Wisconsin just became the Big Ten favorite

Wisconsin just became the Big Ten favorite because of the biggest free-agent acquisition, maybe, in history. In the history of college football, that is. Sorry, Jeremiah Masoli.

When quarterback Russell Wilson picked Wisconsin on Monday, the Badgers took control of the new, expanded Big Ten because, well, to this point no one else has.

--Ohio State, you might have heard, is dealing with a few problems.

--No one is really sure about the Nebraska offense.

--I want to believe in Michigan State but until the Spartans do it -- go to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1988 -- they are suspect.

With the addition of Wilson, Wisconsin is now, officially, loaded. He gives the Badgers something that they have lacked for years -- a playmaker at quarterback. I know, I know, Scott Tolzien wasn't bad, but he's also gone.

Without him, Bret Bielema faced a familiar problem -- game-planning around the quarterback. Now he goes into games calling plays because of the quarterback.

Let's not stop there. With Wilson, the Badgers could compete for the national championship if everything falls right. Sure, the Badgers lost an Outland Trophy winner in the offensive line (Gabe Carimi) and J.J. Watt in the defensive line, but if there are two things Madison is good at they are beer and linemen.

The schedule is more than manageable. The Nebraska game is at home.

Am I gushing? I can't help it. One of my lasting visions from the 2010 season was Wisconsin pounding TCU's defense in the fourth quarter of the Rose Bowl. Now, add an accurate arm and fast feet to that scene. Give the Frogs credit for bouncing back, but this is going to be a different Badgers' offense with Wilson. I also remember last year at this time when Wilson went 250 days without football-related activity before the 2010 season. It didn't seem to hurt the Pack who won nine games for the first time since 2002.

Wisconsin gets a smart, polished quarterback who once threw 379 attempts without an interception. Perhaps most impressive: Wilson's 3,563 passing yards and 28 touchdowns not only led the ACC, it would have led the Big Ten.

If the kid truly wants to concentrate on football now -- which seems to be the case -- then he's at the right place with Wisconsin's pro-styleish offense. If nothing else happens, Wisconsin will have the deadliest play-action passing game in the country.

This is not Masoli II. Wilson will make a massive impact because he will be asked to do less in Wisconsin's offense. He is not a Cam Newton-like runner (who is?) but Wilson has enough mobility to make defenses account for him. Auburn never would have worked for Wilson because he plays too much like Newton.

No matter what he'd done, it would have been compared to a Heisman Trophy winner. Plus, the best he could have done is tie last year's accomplishments -- an undefeated national title season. That wasn't going to happen with or without Wilson.

I had to chuckle at Bielema's official statement. Wilson will "compete" for the starting quarterback position. You don't transfer -- and Wisconsin doesn't accept you -- if a quarterback controversy is about to break out.

The only thing that stops Wilson from becoming the Badgers' quarterback is a late hit from one of his teammates. So far, he's been pretty good at dodging those in live action. I like his chances of staying healthy and leading the Big Ten (ahem, 12) to its second straight Rose Bowl. At least.

Dennis did you watch the Rose Bowl? TCU bounced back? The Frogs led almost the entire game. Getting over yourself and admit TCU beat the big bad Big 10 team.

"Yea the SEC and the NCAA are the best cover up team since OJ and Johnny Cochran. So much corruption in that conference and you guys don't deserve half of your national titles. The NCAA just gives them to you. Try earning them like ohio state in 2002. Seriously you guys don't deserve to play this game after all of the prestige you've taken away from it. And this is coming from a buckeye. Yeah the SEC is ten times more corrupt than the OSU or USC's the reason they don't get caught is because the ncaa helps them out. Great teamwork. Tebow only won the heisman because the voting was fixed same with newton. Neither one deserved it. Florida wasn't the best team in the nation in 2007 and neither was lsu the best in 2008. OSU was the best both years the ncaa just screwed us by once again seeing a chance to give the SEC a homecourt advantage with LSU in the Sugar bowl. Gimme a break best conference my ass. The only title you guys deserve is the 2010 Alabama title. Everything else is a giant coo with the ncaa giving you it all."

