Mike Leach lands analyst's gig

Posted on: August 16, 2010 12:15 pm

CBS College Sports just announced that Mike Leach has joined its lineup as an analyst.

The only thing better than watching Leach coach is watching him talk -- off the cuff and frankly. For obvious reasons, Leach probably wasn't going to join ESPN but this is a good place for him during his off year. I have no doubt that he will be back in coaching in 2011. You've already seen me and others speculate about a possible opening at Oklahoma State. Makes total sense.

Stay tuned for an upcoming book from Bruce Feldman on Leach. Should be entertaining. This is the same guy who wrote "Meat Market" about Ole Miss and "Cane Mutiny" about Miami. Should be an instant classic.

No player was locked anywhere.  Regarding the closet....the player was specifically instructed not to go in there.  He had to, however, to shoot his little youtube video.  Sealed

Mike Leach lands analyst's gig

I wish you had all the facts.  Published emails by the Dallas Morning News proves that Tech and the BoR set out to get him fired during the next year so that they wouldn't have to pay him.  He was fired the day before they had to pay him $800,000.  Also, when the James boys had to give their depositions, they prove that Coach Leach did not do what Tech said he did.  Please give Coach Leach a chance to get all of this out in the open.  Team Leach is doing everything possible to get it all out there!

I am a member of Team Leach and a '67 graduate of Tech.  My husband and I were appalled at how Coach Leach was fired and for what reason.  We thought, surely there has to be more to the story.  There is.  There are emails that have been published by the Dallas Morning News to prove that they had planned for a year to fire Coach Leach so that they wouldn't have to pay him the money. Hence, he was fired the day before he was to be paid $800,000.  Also, the depositions given in court prove that Coach Leach did not do what they claim he did.  Both father and son James depositions prove that.  Please give Coach Leach a chance to prove himself.  Team Leach is out to get the people fired who did this illegally AND we are trying to help Coach Leach get his good name and reputation back!!!  You will find that it a had to do with egos and money.  Thank you!

Should be a nice little one year gig.  Next year after he cashes in that big check that Tech is going to settle out of court with, he will be coaching the Colorado Buffs in the  newly expanded Pac 10.  If Colorado can muster up enough money to buy their way out of the Big 12.

anyways

Mike Leach is the person that he is because he says "screw politics." He doesn't have to learn about politics & academia because he is smart enough to know how most people play the game; he has simply decided not to abide by those rules. Sure, it's going to cost him some jobs, but some will hire him because he is a great coach & because he is a breath of fresh air. Potential lawsuits don't stop schools from hiring coaches any more than potential NCAA sanctions stop them.

Good luck whereever you land, Mike. I kind of hope it will be somewhere in the Big 12 so you can keep terrorizing the other schools.

Leach is not a second tier coach, taking Texas Tech, a second tier Big 12 school, to the Top 10 in the country is the type of stuff that got Urban Meyer his job at Florida.    Leach can use the whistle to win games as well as anyone.

I am no fan of locking players in a closet for being hurt and other cheap coaching tricks that well paid coaches do to student athletes that can be cut from a team and a scholarship at a moments notice.   The NCAA and many coaches have far to much leway and 2nd chances when the students rarely get any.   I am not sure if Mike Leach should be the poster boy for boarish college coaches, but I certainly enjoy them getting the media spotlight on them.

CBS has a vested interest in Leach.  After all, 60 Minutes did one of its famous celebrity portraits on him.  And would we expect Dodd to do anything but say that the decision of his corporate management was to hire Leach was a great one.  Forget the incident that got him fired and Leach is nothing but a second tier coach at best.

I just hope that if leach ever does get another big time coaching spot - he's learned that politics indeed are part of not only surviving but thriving in that industry.

A lack of that was his ultimate downfall last year and I really don't think any college will hire him until he shows at least a little ability to play the "political game". Yes, he indeniably has the ability to be a big time coach - but I wouldn't be too sure he gets a job in the near future from a school that has to inherit the thought they could be his next law suit defendant!
