Pat Knight has been fired as coach at Texas Tech, the school just confirmed. Knight will coach through the Big 12 tournament this week.
The son of Bobby could not survive his second losing season in the last three years in Lubbock. Pat took over in 2007-08. His teams never made the NCAA tournament. His 2009-10 team went to the NIT quarterfinals. This season's team is 13-18 heading into Wednesday's first-round Big 12 tournament game against Missouri.
Pat succeeded his father in 2008. Bobby had gone 138-82 in six-plus seasons. He took the Red Raiders to four NCAA tournaments, the last in 2007.
Pat was almost the antithesis of his bullying father. He was humble, articulate and went out of his way to be expansive with reporters. Obviously, one of the names that will come up to replace him is former Texas A&M and Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie.
Pat's firing comes only a few days after Kirby Hocutt was hired as Texas Tech's new athletic director.

Pat Knight firedNever really thought Pat Knight would be that great anyways. Even if it is Bob Knight's son. I still think he can be a decent coach, at a job where the expectations aren't as high, in a smaller conference.

Pat Knight firedI guess he is no Joey Meyer or John Thompson III....Well hopefully daddy can get him a job at ESPN now!!!!Sure because the was no connection between JT3 getting the job at Georgetown and his dad coaching there. Pat will get anther gig somewhere and will be a fine ...usually stuff like this happens when a new AD comes in and a team is struggling |

Pat Knight firedWith his Father's connections, he'll get a another job. Obviously, he grew up in Indiana and would know the area.
Maybe it time for a Knight to return to Indiana in a place like Manchester College where Steve Alford got his start. Even though Alford struggled at Iowa, he's made a big splash at New Mexico going 76-26 through last season. Dane Fife, who also played for Bob Knight, is building Indiana University/Purdue University at Fort Wayne into a winning program. Maybe it's time for Pat to go home. |

Pat Knight firedIt's too bad that things didn't work out for Pat. I don't believe that his fault was how nice he is, becuase nice guys can coach too (Bill Snyder at KSU, Tom Osbourne at Nebraska, etc.). I hope he gets a job at a smaller school in an easier conference, because I think he could do quite well there.

Pat Knight firedFurther proof that, as Leo Durocher said, nice guys finish last. I hope he does get a job on TV; he'd have to be better than his bombastic, semi-addled father, whose usual comment is: "I would have done that better."