To this asinine statement I say this:

"So much corruption" in the SEC, this coming from a buckeye fan with an OSU icon on the web, really?? Great argument their cheif. The NCAA doesnt hand out 5 national championships in a row to any conference. And by the way, the site of the BCS bowl is determined years in advance. Dont cry because LSU beat the crap out of OSU in 2007 in NOLA, that would have happend anywhere, bet!

Do you not remember how slow the buckeyes looked against Florida in the National Championship in 06. In any given year of late, 5 or 6 teams from the SEC would have beat OSU in bowls or anything else. Why dont you stop crying and start looking at the facts. The SEC conference has put 35% more players in the NFL the last 10 years than any other conference, its not "sabotage", its called talent, something that all of the football world will soon realize that T. Pain Prior does not have.

Point being this: Florida didn't deserve the title game in 2007, they weren't the second best in the nation, and in 2008 Lsu jumped six spots the last week when no one in front of them lost. hmmmm sounds a little sketchy to me. Oh and so many calls going floridas way and an ineligible player in 2009 should have taken wins away from them. Alabama was legit. And auburn had the whole SCam cover up. Face it your conference is the most corrupt thing in college football. People even say it OSU has to face consequenses because they're not in the sec and therefor can't pay off the ncaa. Dude when you stop being a biased SEC homer let me know then i'll listen.

They should change this rule.  You get a scholarship to play for one school, and you should stay there.  The NCAA has so many ignorant rules to prevent students from playing....I think it's hypocritical to have an ignorant one that allows someone to play.  BTW....they finished 3rd, 5th, and tied for second in the mighty ACC with this guy, and won a bowl game in the arm and hammer baking soda bowl against West Virginia...yeah, this guy will make a huge difference.  Calm down National Enquirer of sports (aka...CBS, Fox, Espn)  Go chase Oregon and UNC if you're looking for stories.

Um, no. The Badgers were a concensus pick to finish 5th or 6th out of 11 in the Big10 last year. They exceeded expectations big-time. They were a top 10 ranked team towards the end of the season, and top 5 going into their bowl game as the underdog. Had they pulled out that game (it was very close), they likely would have finished at #3 in the country. TCU played better for the full 60 minutes, and Wisconsin's storming comeback ran out of time. Badger fans do not think the team underachieved last season. They blew away most of our expectations.
No they weren't. Wisconsin was picked to finish 2nd or 3rd in the Big 10. They did overachieve, but it wasn't like them going to Rose Bowl was a complete shocker.

....in proclaiming Wisconsin as the favorits following this transfer. If I remember right, Nebraska had a sure fire gunslinger tranferring from ASU for the 2007 season and Nebraska was instantly proclaimed as Big XII favorites. Sam Keller ended up leading Nebraska to a 4-5 start before getting hurt, Bill Callahan was fired, and Keller decided his only hope was to sue EA Sports for using his likeness.

Comparing Keller to Wilson is laughable. Keller didn't have 1/3rd the career of Wilson in his 3 years at ASU. Keller isn't the same type of person Wilson is. Keller lead a "rockstar" life as QB at ASU. He took full advantage of financial good times Scottsdale enjoyed pre crash and was a regular at a number of Old Town clubs (suede, pcl, etc.). He partied HARD while Wilson is well known for being a class act, and an extremely talented person.

Wilson has the ncaa division 1 record for passing percentage, just because last year he dropped his percentage doesnt mean hes not accurate. Just ask every acc team that had to game plan because of him!

He graduated in 3 years at NC State, so he still has a year of eligibility left. Since he already graduated he doesn't have to sit out a year, he can play this fall. Please don't show your ignorance by posting comments on this site again, thank you.
