So far it's only anonymously sourced, but there are multiple rumors and reports that BYU is considering leaving the Mountain West to become an independent.

BYU would be prompted to leave the 11-year-old league after Utah bolted to the Pac-10 this summer. BYU may feel that the conference will ultimately be diminished financially and competitively without Utah. With a worldwide following, BYU could keep all its revenue becoming a mini-Notre Dame: Playing football independently and putting its other sports in the WAC.

BYU pulling out would severely damage the Mountain West which thought this summer it hard shored up its BCS chances by grabbing Boise State (beginning in 2011). With Utah leaving for the Pac-10, the Mountain West would be down to eight teams. BYU was not invited to the Pac-10 because it made little sense for the league to get two teams from the Salt Lake City market. Also, there were academic concerns about BYU compared to other Pac-10 institutions. It is neither a member of the elite Association of American Universities nor a highly rated Carnegie research institution. Seven of the 10 current Pac-10 members are both. The other three are either one or the other. Utah, for example, is rated by Carnegie.

The MWC is hoping for automatic BCS qualifier status in 2012 and 2013. The Mountain West is currently being evaluated (along with all other I-A leagues) on a four-year rotating basis. The BCS is halfway through that evaluation process.

Without talking about BYU specifically, Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick told CBSSports.com this week that it is still possible and advantageous for a school going independent.

"You've got to solve the non-football side of the equation," Swarbrick said, "but it can work. I don't know if there will be others but it wouldn't shock me because the landscape is so fluid."

Swarbrick added he had not spoken to any particular school about it becoming an independent. There are currently only three independents in Division I-A -- Notre Dame, Army and Navy.

This is what BYU AD Tom Holmoe told the Salt Lake City Tribune in July:

"Independence is an option that obviously has been out there. We will look at everything. We have looked at everything. There are pros and cons to the Pac-10, the Big Ten, the Big 12, the Mountain West Conference and independence. With all these things there are pros and cons.

"So what you have to do is you have to weigh those and measure them against what? What is right for BYU. And not for what is right for BYU in the year 2010, but what is right for BYU into the future.

"That is quite a bit more complex than most people understand. You have got a constituency to deal with. You have got a school to deal with. "

Here is the rest of that interview.

Some outlets are citing a tweet, reportedly coming from Colorado State, that the move will be announced at a Thursday press conference. The school was in the process Wednesday morning releasing a statement denying the tweet had come from Colorado State. A school spokesman said someone had hacked into the school account that could be accessed by only three persons from Colorado State.

I'm sure the powers that be have sorted, or are sorting through these questions, but I have to ask:  BCS bowls aside, what are the opportunities for second or third tier bowls without a conference alliance?  How will this affect recruiting?  Sure you can say, "We can and will play anybody and we have a contract with (fill in network here)."  Without an ESPN, FOX, or other contract, will they be able to sell the BYU Network to potential recruits?  There are many unknowns a potential recruit will have to consider.  Has an independent outside of Notre Dame ever been successful?  Utah State was independent a few years ago and it set their program back 100 years.  Total disaster.

As a BYU fan I guess I'm a little torn.  We need to get out from under the restrictions inherent to the MWC, but is this the right move?  It's exciting and scary at the same time.

If BYU wants to leave, God bless them...this is America.  As long as they are not contractually bound or not willing to amicably buy out of said contract.  However, IMO they do not have the national support that a Notre Dame or Navy has to opporate profitably, unless the church is willing to suppliment them.  Again, done right it is their right...how smart that would be is the $64,000 question.

What cracks me up is that you actually believe the drivel you spew. Looks to me like BYU didn't want you scrubs anymore.

The MWC has a TV deal that is tiny compared to other conferences laughably so.

With the defection of Utah, it is highly unlikely that the MWC will get a BCS invite.

BYU would have a much better chance for the BCS game as an independent.

They can schedule a much stronger schedule and finish in the top 8 every year using that loophole route.

A move to independence actually makes more sense for BYU than playing teams that will bring down the schedule strength.

Notre Dame isn't even Notre Dame anymore.  And I don't buy the "academic issues" as to why they didn't get selected for the Pac-10.  The Pac-10 was willing to take Texas Tech.  They are academically one of the worst schools in D1.  I think they are posturing to get picked up by the Big 12 (minus 2) or the Big Ten (plus 2).

Trak,
Huh??  Has BYU basketball finished behind UNLV once in the past 5 years???  BYU, SDSU, New Mexico...then maybe UNLV.  Typical Rebel fan, constantly thinking your basketball team is better than it really is.

I personally think it to be just rumor. BYU is not so stupid as to pull out of the MWC until it finds out if the MWC gets to join the BCS. Besides they would have a snow balls chance in hell to get to a BCS bowl as and independent. They can be called a Mini-Notre Dame, but the fact is that they are not Notre Dame.

I think Ind. is the best move for BYU outside of Big XII, or MWC.

It would Mercilously kill any BCS hopes and one wonders what the MWC will do.  How about the WAC. wow those two leagues are serious rivals.

I think the MWC should take Hawaii, Fresno State, San Jose State, and hold your breath... New Mexico State (hahaha, I know they suck but geographically it makes sense, and could replace New Mexico WHEN it leaves for the Big XII.)

Then for some reason La Tech goes to Con. USA, or sun belt.

MWC
1.San Diego State
2.San Jose State
3.Fresno State
4.UNLV
5.Colorado State (probably going to Big XII)
6.New Mexico (probably going to Big XII)
7.New Mexico State
8.Boise State

WAC leaving

Idaho
Utah State
Nevada

the WAC goes to FCS and steals from the Big Sky or merges? to form

WAC or Big Sky

1. Idaho
2. Idaho State
3. Utah State
4. Nevada
5. Montana
6. Montana State
7. Gonzaga (non-football, low chance)
8. Portland State
9. Portland (Small chance but if Gonzaga joins then maybe)
10.Seattle (is coming back from DIII and wants to be with Portland and Gonzaga)
11.BYU (everything but football)

Possible other teams
Northern Arizona
Sacramento State
Alaska-Anchorage
Alaska-Fairbanks
British Columbia
Simon Frasier
Alberta
Calgary
Denver (non football school)
Wyoming Tech. (Casper, WY; not sure they even have sports)

Almost no chance that this will all happen. just thinkin geography.

I guess BYU is tired of being 2nd best to UNLV in basketball. What a bunch of scrubs. We don't want you in the Mtn west anyway, zoobs.
