Harbaugh fills one opening, creates another

Stanford might be the one that Chris Petersen takes.

I'm talking about the hotter-than-July Boise State coach who has been perfectly happy in his job. Now that Jim Harbaugh surprised absolutely no one by going to the 49ers, there is an interesting opening at an interesting place. Harbaugh proved that you can win big on The Farm, producing a season for the ages in 2010.

The prospects for 2011 are even better -- 17 returning starters including Andrew Luck, a likely top-five preseason ranking. Yes, I'm saying that the Cardinal can compete for the national championship.

With the right coach. Petersen might be that guy. The Boise coach's name comes up for literally every job opening. He has built a BCS-busting program that lately has added a shut-down defense to a usually explosive offense. He's also completely happy in Boise, a mini-Oregon that turns two-star players into superstars. Could "Pete" be pried loose by Stanford? It's on the West Coast. Harbaugh proved you could win there despite the academic restrictions. The media crush -- something that bothers Petersen -- wouldn't be much.

Petersen played and began his coaching career at nearby Cal-Davis (104 miles separate the two schools). He knows West Coast (particularly California) recruiting. He's a proven winner. Going to the Pac-12 would be a step up in competition but Petersen has proved he can compete in the BCS arena. Think about the prospect of coaching Luck.

If Petersen says no -- and Bob Bowlsby sure as hell better make him say no -- then the favorite seems to be Stanford assistant Greg Roman, a 37-year-old with 13 years of NFL experience.

Meanwhile, Michigan can now move on unencumbered by Harbaugh speculation. There was a Twitter report that Michigan had sent a plane to Baton Rouge on Friday. One problem. Les Miles is in Dallas for the Cotton Bowl. I'll stick by my original assertion that Miles has a monster team returning and is, for now, content. That could all change in one controversial Cotton Bowl tonight.

That leaves San Diego State's Brady Hoke. Excited, Michigan Men and Women?

Come on y'all. Stanford can't afford to pay Petersen any more than Boise. Have you compared housing costs between Palo Alto and Boise. Probably about 4x the cost to live in Cali. Les Miles to Michigan and Brady Hoke to Stanford makes  more sense. Hook em.

Not sure who goes to coach the Big House team.  I can't believe Hoke is a big enough name for them.  I don't see Les Miles leaving LSU - they have a great shot of winning the SEC West in 2011.

I think MI best bet is to take a look at Iowa's Ferentz, see if they can pry him loose.  He's a Big Ten (12) winner and with a better recuiting name like Michigan I think he could rest control from Tressel and OSU.

The problem with bringing someone in from outside the Big 10 is that OSU has become the 800 pound gorilla.  That's a problem for a new coach - recruiting in the midwest and PA/NJ.

We'll see what happens but Michigan needs to pull a rabbit out of the hat!

Who says Roman may not got to SF also, Miles will stay at LSU with all of the players leaving AL, Newton and Mallett going pro LSU should would win the SEC. Michigan has an empty cupboard no on in his right mind would go there right now unless he is a true blue Michigan man who cannot land another HC Job.

Dood is a joke. First it's that jerk Rodriguez going to Pitt. Wrong. Now's it's Peterson to Stanford?  What's next Ty Willingham is a good coach? Maybe the youtube video of Gundy hurt his recruiting, eh? Dodd, like Pete Prisco, Mike Freeman, Clark Judge and Wes Goldstein are simply clueless and do a disservice to sports and the web site.

Greg Roman gets the Stanford gig. Michigan? Hoke or Miles are possibilities. However, sometimes a dark horse emerges. You know Dodd has no idea who that could be. He never does.

What about Steve Mariucci for Michigan?  Haven't heard much talk about him, but it seems like he might be a darkhorse.

Michigann will get Hoke. He's not a bad choice and posssibly the best one for the university at this point. Michigan is,nt who thy think they are. Canidates are not beating the door down to come to what is developing into a very dysfunctional football program. The prodigal son would,nt come home. I believe Stanford could absolutely attract a bigger name at this point. The process of getting a coach to Michigan is looking just like the fiasco of last time. They will be settling again for their 3rd, 4th, choice and that does'nt play well nationally. The high school seniors have seen in their high school careers mighty Michigan fall to App St. and three years of complete chaos. It will be years to return this program to league prominence let alone national.

I for one would be happy with Hoke, remember Ohio State's hiring of Tressel seemed uninspired at the time.  Sometimes the low key guy is the right one for the job.  As for Miles, 8-4 next year at LSU gets him canned.  8-4 next year at UM gets him cannonized.  Don't be so sure he won't leave.

Personally, I'm still hoping Pat Fitzgerald is the choice.

not a chance this happens

Not a chance what happens?  Petersen to Stanford?  Les Miles to Michigan?  I think the odds on favorite to Stanford is indeed Pertersen, even though being a Cal grad might make him have to choke on it a bit.  Les Miles will probably wait for a move until next year or the following year, so the Michigan hunt is getting interesting.
