play for their opener Georgia State in their first ever football game.  The SEC earned this reputation as the strongest deepest conference in college football, but I feel like they hide behind it now and just take their inflated rankings througout the year.  six games into the season we'll see the same bias where a 3-3 SEC team is ranked and teams that have better records won't.

Are you really this dumb?

You want Boise to schedule 4 top 15 teams for ooc. Interesting. You do know that most teams schedule games years in advance, right? Well probably not if you make a statement this stupid.

Hey Boise! Schedule 4 top 15 teams since you can see the frickin future! While you're at it tell us how the world will end.

Reply in Order
1. ACC has alot of very good teams, maybe none of them are great (top 5) but 5 of them deserve to be ranked between number 10 and 25.  That is not "Really bad"
2.  Good football only at the top for the SEC.   Alabama and Florida have won their championships, but Tennesse still loses to UCLA and Georgia to Oklahoma St last year.
3. Big 10 also has 4 teams that should be ranked between 10 an 25 and Ohio State should be very good, we will see when they play Miami, Fl.
4.  Boise St plays Virgina Tech and Oregon St and that is no one.   Virginia did play for a National Championship before and lost but it is the best non conference game in the country this year and the SEC is chicken to playone good, the best is Alabama at Penn State, and I think Penn St is down this and Alabama wins easily.
5. BCS is about the money, I finally agree with you, but I still think the fix will be in so Boise St does play in the One Game Playoff called the BCS championship game.
6.  I hope Boise does get to a BCS game and does play TCU again, who I also hope to get there.   Boise has done well beating a top Oregon team, beat Oklahoma, and has beat Oregon St.     I suspect they will do well, if not win, in any game they get with a traditional BCS power.    I want to see you post if Boise actually beats them, you have already decided Va Tech is "nobody".

As a person wanting a college playoff I want to see these teams play to know how good they are.   Right now we rarely get a game between BCS teams and other BCS out of conference teams or top Non BCS Conference teams.   When we do we only get them early in the season when teams are getting the kinks worked out, or in a bowl game which the honest truth is many teams do not really show up to play except in the one "BCS Championship" game that really means something.    Even the Georgia/Georgia Tech South Carolina/Clemson type games late in the season often do not mean something because on or the other team is disapointed with their season.

A College Playoff with 16 teams, 11 conference champion, would give us 15 games with everything on the line and would help us really figure out which conferences are really better than the others, atleast for that year, otherwise the SEC blowhards can keep crowing for years and find something to say great about their conference.   The SEC was 6-4 in bowl games last year, which is good, but the Mountain West was 4-1 and the one loss was to Boise St.

Boise State, has, what 4 ooc games a year?  They couldn't find 4 top 15 teams that have the ballsacks to play them in a home-and-home in the same couple of years, even if they wanted to.

Riffing on the preseason coaches' poll...

Reading all of these comments I get more and more bugged by the ranking of the Boise Statesx and Utah et al.  Yes they can win the one or two games even the big bowl games yerarly.  What they can't prove is how tey would do week in and week out.  They don't play talented big competitive teams weekly.  It wears on teams.  They have more injuries.  It isn't the Boise States of the country who are at fualt it is how college football is laid out.

Good teams don"t want to play these teams as options.  Nothing to gain.  Until it is figured out and they play competitive games it will be argumentative how good they really are.  If a team runs a major conference a Alabama did last year it isn't even a contest.  THis is any major except maybe the PAC 10.  Actually PAC 10 included.
