Jon Embree? Really?

Colorado AD Mike Bohn seems to have buckled to pressure to hire a former CU player. The Denver Post is reporting that former coach Bill McCartney has said that Redskins tight end coach Jon Embree has been hired to replace Dan Hawkins. However, Bohn said the report is untrue.

There is a large faction of former CU players who supported Embree or former tailback Eric Bieniemy as the new coach. This is a potentially dangerous hire if it has happened. Embree has never been so much as a coordinator. He did spend a total of 10 years in two coaching stints overseeing tight ends at Colorado.

You'd think Bohn would have noticed to the last NFL tight ends coach hired for a BCS conference job. That would be one Tim Brewster who was hired from the nearby Denver Broncos.

Jon Embree? Really?

Well, and really, I would not be saying "Look how Gene Chizik turned out" yet. I would and have been saying "Look at his record at Iowa State." What's different is 1) he's at a school that attracts elite players, 2) he has Guz Malzahn and 3) he has Cam Newton. Two out of three of those things will change sooner than later and...well...Auburn was a 7-5 team in Chizik's first season and I think that's what they will be again without Malzahn and Newton.

I do agree about needing to be careful with NFL guys, even ones who have been NFL O or D coordinators or head coaches. It seems like they flop as college head coaches more than they don't. The more appropriate "Look at..." statements here WOULD be someone like Brewster, as well as Wannstedt and Weis. You could argue Saban and Petrino, but they are first and foremost college guys, not NFL ones.

Jon Embree? Really?

You don't actually refute his points with your suggestions.

Every coach you mention had at least two years experience as a head coach.

Embree doesn't even have coordinator experience.

One could argue that you have bolstered his case, not undermined it.

I think it's unfair to judge a hire before he's coached a game. I'm sure you were killing Auburn for hiring Gene Chizik too, how'd that turn out? What about Mike Sherman at A&M? No one liked that either.

Or, remember when USC hired Pete Carroll? I could go on for days.
