Death threats in the Big 12

Posted on: November 28, 2010 8:03 pm

This will probably get me a couple of death threats, but Dan Beebe was right in not going to Lincoln, Neb. on Friday.

In a story that may have been buried because of the big football weekend, the Big 12 commissioner said that he feared for his safety and that of other conference employees had they traveled to Nebraska to present the Big 12 North Division trophy. The commissioner is traditionally on hand, but not always, to present a trophy for division titles.

"I've been involved in major institutions and had some major feedback," said Beebe, a former NCAA enforcement officer, "Obviously, I've suspended players and coaches, fined coaches but I've never had the volume and degree of vile nasty messages. It's not just me, it's several on our staff. It's the most disgusting things that people would ever say to anybody."

Beebe estimated that 2,000 messages made it to the Big 12 office in the week leading up to Nebraska's 45-17 win Friday over Colorado. He was so concerned about some of the threats that Beebe said he didn't think it was proper to send even Ed Stewart, a former Nebraska player, who works in the Big 12 office.

"It's really pretty shameful," Beebe told in an interview over the weekend. "My wife and my family weren't too thrilled with me going up there. I reviewed it with folks that I've dealt with in security before. They said, 'Hey, this is not something you want to mess with until we figure it out more.' I didn't want to do anything to take away from the great accomplishment of the Nebraska players. It's not their fault."

Beebe was in Stillwater, Okla. Saturday night for the South Division showdown between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

The commissioner said some of the negative messages, which he termed "disparaging", were directed to his daughter's Facebook page. She is a college student.

I hope Nebraska doesn't have to be told, again, this is beyond reprehensible. The negative reaction from Nebraska toward the Big 12 seemed to intensify after linebacker Eric Martin was suspended following a helmet-to-helmet hit on an Oklahoma State player in late October. Beebe stressed that he believes the messages came from only a fraction of Husker Nation. There now seems to be a lunatic fringe out there who actually believe that the Big 12 has conspired against Nebraska in its last year in the conference before going to the Big Ten. When I linked to a Beebe story on Friday and posted on my Twitter account saying that it, "made my stomach turn," some of the reactions surprised me.

At that point, I began to understand what Beebe was feeling.

We can only hope this is a very small group of delusional radicals. Beebe balanced the tradition of handing out a piece of hardware against the possibility of being harmed by one of these crackpots. I know what I'd do. He said some Nebraskans have called to apologize for the crazoids but that they're "about a one-to-200 proportion."

Nebraska fans, some of the best in the country, are now earning a dark and sinister rep, fair or not. This is two weeks in a row they have made Big 12, and national, news. A lot of us criticized Bo Pelini after his outbursts in the Texas A&M. Pelini was sincere, apologized and moved on. He didn't let the episodes ruin a sterling coaching career.

But what has happened last week indicates a chronic problem. Let's hope that Nebraska doesn't leave the Big 12 with some sort of stain. You can already foresee an awkward moment next Saturday if Nebraska wins the final Big 12 trophy. Imagine Beebe presenting the trophy to Pelini with boos cascading down from the Cowboys Stadium stands.

"I don't have any reservations about giving them the trophy," Beebe told me. "If their kids win it, they deserve it. By that time we'll sort out if there are any kind of maniacs that we have to be aware of."

Nebraska doesn’t deserve this. It is going to a conference that is noble and full of class. To this point, its program has been noble and full of class.

Beebe was asked if all this has altered his opinion of Nebraska.

"I haven't had anything but great experiences with Nebraska fans and people of Nebraska," he said. "I also know this represents a very, very small portion of a fan base that's classy."

Let's hope that while it takes those Big Ten millions in the future, Nebraska also contributes to its new conference's tradition, in the right way.

Those who don't agree with me know how to reach me. And that scares me.

Death threats in the Big 12

It's amazing how every article that you write about Nebraska is negative.  Where did you go to college again?  Missouri?  What a joke you are.  Are you saying in other conferences that death threats aren't received?  Of course they are.  Beebe is a gutless wimp and you have no credibility.
If you need us, we'll be in Big 10 country.  You should know, it's the conference that Missouri begged to join only to get passed over by the Big Red. Have fun being the doormat of the new Big 12 minus 2.

Death threats in the Big 12

That's right, we're all psychopaths.   Nebraska fans have always been known for being evil.

So OBVIOUSLY this is a "chronic problem", as the brilliant Mr. Dodd states.

Do you think Beebe wanted ANYTHING to do with handing a trophy to Pelini?  Do you think Beebe might have just the tiniest bit of a reason to not like Nebraska, after we didn't cave to his pressure this summer, and instead bolted to the Big 10?

