The Football Writers Association of America has vacated USC's 2004 national championship and asked the school to return the Grantland Rice Trophy that symbolized that title.

The announcement was made Thursday morning after a resolutions committee voted by confidential ballot. USC will be eligible for the FWAA's preseason poll but cannot win the trophy in 2010. The action was taken after NCAA penalties were handed down in June. Among other violations, the NCAA concluded that former tailback Reggie Bush competing while ineligible

The Grantland Rice Trophy has been awarded continuously to its national champion since 1954 by the FWAA. The BCS is on record as saying it will vacate the USC title if the school's NCAA appeal fails. The Heisman Trophy Trust is still discussing its stance on Bush's 2004 award. Shortly after taking the job, new USC AD Pat Haden ordered the school's copy of Bush's trophy returned to the trust.

Tim Griffin, the current FWAA president, wrote this in his letter notifying USC of the FWAA's decisions: "Had these facts been known, USC would not have been selected for the award ... in light of standards applicable to FWAA poll participants, award candidates and award recipients. All finalists for FWAA team and individual awards, including the Grantland Rice Award and Trophy, reasonably are presumed to have been in material compliance with certain qualifying standards at the time of award issuance."

The coaches' poll is not ranking USC this season because the school is on NCAA probation. USC remains eligible to be ranked in the Associated Press poll and can finish No. 1. It is No. 14 in the AP preseason poll. The AP did not strip USC of its 2004 title.

The FWAA took no action to elevate a new champion for 2004. It stated that USC is eligible for its preseason poll but will not be eligible to be voted on in its season-ending poll. Auburn was also notified of Thursday's action by the FWAA. In addition to USC, Auburn and Utah also finished undefeated that season.

The FWAA is one of four major championship selectors recognized by the NCAA. This is the first time the FWAA has taken such action.

It would ge greatness to see USC ranked # 1 in the AP poll at the end of this season.  Can you imagine the discussions taking place if that were to occur?  With a 13 game schedule, and 7 of those games on the road, it would be very interesting to hear the discussions if, in fact, USC started the season going 9-0 or 10-0.  I can see Kiffin now "jawing" with all of the media saying things like, "Well, you won't allow us to play in a bowl game or a championship game, but it is clear that we are the best team in the country and the well-respected AP poll emphasizes that as well".

GO TROJANS!  13-0 in 2010

FWAA vacates USC 2004 title

I'm a huge fan of school spirit and have many friends that are attending or have graduated from USC.  Having said that, when their fans are in packs they turn into huge A-holes.  The language and the arrogance are always present.  I remember flying from LAX to SFO years ago.  USC was playing Cal and the flight was overrun with students from the University of Second Class!  None of the students sat in their assigned seats and I'll never forget the elderly couple telling three inebriated students that they were occupying their seats... The articulate reply from the drunken student was, "Why don't you go f*** yourselves!" Classy representation for such a fine institution... Need I say more?  They're getting everything they deserve.  FIGHT ON indeed!!

before we take titles.  let's remember the people who bestow those titles.  a bunch of never has been writers.  let's do an investigation of their past and see how clean they would be.  i will say now, i am not an SC fan and Pete Carroll is the worst kind of coach.  He devastated the program and left the kids and alumni holding the bag.  He should be held accountable for something.  Back to the point, exactly what did Bush do that made his performance on the field ineligible?  The NCAA has to wake up and give these kids and their families a piece of the pie.  So his mom got a car or a house, who cares.  Universities use the players and lord forbid that the kids get some advantage for the money they put in the schools, AD's, coaches pockets.  Get Real.  And please SC fans, its only football.

You may have your trophy, but the memories are there for life time about the best team on the field that year.

Make sure you give the Trophy to Auburn or Oklahoma they probably deserve it as they did not play the Trojans on the field to win it, but who knows, perhaps one of them will accept the trophy.

So as not to forget, in our Trojan household, we have recorded most of the games for that season as well as post season games and are telling our grand kids about how the Trojans season. I think we have to find 2 more tapes of games played that year, but we have lots of Trojan families we know therefore I am sure we will eventually get the other two games for us to have on hand.

To be fair we are also telling them the facts without the spin about the situation.

Lol @ USC. Their fans deserve this as much as the school itself.
