The Football Writers Association of America has vacated USC's 2004 national championship and asked the school to return the Grantland Rice Trophy that symbolized that title.

The announcement was made Thursday morning after a resolutions committee voted by confidential ballot. USC will be eligible for the FWAA's preseason poll but cannot win the trophy in 2010. The action was taken after NCAA penalties were handed down in June. Among other violations, the NCAA concluded that former tailback Reggie Bush competing while ineligible

The Grantland Rice Trophy has been awarded continuously to its national champion since 1954 by the FWAA. The BCS is on record as saying it will vacate the USC title if the school's NCAA appeal fails. The Heisman Trophy Trust is still discussing its stance on Bush's 2004 award. Shortly after taking the job, new USC AD Pat Haden ordered the school's copy of Bush's trophy returned to the trust.

Tim Griffin, the current FWAA president, wrote this in his letter notifying USC of the FWAA's decisions: "Had these facts been known, USC would not have been selected for the award ... in light of standards applicable to FWAA poll participants, award candidates and award recipients. All finalists for FWAA team and individual awards, including the Grantland Rice Award and Trophy, reasonably are presumed to have been in material compliance with certain qualifying standards at the time of award issuance."

The coaches' poll is not ranking USC this season because the school is on NCAA probation. USC remains eligible to be ranked in the Associated Press poll and can finish No. 1. It is No. 14 in the AP preseason poll. The AP did not strip USC of its 2004 title.

The FWAA took no action to elevate a new champion for 2004. It stated that USC is eligible for its preseason poll but will not be eligible to be voted on in its season-ending poll. Auburn was also notified of Thursday's action by the FWAA. In addition to USC, Auburn and Utah also finished undefeated that season.

The FWAA is one of four major championship selectors recognized by the NCAA. This is the first time the FWAA has taken such action.

FWAA vacates USC 2004 title

Who cares?  NCAA Div 1 Football does not have a national champion anyway.  There is no way to know who was best that year or any other year.

Oh...CBS - you need to go back to the old format.  This new format blows.  Not sure which is worse, your new format or the BCS.

Thoughtful because you agree with them? Irrelevant because you disagree? I would venture to say far more people know what the AP poll is and consider it far more relevant and meaningful. I would also venture to say that given a choice among schools of which they would prefer to win, it wouldn't even be close.

While I understand that USC violated NCAA rules, I hate the concept of rewriting history like this, particularly when it comes to a championship that is decided in such an arbitrary manner.

The FWAA is a more thoughtful group than the band wagon AP fools who vote in their poll.  I think the Grantland Rice Trophy says more about a team than any AP poll.   And now that the AP refuses to participate in the BCS, the AP is irrelevant.

USC was pretty good that year, but they never faced Auburn on the field.  It would have been a better championship game than what we ended up with.

It's always a sad day to be an Auburn fan. The 2004 team wasn't even better than the 92 bama team. Both The 98 Tenn team was better. Don't forgot USC beat the shit out of yall in 03 in your own back yard when yall were post be the real deal. How was last year Bama team on probation?? In 04 the west sucked bama was 6-6, Ark was 5-7, Miss State was 3-8, Ole Miss was 4-7. That means it leaves ya with two teams that was good from the west if the other 4 weren't good. So yeah that's an impressive fact whooo.

The FWAA actually thinks they are relevant?

The FWAA is little sister to the AP.  They don't matter.  Most college football fans aren't even aware of them.  And 99% could not tell you what a Grantland Rice Trophy is.  The mere fact that they issued a press release for this seems to be a low-ball attempt to regain some attention or legitimacy.  Give it up, FWAA.  You haven't mattered in College Football never mattered.  Just a bunch of loser sports journalists with zero athletic ability having a yearly circle jerk under the guise of football expertise.  What a crock!

"If the FWAA falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

Once a cheater always a cheater.  Pete Carroll and USC didn't know how to win so they had to revert to cheating.. how sad.  Oh well atleast i don't have to listen to any of these front running USC fans again this year.

And wouldn't it be fitting if Bush himself carried it to them.  A perfect example of justice in sports.  A player goes to school, participates in sports, cheats, lies, turns pro, gets millions, helps win a Super Bowl ring, gets found out, the SCHOOL gets punished, the current PLAYERS get punished, the COACH gets a pro job, and all ends well.  REGGIE your parents should be proud - wait a minute, they got the payments and home, they probably ARE very proud you SCUM.
