Declan Sullivan death could cost ND millions

Forbes.com is reporting that Declan Sullivan's death could cost Notre Dame at least $30 million.

The site researched Indiana liability law as well as typical wrongful death cases. That's assuming Sullivan's family sues the school.

It's not a question of ND being able to afford the cost and result of such a case. Notre Dame historically is interested in protecting its "brand". A protracted legal case doesn't do anyone any good. If that means settling with the Sullivans then that might be what it takes.

Here's my take from Sunday.

Declan Sullivan death could cost ND millions

Sullivan's death was tragic.  May he rest in peace.

As for caring about the death of a human being, what will be the effect of draining millions from this institution?  (Ok, so it will be from their insurer; but their premiums will jump -- it will end up costing ND millions in some fashion.)  In the effort to cut expenditures to make up for the loss, ND will inevitably wind up scrimping on some scheduled maintenance, ironically increasing the chances of another tragic accident in the future.  It isn't really clear what the most just response to this would be.

Of course you assume ND does not have insurance.  An award of that amount because of an "act of God" seems unlikely.
Also, this follows on the death of the Notre Dame High School(Sherman Oaks, Ca where Dayne Crist  and Kyle Rudolph
went to high school) cross-country runner.  In that case, the runner ran out into traffic negligently but as part of ND CC
practice. There were no bad weather conditions such as hurricane winds.
Was this kid forced up there or did he just stay up there?

You are ignorant and obnoxious.  Why don't you try reading a book, acting like an adult, and then look into getting some values.  You don't care much about his death as a human being?  Lets watch one of your family members (or do you have kids) lets see them die and I wonder if you would react the same.  You wouldn't.  You're sickening.

It is sad to see that several ND fans are unapologetically concerned about how this effects their pathetic football program.  You just lost to Tulsa because your newly hired coach went for a TD when the offense was in range for an easy FG.  Trust me, the money that the school has to pay as restitution for this young man's death is not going to make your football team any worse.  Thanks for giving me more reasons to root against your irrelevant football team.

Dodd, didn't know you practiced law in your spare time.  Thanks for the legal advice, and I'm sure ND has insurance to cover this.

The amount of money that it could cost ND is extremely relevant. It could cut into their football program (more liekyl they'll cut something else, but you never know), and a protracted battle in court could seriously hurt their recruiting prospects. Sorry if it sounds insensitive, but I didn't know the kid, and it will sound cold, but I don't care that much about his death as a human being. People die all the time. The impact he'll have on ND's football program is much more important to me.

The body's no longer warm.  You know the family's thought of and/or talked about money.  Why can't the rest of us?  Go rub some dirt on your vagina and grow a pair
