Mike Leach on Minnesota

The former Texas Tech coaching star kind of expressed his interest in the Minnesota job on his Sirius satellite radio show Monday morning.

Asked by the host specifically about the Minnesota job Leach said, "I'm in a position to listen to anybody."

Leach's name immediately popped up after Tim Brewster was fired on Sunday after 3 1/2 seasons. Minnesota AD Joel Maturi reportedly pursued Tony Dungy who declined but then offered his help in the search.

Leach is in the process of dealing with his lawsuit against his old employer, Texas Tech. Other than that, he's one of the hottest coaching properties out there -- a proven commodity armed with plenty of pirate history.

Message boards and Twitter have lit up with the names of some outlandish replacements for Brewster. Jim Harbaugh? Gary Patterson, Chris Petersen? C'mon, get real. More realistic candidates include Vikings DC Leslie Frazier and San Diego State head coach Brady Hoke.

The program hasn't finished above fourth place in the Big Ten since 1986 and hasn't beaten a ranked team since 2005.

"You're not following Vince Lombardi here," AD Joel Maturi said.

"I haven't given it much thought," Leach continued. "But it's a good program, it's in the Big Ten."

Coach Leach acted properly and with integrity ... you don't sign a letter of apology when you haven't done anything that requires being sorry for. The TTU administration used his refusal as a sign of insubordination and fired him. Laughingly, TTU Admin failed to provide the 10 day period required by Coach Leach's contract (the Admin guys didn't want to pay the $800K Coach Leach was owed if he was still the Coach on December 31) and thereby put not only their actions but the financial status of the institution in jeopardy. Corruption is rampant at TTU ... amazingly only the Pirate had honor!

Yes that is ironic....

Leach can do much better than Minnesota.

Colorado would seem to be a much better fit, as evidenced by that fact that the Buffs have a superior history of success combined with the fact they will be moving to the Pac 10 for the 2011 season.

The Pac 10 would be a perfect conference for Leach to unleash his wide open passing offense on, which will produce pinball machine numbers in a league that features numerous programs with shaky defenses.

Leach hired a great defensive coordinator in Ruffin McNeal...and they rose to #2 in the nation in 2008.  He's a great head coach....but he let his former DC stay too long as a favor.  His former DC Lyle Stetencinch was the same guy who gave Leach his very first coaching job at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.  It was really hard for Coach Leach to get rid of him for sentimental reasons.  But after the 2007 OSU game (ya know....the same game when Gundy blasted the media saying "I'm a man...I'm 40)....after that game, it was the tipping point, and Leach had to fire Setencinch.

He's a great head coach....but needs a great DC.  Or actualy just a decent DC...and they will be unstoppable.

Ironic the man who caused Glen Mason to be outsted after the Gophers last bowl game under Mason could be the man replacing Mason's replacement.  About time Brewster was replaced since day one he has not done well at all.

Jim Leavitt a better choice than Mike Leach

Leavitt has proven an ability to build a program from scratch. I am sure he could build Minnesota in to a Big Ten power. He's a better head coach prospect than Leach that's for damn sure. Leach is a great OC nothing more.

I will Fly to Minnesota

If Coach Leach becomes the coach of Minnesota....I will fly from Texas to Minnesota just to see him coach the AIR RAID!!  And I will buy Gopher Gear and paraphanelia!!

Hell, I might even decide to get a degree from there (distance learning of course), just because Coach Leach is the Coach!

Coach Leach is the reason Glen Mason got fired.  7-38 comeback win with 6 minutes left in the 3rd quarter of the insight bowl. (and that was one of the bad seasons in the Leach era.)

Your version of the story is exactly the Kool Aid that the TTU administration and ESPN have served.

Look at the evidence....I respect leach for not apologizing for something he didn't do.  If your boss asked you to sign a letter of apology for harrassing a co=worker...and you KNEW you didn't do it.....would you sign it??

Mike Leach didn't sign that stupid piece of paper...and he left with his integrity and dignity in tact.  The TTU administration has made a mockery of the school song "strive for honor evermore".

Go Leach!! Boo Tech!!!

Mike Leach woukld be a great add to the U of M.  He has great knowledge for the game and also has been able to recruit some good players(crabtree, harrel) that have excelled under him.  We already are running a spread so the change would not be to big of change.  He would spread some excitment and would immediatly add interests from prospects.  I think he would be a great choice for the Gophers.
