It looks like it's going to be good week for Auburn in the BCS.

The way things are going, though, a week is as much the Tigers can hope for at this point. They seem to be the biggest beneficiary of Missouri's upset of BCS No. 1 Oklahoma on Saturday night. The Tigers are projected to be No. 1 in the BCS on Sunday, followed by Oregon according Jerry Palm's projected BCS standings. Auburn came into Saturday No. 4 in the BCS.

The projection was made before the coaches' and Harris polls -- the two human components of the BCS -- were released on Sunday. Palm said the ranking depends on what the voters do with Auburn after its victory over LSU. Auburn began the day No. 5 in both the Harris and coaches' polls. If the Tigers were to jump over TCU -- No. 3 in Harris, No. 4 in coaches' -- then it could be safely in the top two in the BCS.

After that impressive 60-13 win over UCLA on Thursday, Palm projects that previous No. 1 Oregon will be No. 2 in the BCS. Losses by Oklahoma, LSU and Oklahoma State mean there are seven undefeated teams remaining, only four of them (Auburn, Missouri, Oregon and Michigan State) are from BCS conferences.

Auburn can't celebrate too much. Missouri's victory marked the third consecutive week a No. 1 has gone down on the road. The Tigers travel to Ole Miss this week. For the second consecutive week the BCS and human polls seemingly will be split with Auburn No. 1 in the BCS and Oregon No. 1 in the AP and coaches' polls.

Auburn would become the 13th No. 1 team in the history of the BCS, the fifth from the SEC. The official BCS standings will be released Sunday night.

Its a mythical national championship basically voted on by a bunch of people who the majority are SEC fans. Can you really say in the last ten years that USC wasnt the best team in the country at the end of the season in a few of those years? But because of a screwed up system they didnt win the NC.

Have to love the BCS system....  Alabama starts #1 and stays #1 until they are beaten only because of how they did last year. Boise St. starts #2 because of going undefeated and returning most of their team but despite continually winning - they get jumped over by the flavor of the week each week.....  This week Auburn is the darlings (even though I doubt they could score 17 points on TCU) - last week it was Oklahoma...  What I am wondering is that if all BCS teams are not undefeated, what two one loss teams with jump over Boise & TCU?

JZ it isn't east coast bias ... It's SEC bias and there is a reason why. Look it up bud ... the SEC in BCS games is leaps and bounds above any conference out there. The SEC is 14-5 in BCS games and 6-0 in Championship games ... the only conference remotely close in win % is the Pac 10 ... the rest of the conferences are sitting around a .400 win % or lower. If people want to see the bias go away , 1) Stop the SEC and it starts to go away or 2) Get a playoff.

As for the pounding of UCLA as you put it ... meaning they should be number 1 or at least not drop any. The poll does not award style points, it only recognizes UCLA as a scrub team dropping Oregon's strength of schedule. However, Auburn beat a number 6 team boosting their strength of schedule. But really , like I've always said ... who cares? Number 1 or number 2  ... that's the only postion you need to worry about. If Oregon keeps winning ... TCU, Boise, Mich St or any other undefeated team will not rise above them because there schedule will never be deemed better. Besides ... Auburn has Georgia (which can put together a good game offensively against Auburn's defense), Alabama and the SEC championship should they make it past Alabama. So they would be number 1 at the end of the season anyway should they make it through that mess or not even in the discussion and Oregon will be number 1 at the end of the year. Either way, they win out and they play each other and the Pac 10 has a chance to shut up the SEC.

If he was a running back that rushed for 223 and happened to tack on another 86 passing would you still be making your ridiculous argument...and the team had over 400 on the ground...what would be the point of passing.  I'm anything but an Auburn fan, but even I will give credit where it is due...  LSU didn't stop him and neither would the kindergarten defenses of Oregon or Boise St.

"No other sport does this."

Don't forget about Olympic Figure Skating and Gymnastics!

I fully agree, a system of judges grading team performance to determine the sport's champion is utter nonsense.  How else to explain how the poll following South Carolina's victory over 'Bama finds the Crimson Tide still ranked AHEAD of the team that beat it.  Why are the Buckeyes ranked ahead of Wisconsin?  Plus, those doing the rankings cannot possible watch every game before their ballots are due to be turned in.  It's tiresome to hear that it's not feasible to have a playoff.  The FCS manages just fine.  But, I suppose, as long as fans will continue to tune in to the games and participate in online discussions there will be no impetus to change the format of the sport as the fan interest is perceived by the powers-that-be as being sky-high.
