UF's Dan McCarney reportedly going to North Texas

North Texas is close to hiring Florida defensive line coach Dan McCarney according to this report.

McCarney is "99 percent sure" he is headed to North Texas according a source who spoke with the coach told CBSSports.com.

The 57-year old McCarney was head coach at Iowa State for 12 years from 1995-2006. He took the Cyclones to five bowl games, winning at least seven games in five of those seasons. In 2000 Iowa State finished 9-3, nearly upsetting Florida State that season.

After leaving Iowa State, McCarney spent one year as an assistant at South Florida before going to Florida as a d-line coach in 2008. His overall head coaching record is 56-85.

McCarney replaces Todd Dodge who was fired on Oct. 20. That leaves five openings in Division I-A -- Colorado, Minnesota, Miami, Indiana and Kent State.

McCarney is the eighth former Urban Meyer assistant to become a head coach. This would be the third straight season a Meyer assistant has left to become a head coach.

Charlie Strong, Florida  - Louisville
Dan Mullen, Florida  - Mississippi State
Doc Holliday, Florida  - Marshall
Kyle Whittingham, Utah  - Utah
Greg Brandon, Bowling Green  - Bowling Green
Mike Sanford, Utah  - UNLV
Tim Beckman, Bowling Green - Toledo

Blasphemy.  McCarney isn't from the Urban Meyer coaching tree.

McCarney was under Meyer for only a couple of seasons.  McCarney spent much more time under Coach Hayden Fry at Iowa.  The Hayden Fry coaching tree is not only larger, but far more successful than the Urban Meyer tree will ever be.

Glad to hear it the Mean Green are one of my favorite teams. Time for them to get some respect again. He should be able to build a team that is highly competitive in the Sun Belt conference and beyond.

Removing the CBS (SEC) spin, that means McCarney is the eighth former Urban Meyer assistant to recognize that Meyer has no discipline and decide to get the $%$& out of there...even if it means Little Sisters of the Poor University or North Texas.  Some people think this is a risk for North Texas because of McCarney's record at Iowa State, but it's a great move for McCarney.  Even if he fails miserably, Meyer will take him back.  Meyer takes EVERYBODY back, regardless of what they did.

Ball State

Despite what Stan Parrish did to Brady Hoke's work, Ball State is still a D1-A school.  There are six openings, not five.

With all these coaches at other programs can Meyer rebuild another Dynasty at FL? With Addazio at OC and coaches leaving the last 3 years it can be very tough.

I would tend to lean torwards NO.

First of all Meyer has been very fortunate on the recruiting trail with both UM and FSU struggling to compete, but FSU is on the rise and Miami will snag a big time coach, additionally USF is gaining ground.

Secondly we saw it with Stoops, Mack Brown and Pete Carroll, when you lose quality assistants to other teams, you must rebuild a staff and that is not always easy, especially when the departing coaches tend to take way GA and Interns, ask Les Miles what happened to his Defense when Bo Pelini left.

And lastly, his spread offense (which he is kind of the father of) is now being defended very well by several teams.  You have defensive Gurus who have begun to scheme around the spread and are shutting it down.  Just ask members of the Big 12 how the Pelini brothers have made it difficult to run up scores like they once did.

The big difference here is McCarney has already been a HC and was not successful at it, 59-85 is not the definition of success.  I wish him the best of luck but I dont think this this is a good move for N Texas, or Dan for that matter

The well is producing, might as well keep going there. Mississippi State has become a respectable team in two years and Louisville is going to a bowl when they were picked last in the Big East.
