Death threats in the Big 12

This will probably get me a couple of death threats, but Dan Beebe was right in not going to Lincoln, Neb. on Friday.

In a story that may have been buried because of the big football weekend, the Big 12 commissioner said that he feared for his safety and that of other conference employees had they traveled to Nebraska to present the Big 12 North Division trophy. The commissioner is traditionally on hand, but not always, to present a trophy for division titles.

"I've been involved in major institutions and had some major feedback," said Beebe, a former NCAA enforcement officer, "Obviously, I've suspended players and coaches, fined coaches but I've never had the volume and degree of vile nasty messages. It's not just me, it's several on our staff. It's the most disgusting things that people would ever say to anybody."

Beebe estimated that 2,000 messages made it to the Big 12 office in the week leading up to Nebraska's 45-17 win Friday over Colorado. He was so concerned about some of the threats that Beebe said he didn't think it was proper to send even Ed Stewart, a former Nebraska player, who works in the Big 12 office.

"It's really pretty shameful," Beebe told CBSSports.com in an interview over the weekend. "My wife and my family weren't too thrilled with me going up there. I reviewed it with folks that I've dealt with in security before. They said, 'Hey, this is not something you want to mess with until we figure it out more.' I didn't want to do anything to take away from the great accomplishment of the Nebraska players. It's not their fault."

Beebe was in Stillwater, Okla. Saturday night for the South Division showdown between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

The commissioner said some of the negative messages, which he termed "disparaging", were directed to his daughter's Facebook page. She is a college student.

I hope Nebraska doesn't have to be told, again, this is beyond reprehensible. The negative reaction from Nebraska toward the Big 12 seemed to intensify after linebacker Eric Martin was suspended following a helmet-to-helmet hit on an Oklahoma State player in late October. Beebe stressed that he believes the messages came from only a fraction of Husker Nation. There now seems to be a lunatic fringe out there who actually believe that the Big 12 has conspired against Nebraska in its last year in the conference before going to the Big Ten. When I linked to a Beebe story on Friday and posted on my Twitter account saying that it, "made my stomach turn," some of the reactions surprised me.

At that point, I began to understand what Beebe was feeling.

We can only hope this is a very small group of delusional radicals. Beebe balanced the tradition of handing out a piece of hardware against the possibility of being harmed by one of these crackpots. I know what I'd do. He said some Nebraskans have called to apologize for the crazoids but that they're "about a one-to-200 proportion."

Nebraska fans, some of the best in the country, are now earning a dark and sinister rep, fair or not. This is two weeks in a row they have made Big 12, and national, news. A lot of us criticized Bo Pelini after his outbursts in the Texas A&M. Pelini was sincere, apologized and moved on. He didn't let the episodes ruin a sterling coaching career.

But what has happened last week indicates a chronic problem. Let's hope that Nebraska doesn't leave the Big 12 with some sort of stain. You can already foresee an awkward moment next Saturday if Nebraska wins the final Big 12 trophy. Imagine Beebe presenting the trophy to Pelini with boos cascading down from the Cowboys Stadium stands.

"I don't have any reservations about giving them the trophy," Beebe told me. "If their kids win it, they deserve it. By that time we'll sort out if there are any kind of maniacs that we have to be aware of."

Nebraska doesn’t deserve this. It is going to a conference that is noble and full of class. To this point, its program has been noble and full of class.

Beebe was asked if all this has altered his opinion of Nebraska.

"I haven't had anything but great experiences with Nebraska fans and people of Nebraska," he said. "I also know this represents a very, very small portion of a fan base that's classy."

Let's hope that while it takes those Big Ten millions in the future, Nebraska also contributes to its new conference's tradition, in the right way.

Those who don't agree with me know how to reach me. And that scares me.

You're just proving my point, dip$h!t. You Nebr@$$kans wouldn't know class from a hole in the ground.

Yes, now I can see how he missed all of that class oozing out of you.  Laughable.

Revan,

Comments like yours are irresponsible, make no sense, and add nothing to the conversation. It makes you appear to have an IQ of less than room temperature and very biased as well. If you ever stumble over an intelligent thought, go ahead and post that.

I clearly stated that my posts were made in jest and do not reflect my actual opinion about Nebraska and their fans.  If you missed that then perhaps you should look closer at my posts.  If you did see that and still feel like my comments were irresponsible then you are entitled your opinion and we will just have to agree to disagree.