What better way to deflect pressure from himself and a very unstable conference, and instead point attention to one of the teams that is jumping off this sinking ship.

I don't doubt he got a few e-mails.  EVERY fan base has wackos.  What kind of "fan" mail do you think Rich Rodriguez is getting right now from Michigan fans?  What kind of "fan" mail do you think Mack Brown is getting from the wacko minority in his fan base?

But yet, the brilliant Mr. Dodd decides to make this the major story of the day?  When there were SO many great FOOTBALL stories this weekend?

Nice call, Dodd.

Death threats in the Big 12

2000 people qualifies as a few nuts?  They must teach a different kind of math at Nebraska.  This isn't something Dodd is making up on his own.  It is certainly newsworthy when the commissioner of a major conference doesn't go to a trophy presentation because he fears for his life.  You must have been one of the people who sent a threat if you think this type of behavior by this many fans is defensible or insignificant.

Death threats in the Big 12

I'm not surprised that some of the inbreed, extra chromosome havin, corn shuckin idiots would learn how to use the "internets" just to threaten somebody.  Do me a favor and quit watching football and stick to tea party events and w^cking off to sarah palin

Are you trying to be funny or are you really this stupid?

Death threats in the Big 12

the only reasons for this nonsense in the first place is because of HIS OWN actions (and inactions). people get death threats all the time (boise st's kicker is next) and 99% of the time it is just enraged fans saying harsh words with no intention to back them up.

maybe if the games did actually seem fair or his approach to suspending nebraska players (Martin) and not other players, specifically from Texas A&M for what looked to be sexual assault.  the same referee crew has worked all of nebraska's close games (Texas, ISU, A&M) and anyone watching the game could tell the general over penalization of nebraska and seeming bias towards the opponent.  What did that crew get for their mistakes? absolutely nothing.  even the announcers agreed with the ridiculous and questionable calls and it was plain to see that something HAS to be going on, and that this crew should not any place on a college football field.

beebe is a scared man that cant back up or justify any of his actions towards the University of Nebraska, so yeah fans will get very angry.

dodd, please quit writing these nonsense articles about how nebraska is always wrong about everything, from pelini being a very verbal coach to this.  there is no way that beebe is doing his job in a correct or fair way, and it's ridiculous that the ncaa has either not noticed or failed to take action

i can't wait for the big 10, because the big 12 will now be the southwest conference once again, and once everyone realizes that texas is ruining things for everyone else, they will wake up and do the same.

its going to be fun watching nebraska hoist the last ever big 12 championship trophy in the state of texas while beebe sits at home huddled in a corner because there are husker fans in town.

Death threats in the Big 12

It snot like the big 12 made you guys leave, you got greedy and wanted more money.  If you dont have the talent to hang with the big 12 south, then it's good that you are leaving.  I have heard whispers for awhile about the suckers nations feeling discrimnated against.  After the way pellini acted after they got beat by A&M (yeah they did get beat by A&M), I'm not surprised that some of the inbreed, extra chromosome havin, corn shuckin idiots would learn how to use the "internets" just to threaten somebody.  Do me a favor and quit watching football and stick to tea party events and w^cking off to sarah palin

Death threats in the Big 12

You guys can dismiss it all you want, but that doesn't change the fact that the entire Nebraska fan base is made up of psychopaths!!  :)

Death threats in the Big 12

I am a Nebraska Husker fan and I have been to numerous games. I have never had a bad experience with any Husker fan before, during or after the games. Just like in any other program there are fans that are radical and send stupid messages but they do NOT represent a majority of the Husker fans. Also the hit Martin had was not an intentional helmet to helmet. The player lowered his head and Martin tackled him. He was suspended but I watched the play and it was not malicious or intentional. I don't think Beebee would have been in any physical danger coming to Lincoln. He might have been booed but if he can't take that then he needs to find a new career because he is going to be the bad guy. As far as the death threats go, find out who sent them and go after them not Husker nation. Pretty sure with technology today they can figure out who sent them. It's no secret that the Big 12 is not happy about Nebraska leaving and last week's game was ridiculous. Really 16 penalties to 2? It was very frustrating to watch such horrible officiating. The Big 12 championship game with Oklahoma is going to be epic. These two teams have a great tradition of playing each other and I look forward to a great game. I will be cheering on the Huskers and hope that Beebee has to hand that Big 12 trophy to Pelini. He might get booed; oh well, such is life. You can't be liked by everyone. I for one and excited that we are leaving the Big 12 and getting away from Texas and going to the Big 10 which will benefit the entire University not just athletics. GO BIG RED!
