Will Lyles drops a big, ol' dime on Oregon

It turns out Oregon was that dumb.

It did get in bed with a talent scout to lure tailback Lache Seastrunk to Oregon if you draw the thinnest of conclusions from Friday's Yahoo! Sports story. It turns out that talent scout/mentor/third party/opportunist Will Lyles did essentially Photoshop a national recruiting package together follow Yahoo! Sports' initial report.

I didn't think Oregon could be so dumb. I was wrong.

The report details what is clearly a close relationship between Oregon and Lyles. The story says relationship with Chip Kelly goes back to 2007. The NCAA won't even have to try hard to classify Lyles as a representative of the university's athletic interests. In other words, a booster.

The tragedy of it is, Oregon and Kelly didn't have to do any of this. The program had the support of Nike behind it. Kelly himself is a heck of a coach and a tireless recruiter, although even that label must now be in question.

This isn't a case of the media fireflies being drawn to an upstart championship contender. The likes of Kelly, Jim Tressel and Bruce Pearl are making it too easy for us. They're sloppy and arrogant in their alleged wrongdoing. Think about how simpler life would be for Tressel if he had merely walked down the hall to his athletic director with those emails. Pearl would still be coaching if he told the truth. Kelly didn't need Seastrunk that badly. So far, the kid hasn't panned out.

Instead, he allegedly funneled tens of thousands of dollars to a shady character with a relationship to a recruit. My God, it's Texas football. There's plenty to go around for everyone. Was Seastrunk worth it? We know now the answer is no.

Fallout? According to the story, the NCAA has already been in to talk to Lyles. But Lyles said they didn't ask specific questions that Yahoo! Sports did (go figure). You can bet they'll be back in wanting to see Lyles' emails and phone records too. Why wouldn't he cooperate? Lyles has the morals of a slug anyway. It looks to me that the only reason he rolled on Oregon was that they weren't going to pay him again.

Be very concerned Duck Nation. Oregon is in line for major penalties, the kind that burn a program to the ground. USC-like. Kelly's job could be in jeopardy. This is not USC looking the other way while Reggie Bush took money, this is a willful attempt to gain a recruiting and competitive advantage.

Can anyone win big without cheating? The question remains unanswered.

Where's all the outrage?  I still don't understand the double-standard applied to Jim Tressel.  He was unjustifiably crucified.

Oregon and Kelly have covered up nothing and havent been found guilty of anything

Jim got everything he deserved. You're obviously a JT and osu apologist, and you're not very bright if you actually believe the above.

Oregon didn't go Auburn and pay a player to come to their school.
Oregon didn't go Ohio St. and allow players to get away with murder and then try and cover it up.

Auburn paid someone to come to their school?  Really? How did I miss that story?  I've seen many comments and accusations on these blogs and lots of speculation, but I missed the story actually saying Auburn paid anyone.  Show me the green.

Just sounds like another sour grapes Florida fan, like Florida has room to talk.

Auburn is "rebuilding" but they should still be able to beat Florida this year.

wheter this is worst than Ohio or not, does not matter.

If you have a school give you 25,000 dollars of course you are going to tell them to go to that school. You aren't going to say "check all your options". Because if the recruits start coming in, then you are setting your set up for more paydays. The school doesn't need to say anything, just make sure the check doesn't bounce, that its all, and then you can read between the lines.

One of the best backs in Texas and Heisman candidate to Drearyville???  LMJ was ranked as a three star player and his best other offers were from TCU and Nebraska.   No one was suspicous of another three star running back coming to Oregon.  Considering how many of its previous running backs had very successful Pac-10 careers, it wasn't a surprise at all.

Lyles "did it on his own"?  That is laughable.  Lyles "did it" because he smelled money coming his way, and Kelly obliged.  There is no other way to read that evidence reasonably.  And there is no other way to read the UO staff's panicked calls to Lyle to come up with a "package" right away, well AFTER payment, than that they had known at the time they made that payment that they were not buying legitimate "scouting services", but influence.  And that purchase (and the promise of a similar payment to be made the following season) paid off, as Lyles later bent over backwards to get Seastrunk's mother out of the letter of intent loop, so that he could sign with Oregon.

This stinks.  And the stench is all over Kelly and his staff.  If the Ducks don't wise up soon, the hammer will only hit harder.

Objectively, this is not as bad as Ohio St. nor Auburn.

Chip Kelly (according to Lyles) never asked him to push players toward Oregon.  He didn't request favoritism or say "You send me recruits and you'll get a pay day".  Lyles pushed recruits there on his own.

Oregon didn't go Auburn and pay a player to come to their school.
Oregon didn't go Ohio St. and allow players to get away with murder and then try and cover it up.

Chip Kelly rewarded Lyles for something he did on his own.

So on the scale of badness they aren't as bad as Ohio St. or Auburn (or Southern Cal).

if any of you dont think this comment is the absolute truth your all idiots......but everyone needs to make themselves feel better bagging on someone elses school
