Florida coaching candidates (updated 12/9)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Welcome to Day 2 of the post-Urban Florida coaching search. This time it's for real. We think.

Florida AD Jeremy Foley says he'd like to have someone hired in 2-2 1/2 weeks. He also says he hasn't contacted any candidates. Of course, he hasn't. That's not the way searches work. Coaches who want to remain anonymous can keep on the down low by speaking to a third party. You can bet some influential Gators have been burning up the phone lines talking to candidates already -- probably some of these candidates.

Here's my list in descending order of probability...

Bobby Petrino, Arkansas:
You know Petrino would come. Moss is practically growing on him by now in Fayetteville. If he does leave, the Hogs cannot whine at all. You knew (or should have known) what you were getting into when you hired this guy.

It would be a good get for Foley, but for how long?

Kyle Whittingham, Utah:
Hire back-to-back Utah coaches? Why not? This is the perfect job at the perfect time for Whittingham. Meyer's former defensive coordinator with the Utes kept the momentum going after his boss left for Florida.

The biggest drawback: Whit is an accomplished head coach already headed to a BCS conference (Pac-12). He could take a bigger step going to the SEC. If they hired him, the Gators would play defense, I guarantee you that.

Dan Mullen, Mississippi State: This is almost too easy. Florida has to call him and Mullen has to accept to get out of StarkVegas after two seasons. Florida's offense hasn't been the same since the former Gators offensive coordinator left.

Here's what bothers me: Mullen isn't exactly known as an aggressive recruiter. His record in two seasons with the Bulldogs is still only 13-11. On the plus side: Steve Spurrier didn't enjoy recruiting either and he did all right. Mullen would unite the Gator Nation, although whoever gets hired is going to be the guy to follow the guy. Never a good thing in the coaching profession. You know what happened here the last time a coaching icon left.

Kevin Sumlin, Houston: Foley loves him.

Jon Gruden, NFL analyst:
This is getting tiring. Gruden's name will come up. It will gain momentum and he won't get the job. Unless they've absolutely fallen in love with him, ADs are wise to his act. Gruden wants to alert NFL GMs and owners that he is available. That's what the whole Miami thing was about.

Chip Kelly, Oregon: If his team wasn’t playing for the national championship I bet he'd more than listen. The timing, though, is a deal breaker. Kelly wouldn't leave until after the BCS title game (Jan. 10) and Florida sure wouldn't wait that long.

Bob Stoops, Oklahoma: There will be some sentiment for Spurrier's former defensive coordinator to come "home". Insiders know that Stoopsie is perfectly happy in Norman, loves his AD (Joe Castiglione) and can continue to compete for Big 12 and national championships each year. Sorry, Gators.

Chris Petersen, Boise State: As much as I like Pete, he wouldn't last three minutes in Florida's media fish bowl. There's a reason he hasn't left yet. Petersen is completely comfortable at a place where he can win forever.

Larry Fedora, Southern Miss: Could be dark horse candidate.

Will Muschamp, Texas defensive coordinator:
If this had happened a year ago -- wait a minute, it did -- Muschamp might have a better chance. Anyway, no matter where the fault lies Muschamp's star fell a little bit this season after Texas' horrid 2010. Muschamp, with an SEC pedigree, could be a fallback candidate if the search hits some snags.

Charlie Strong, Louisville: Florida's former D coordinator is a strong recruiter and great man. Florida needs a rock star. Charlie Strong is not a rock star.

Jim Harbaugh, Stanford: NFL first, Michigan second, Stanford third if neither of the first two open up. Florida isn't going to be option No. 4.

Steve Spurrier, South Carolina: Don't. Think. So.

Florida coaching candidates (updated 12/9)

Id appreciate you acknowledging the long term contract Petrino signed with Arkansas with an 18 million buy-out as well as a non-compete agreement for the entire SEC signed while the FL Job was still open.  You have taken several Petrino shots since he came to UA and now he signs an air tight contract with UA thru 2017 and not a peep from you.  Sad really.

Ok ya Nutt isn't such a good guy with going to an SEC West rival, but I don't think Petrino would be good for Florida.. He's already proven he's a backstabbing dirty coach.. Some of these guys that are listed are a total joke. Ya ok florida is in a low spot after establishing itself as one of the greats in recent years. Come on though some of these guys would be going backwards to take this job. Harbaugh, Kelly, Stoops, Spurrier? Why even put them on this list when there is no chance of these guys leaving their current jobs. Yes FL still gets the recruits, but Gainesville is a mess. You can tell there was an issue when Urban Meyer is playing a 3 quarterback offense. That's laughable.