Death threats in the Big 12

I wonder if Dodd did any investigating journalisim prior to writing the story? As for me, I am an Iowa fan and I grew up hating the Fuskers but it has been clear to me what has been going on in the Big 12 this year.
Dodd, did you check to see if the Commisioner had any previous airline reservations? Hotel reservations and if so when were they cancelled? I mean just some basic background to substantiate the commisioners intent to be in Lincoln? Were any of the so called death threats turned over to any law enforcement agency? If so, what is the status of that investigation? Did you speak with the security experts that were mentioned to get back ground as to why they recommended the commisioner stay away? To write a story and give it national credibility, I surely would hope you did your due dilligence! So Dodd, can you tell us if you did any of those fact checking things before writing the story?

Death threats in the Big 12

There are probably some stupid Husker fans that did write that crap or call in that crap.  Heck, I wrote some things I'm not proud of on message boards during the Texas A&M game, nothing that threatened anybody or was vulger, but things that I'm not proud of.  The people who write or say threatning messages towards any human being have some real issues and need help.  It's only a GAME.

That being said, this is just getting ridiculous now.  EVERY NEBRASKA FAN has now been ran through the mud since June, when we were thinking about leaving.  We were seen as the deserters, despite the fact that Texas admitted wanting to go to the Pac-10 BEFORE we were threatening of leaving.  When given an ultimatium we asked what the terms were.  Was Texas going to work on a Big XII network to rival the Big 10 Network, or were they going to be selfish, and go with a Texas Network.  They chose the latter, so Nebraska left the sinking ship BEFORE all the life boats were gone.  We get into August and some Nebraska Marketing people try to have some fun with a video, that said those awful words, "Beat Texas"  I didn't like the video, but it was all in good fun.  Now, the last month has been tough on NU football fans.  We go to Stillwater, and beat a good OSU team.  We get to enjoy it until Wed. when one of our players gets suspended for a vicious but legal hit.  Beebe says that he reviewed the tape, and decided a suspension was worthy.  The sad part is there was a hit in the OSU/KSU game every bit as vicious but not as legal as that hit, and NOTHING is done, presumeably because it drew a flag.  We then beat another very good team in Missouri, but have to worry about another legal, but vicious hit again.  We then get to go to Ames, with 2 injured QB's and an injured DB.  Our RB gets his head twisted every way, and a Nebraska player gets the flag for an action the ref should have been doing.  No review.  We win the game thanks to a poor pass.  We play a bad KU team, and the crowd and offense sleepwalk through a 17 point victory.  We then get the game in College Station.  The penalty disparity.  The poor sportsmanship by our coaches.  A program that everyone, and their mother has to appologize for the actions of the coaches, and fans.  We come back after a LONG week and pound a resurging Colorado team.  Everything's fine again.  Everyone's feeling good.  I didn't even realize there was a North trophy presentation suppose to happen.  Then we get reports Saturday night that Beebe was getting threatening messages from Nebraska fans, which is the reason he talked to the media.  It wasn't the penalty discrepency in the Texas A&M game, to calm Nebraska fears of a conspiracy.  It wasn't to report on Cotton getting molested under a pile, which he mentioned he saw nothing wrong with the TAM player's actions.  However, there is a youtube video that CLEARLY shows ILLEGAL activity going on under the pile by the TAM player.  It wasn't we want to congratulate the players and coaches for their hard work in winning the north.  It was these low-life no good every bad name you could think of fan base are the biggest jerks to set foot on the face of the earth, and EVERYONE of you fans should be ashamed of yourselves for rooting for such a team.

It's really getting petty now, and it MUST STOP on both sides.  Nebraska fans need to stop sending stupid messages to the Big XII office, and start showing the class we have displayed over the many years,  and Beebe needs to stop being so flippin stubborn and realize Nebraska is still part of this conference, whether he likes it or not, and act with class, and congratulate players and coaches for their accomplishments.

Us Nebraska fans should be proud of the coaches and players for the accomplishments they have acheived on the playing field.  But with the pettiness of fans and Beebe, it's getting that this season is becomming less and less enjoyable every single day.  We can't even look forward to the next game, because Beebe is calling us trash.

Death threats in the Big 12

I'm disgusted with the behavior of NU fans. But then again, given that this was NU fans we're talking about here, I'm not surprised. Husker fans are the most classless football fans on earth. They're even more classless than Missouri fans, and that's saying something. I hate the way they would descend on Lawrence every other year and act like they owned the town. I have absolutely no respect whatsoever for the University of Nebraska. I hate Nebraska so much that I used Husker apparel for a Halloween costume. I hope Nebraska gets thrashed by Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game, and I hope they get their worthless ass beat every time they take the field against a Big 10 school from now on.
