Ray Small has to talk to the NCAA now doesn't he?

I don't mean in the legal, compelled sort of way. The association doesn't have that kind of power. But if the former Ohio State receiver is going to tell the student paper The Lantern that he sold his gear for extra benefits and "everyone was doing it", Small needs to sing to the NCAA.

Just for the sheer theater of it, if nothing else.

Small told the paper that he sold his memorabilia for cash because he, like other athletes, was struggling financially. He had four Big Ten rings. "There was enough to go around." He said there friendly car deals. He said Ohio State athletes, "don't even think about [NCAA] rules."

Tell us something we don't know to this point, Ray. And yet, in the middle of a scandal that threatens to take down coach Jim Tressel -- along with AD Gene Smith and president Gordon Gee -- hearing it from a new, recent Buckeye source makes it more compelling.

That's why Ray Small has to talk to the NCAA. In fact, Wednesday's story has the possibility of not meaning much unless Small does speak to the NCAA. The association can't make him talk with an enforcement officer because he is a former player. The NCAA doesn't have subpoena power. But if he doesn't, Small looks, well, small.

He can rat out his teammates and shoot his mouth off to the student paper but his words lose their punch unless Small has the stones to back it up in front of the NCAA. Without his cooperation, what he has alleged can be investigated by the NCAA and certainly puts Ohio State in a more negative light, but Small can skip a bunch of steps by calling enforcement director Julie Roe Lach right now.

If what he says it's true -- and it's detailed enough to make me believe -- then we now know there is a long history of cheating at Ohio State. I can hear some of you laughing out there: "Well, duh!" True, but the NCAA needs some kind of evidence to make a case. Or in this case, make a big case a blockbuster. Why stop at just Tressel hiding emails?

The NCAA already has plenty of evidence the Tressel case. In fact, there isn't much disputing of the facts. Tressel covered up. Tressel knowingly played ineligible athletes. You can't even say that about Reggie Bush and USC. He was rogue -- one guy -- and, unless something else emerges to the contrary, Pete Carroll didn't know. Small's comments suggest a widespread culture of cheating.

Well, duh
, indeed.

Even Gene Marsh, The Vest's mouthpiece, may have to admit that even with his misguided shot at "some dot-com writer somewhere."

(Dear Gene: Without those dot-com writers -- they're called legitimate media, by the way -- you would be sucking air for clients.)

Save the NCAA some work, Ray. If you're a man, the best way to use this information is to formalize it with a call to the NCAA. Here's the number if you need it: 317-917-6222.

Ray Small now has to talk to the NCAA

Ray Small may be entertaining CBS sports and other Tosu haters but he has just killed any chance of playing in any Professional football organization in the US and Canada.  Hey it's his future.

Ray Small now has to talk to the NCAA

I am an Ohio State fan and I understand the bashing by fans of other schools but, I really don't understand the importance put on anything that Ray Small says.
Now that Tressel has resigned, (yes, I think he should) why listen to something that a disgruntled former player has to say? He was suspended more than once when he was on the team and was not a team player then. So, why would you expect him to be any different now? Is the the most relevant former Buckeye that you can get to listen to??
I know that what happened at OSU is wrong. But, don't give any respect to someone who didn't respect the school that paid for his education. If you want to do some legitimate reporting, ask Small why he is talking about this now instead of months ago when it first came out. Do you think he is missing his last chance at fame???

Dodd considers himself legitimate that is some funny stuff. How this tool is paid for what he writes is mind boggling.

I swear, these OSU fans commenting here are some of the most meanspirited, delusional, messege-killing lunatics I've ever seen.

One poster suggested Dodd gargled semen.

Another poster said he was g@y.

Yet another suggested suicide.

I could see if this writer had made up this fiasco, Ray Small, or Tattgate. He didn't.

And then most of you OSU fans wonder why others HATE you and your school? I assure you, it is NOT jealousy that drives them, any more than it is objectivity that drives you. Reminds me of the SMU scandal, where the fans weren't mad at the school, but instead focused their anger on the media.

I suppose the new sport for OSU fans will be to continue to attack any and everything that is written about this mess, (along with anyone who writes it) and to continue to proclaim that it ss much 'ado about nothing,' while also screaming that there's nothing more to see here, even while it's an ONGOING issue.

Of course, this will all make for interesting reading after the NCAA rules, and they all have to pick up their faces from the floor. I guess that much-needed dose of reality will bite when the NCAA comes in and informs them that, yes, this IS a big deal, that they don't care who else does it, and that there WILL be major sanctions.

At that moment, maybe all that misdirected anger will find its proper place, at home, where it belongs.

I bet all those "Well, duhs" slide off your tongue as easily as you type them, don't they Dennis! But don't try to make yourself out to be legitimate media because you're not. There are some out there that don't take rumors & blow them up into big fat lies like you're so capable of doing. And don't even think that for a moment that most of us believe Pete Carroll was innocent in the Bush case. If he didn't know, he should have. It's not like he & his staff have to keep an eye out for thousands & thousands of kids like dealing with a whole campus would be. They had to watch maybe 100 or so. But I do agree that Ray Small just gave me a new version of what 'dumber & dumberest' would look like. [Yes! I know I wrote dumberest Foot in mouth---it's slang!] Since when did tattoos & probably a bunch of "bling-bling" becomes necessities to survival while going to college? Cash, yes! But tattoos, No! One of these days they should create a class that at least halfway teaches Common Sense [101] & make it mandatory for incoming athletic recruits everywhere, because YES, it is going on EVERYWHERE. Embarassed And that is sad!Cry

Ray Small now has to talk to the NCAA

FYI bolosak--Your coach lied to the NCAA, but many from tOSU keep talking about players selling their own goods.  There is not a single statement that is even close to the truth.  USC was not paying their players, an agent wannabe gave money and goods to Bush's parents.  Can you even admit that your coach lied; not only to the NCAA but to the administration at the school.  Gee and Smith may be OK with being lied to by their coach, but the NCAA is not.  Keep your head buried, that way you can continue to play dumb with this issue.  I trust it is an act anyway.

Avatar wager that OSU doesn't get hammered even CLOSE to as hard as USC? Two COMPLETELY different things. USC was paying players, OSU players traded their own things for cash and tatoos. LMAO...stil...

I don't think this adds much to the conversation as there already appears to be plenty of dirt on OSU to punish them at least as hard as USC.  Some OSU fans may not like it, but their anger is misguided.  My guess is this is the end for the gold pants, and probably the rings until after graduation for the players.  The fact that these items mean so little to them and only causes trouble for the program, they have to go.
