University of Arizona Robert Shelton is expected to be named the new executive director of the Fiesta Bowl, bowl sources told Monday evening.

Pending the signing of documents to finalize the agreement, Shelton would replace John Junker who was fired amid scandal in March. Shelton is a native of Phoenix and a member of the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee. Shelton has been Arizona's president since July 1, 2006.

Earlier, the Fiesta approached Pac-12 deputy commissioner Kevin Weiberg, thought to be the frontrunner for the job. Weiberg told last month that he was not interested in the position.

Fiesta Bowl close to having executive director

He just sent the memo to the University Community.  This is stunning news.  We enjoyed his tenure and all the work he has done to advance our academic programs.  We have no idea where ABOR wants to take UA.