I'm almost afraid to say I agree with some of this (although not all of it) I think you can forget about Petrino- the only ones in contention will be winners. Nobody is getting an offer on a 'maybe I'll win" With the big up coming changes in various conferences over the next 2 years FLorida isn't going to take a chance on the 'long term' plan. Mullin has a shot because of how he played against other SEC teams ( and winning the SEC is the yellow brick road to a possible National Chanmpionship). Sumlin will need to be loved, but he's going to get an interview. Strong has a better chance than you give him. So as long as you even metioned Spurrier(hahaha) you might as well list Paterno, after all he should be planning to move to FLORIDA soon anyhow

Quit acting like Bobby f#cking Petrino is a God.  Houston Nutt brought Arkansas out of the dumps and MADE them relevant again, kid.  That is a FACT.  Your program was sh)t until he took over and brought it back.  Yet, all you hog fans want to do is sh)t on him every second you get the chance and praise Bobby Petrino like he is the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Shows how much you know about Arkansas history. From 1963-1988 Arkansas had zero losing or .500 seasons. In 1992, Arkansas had to make the transition from the Southwest Conference to the SEC. Every Hog fan was confident we would "get back" with the right coach.

Houston Nutt was hired following a 4-7 season in 1997, and immediately promised a trip to a BCS game. In ten years, he never delivered. Arkansas was a solid 7 or 8 win team from 1998 to 2003, but playcalling turned sour in losing seasons in 2004 and 2005. Darren McFadden saved the program in 06, but after an 8-4 season in 2007 he resigned before he could be fired. It wasn't as much on the field as off the field...I don't want to go into detail about the Springdale Five, but if you still don't understand then I can. The Springdale Five is what put him on the hot seat and the text message scandal along some playcalling issues put fans over the top.

As for hating Nutt, no Arkansas fan did. He stepped down before we fired him, and everyone respected him. But then he went to Ole Miss, the nearest division rival. He immediately began working on stealing our recruits. Arkansas needed a coach quick, so the university called Petrino and asked him to come immediately, even though it would mean leaving the Falcons wtih 2 weeks left in the season. THAT is why Petrino left.

Most of the above was not reported on ESPN, whose biggest sponsor is Home Depot, whose CEO Arthur Blank also owns the Falcons, and ESPN has had a bias against Arkansas since 2008. Only now is it starting to wear off..

wdepancho1979,

Who is acting like Bobby Petrino is a god?  Bobby Petrino "brought Arkansas out of the dumps and made them relevant again".
Here is a fact.  The program was shit when NUTT took over, and 10 years later it was still shit.......by the way, if you are going to call people "kid" and "son" you surely won't mind if we call you "mother".

The Nutt years, what is there to say?  10 years of mediocrity.  His attitude toward bowl games was similar to a kid at Christmas.  Why prepare?  We get prizes anyway!  His resulting bowl record was 2-4.

Why would Arkansas fans try to sh(t on Houston Dale Nutt(case)?  He was a "ground game expert" coach!  His final year he had a veteran offensive line and three (does that need repeating) THREE future NFL stars at running back in 2006 and 2007!  120 of the 120 coaches in fbs could do as well as his record was with that offense.  I would imagine that 40 of them would have won their conference and at least 20 of them would have gone undefeated.

Listen, mother, Your comments make me seriously doubt that you have ever played the game, and even if you did, you certainly learned nothing from participating.  Football is a metaphor for life, you work hard, you do your best, you try to improve daily, you play to win, you dedicate yourself to the goals of the team.  The disservice that Nutt-case did the Razorbacks in the selfish interest of "a coach that bangs some poon on the side"   is just another chapter in his poor legacy.  He will cap that legacy with an even lesser performance at Ole Miss and then will fade into ignomy.

Mother, you take all the coaches you want/need that are given every benefit of the doubt, every opportunity, every possible advantage and do absolutely the least with the most.
I think the Razorbacks are fine with taking a coach that takes pride in demonstrating ability, acumen and responsibility within a program that doesn't have prima donnas that consider themselves to be above the law and choose to demonstrate that belief at the expense of their team.

This is one of the best comments EVER posted on this site. Incredible ignorance.

You say Bobby Petrino has no integrity. You would rather have a coach that had an affair with a local sportscaster, and exchanged 1,060 text messages with her over a couple months, including one just fifteen minutes before kickoff of the 2007 Capital One Bowl? Or a coach that never takes the blame for ANYTHING that goes wrong, but whose signature quote is "I called that play, Chuck! I called that play!" when things go right? Who was paid a $3 million buyout by the University of Arkansas and asked not to go to an SEC school or a state school, and instead goes straight to the nearest division rival, Ole Miss ?

As for on the field, Houston Nutt was at Arkansas for 10 years and never made a BCS game. Bobby Petrino has been here for 3 and look where we're going on January 4...

If my memory serves me right, that lower rung school did pretty well on big leagues homefield this year. I think they actually beat big league in their own back yard.
