Newton playing Saturday

Posted on: November 10, 2010 12:47 pm

Auburn coach Gene Chizik just announced that Cameron Newton will be playing Saturday against Georgia. He would not take any more Newton-related questions on the weekly SEC coaches conference call.

The school will not have a further statement today. ESPN.com reported Tuesday night that Newton and his father Cecil "admitted to a pay-for-play plan."

Actually they do need proof otherwise they could themselves be sued.  This will likely play out in court one way or another.  The NCAA is required to send a letter of inquiry when they are looking at charges against a school.  The NCAA doesn't operate in a total vacuum, and does still have laws it must abide by.  The Newtons are technically under no obligation to give financial records, but they did.  The NCAA investigates purely through volunteered information, thus it's in one's best interests to be as forth coming as possible if you're clean otherwise any false statements are what they have.

I respect that atltig.

They have already been implicated. Now it is being investigated by the NCAA and every major media outlet in the country.

You are looking at this as if the articles are court evidence. They are the smoke.  What has been said so far was just to get the NCAA involved and check thess stories out.

The NCAA doesn"t have to prove anything as fact.
They gather info and make a decision.

They don't need a bank statement to hang Newton and this program.

Sorry Iam going to belive a  unnamed employee of a university every time over a kid that thew a laptop out his window. With a cop standing right there. Then said what laptop?  So yes he is dumb enough to call a recruiter and make a comment like that.

So this is a conspiracy against Auburn?
Going on a limb here.  Are you a tiger fan?

He's not a starter, but here's a link showing he's a center on the team.

There is no Newton that plays for the Jaguars, but I have seen it written several times that Cam's brother plays for the Jags.  What would Cam Newton's brothers name be?

Flint:
we're just going to disagree, and if Auburn is never implicated in anything, yes they would have an 0-12, potentially 0-14 season, but if the school is guilty of nothing then I don't really see where you're going.  You're guilty of falling into the trap of volume rather than substance.  You follow the where there's smoke there's fire group, but perhaps you should look where the smoke seems to be hovering...Starkville.  Multiple stories that conflict and just don't make a whole lot of sense.  We'll find out some in due time, but we'll never know the whole truth.  So I support the plan to ignore your "advice" and play on.

Schools (not secc) do it all the time. Its not guilt. Its saying we don't know whats going on right now. And until we do. The player is sitting.  The NCAA takes this as a good will jesture when deciding penalties.

Is it reasonable to say that there could possibly be some major violations? Yes.

Would they look stupid for not staring him? Only to a Auburn fan that thinks these games are going to count. But not to most fans that realize this program needs to be thinking about its future.  Tigers your going to be 0-12 this season.

 Auburn is ignoring all signs.
 The NCAA takes that serious.
 And the tigers will pay.

ESPN may be paraphrasing the story as the Newton's admitted pay for play. But the have not and it is pathetic shoddy journalism for them to take a report that two recruiter(coaches) claim it was said and report to the nation that they admitted to saying it.  And for that matter CBS and anyone else who repeats their lie should clarify that point or they are no different than espn.

Nothing has been offered but innuendo and gossip. Thats it.  Auburn and Cam Newton have nothing to worry about.

Look, Auburn is screwed if the allegations are true, whether or not Newton plays any more this season.  They're also screwed if Newton doesn't play.  At this point, I don't think they've got much to lose by playing him and hoping against hope that it blows over.
