Big 12's Four Little Piggies should find shelter

DALLAS -- You'd think they would have learned by now, the Big 12's Four Little Piggies.

Excuse the analogy regarding what are really Tigers, Jayhawks, Wildcats and Cyclones, but the conference's North Division leftovers would -- like the nursery rhyme Three Little Piggies -- be wise to look for sturdier homes.

That lesson was driven home last summer when conference realignment came up on Iowa State, Missouri, Kansas and Kansas State and smacked them over the head with a lead pipe. Surprise didn't even begin to describe it when the league started falling apart.

Few knew that Nebraska had secretly begun talking to the Big Ten in January 2010. Texas was going to do what Texas was going to do. The Pac-10 came along and almost conducted a daring raid.

The 4LP came this close to being homeless. The four would have found a home somewhere but that's the point. Better to go house-shopping on your own rather than waiting until a hurricane ruins the neighborhood.

Four schools that had been joined together for parts of a century suddenly would have been scattered.

Missouri: It went from thinking rather foolishly that it was Big Ten bound (it wasn't) to being nowhere but the Big 12 when Nebraska left.

Kansas: The seriousness of conference realignment hit home when a school with a top-five basketball program would have been looking for a home.

Kansas State-Iowa State: Total wild cards. Their markets (small) wouldn't have taken them anywhere specific.

Most likely the four would have ended up in some combination of the Big East and/or Mountain West. Perhaps Conference USA would have been involved trying to make itself into a BCS-worthy league. The Big East was considering inviting all four Piggies if the Big 12 split according to sources.

The lesson to be learned as conference upheaval once again strikes the Big 12 is for the Four Little Piggies to be proactive. If their administrators aren't maintaining back-channel communications with other leagues then they are foolish. However, the reaction of Jamie Pollard seems typical.

"We're married, I'm married," Iowa State's AD said. "I'm not going to be talking to someone else I’m going to be married to."

The Big 12 was a contentious union for its first 15 years. Thirteen months later, here we are again with Texas A&M upset with Texas' launching of The Longhorn Network.

"That issue [with Texas A&M] has been around that institution for a long time," said Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe. "Thankfully, the coaches and administrators and others are adamant about being in the Big 12."

Beebe has long preached the dangers of a school moving out of its natural "geographic proximity." For what is believed to be the first time on Tuesday, he basically tipped his hat and wished Colorado good luck for getting closer to its fan base.

"When you remove your institution from your orientation, your rivalries, I think it's really going to be problematic ...," Beebe said. "Colorado went to its orientation because they had 50,000 more alums that were located in the Pac-10 footprint than the Big 12 foot print."

Big 12's Four Little Piggies should find shelter

I think you should check KU's Big 12 and national record for last year in every sport.

Big 12's Four Little Piggies should find shelter

Come on over four little piggies.  The BE would be happy to have you and TCU form the backbone of a western division. By the way, once the new TV deal is cut you'll be making more money than anyone in the Big 12 and ACC anyway. And besides Jayhawks, you'll just get to play in the best conference in college basketball as a side benefit.

So Much could happen.

I think Missouri and Kansas will be in the Big Ten, Kansas State in MWC, Iowa State in Conference USA (They will win the league like every year and wonder were the respect will be when they go to Timbuktu Bowl when their 13-0.

I could also see Missouri going to the SEC with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M.  Kansas, Kansas State, Texas Tech to the MWC. Baylor and Iowa State to Conference USA,

Texas will beindependant by 2015 that is like 100% right now. serious dont be dumb look at how they are, alignating themselves with EVERYONE.

I think the 10 Team Big Twelve will be ok.  It is weird to think of any other Big Twelve members in any other league, save one Missouri, Should have been in big ten.

Big 12's Four Little Piggies should find shelter

Wihtin 5 years there will no longer be the Big Texas (c) league due to UT's selfishness. The 4LP will be blown to the winds of Mountian West, WAC and Sun Belt. The Conference Formerly Known as the Big 12 should have gone after the logical choice of TCU.

How in the world can you say Mizzou does not belong in a BCS conference.  40 wins in 4 years.  2-1 against the South last year and the one game if they lost if had played well for 5 minutes they would have beaten tech.  Actually in the last few years they've owned A&M and Tech.  The only teams they haven't competed well with the last 8 years are Texas and Oklahoma but what are A&M's, OSU, Nebraska's and Tech's record against those two schools.  Not much better.  We have a top 20 recruiting class.  We are not a BCS title contender at this point but to say we don't belong in a BCS conference is a joke.  I can think of easily 50 schools in BCS conference worse than Mizzou.

The Kansas Jayhawks will be hamstung by Kansas State.

There is no way the state of Kansas is going to allow us to go anywhere unless we take our ignorant, in-bred stepbrother (Kansas State) with us.  Any power conference that would be interested in having a top-flight basketball program as well as a successful, but rebuilding football program with the most loyal and greatest fanbase in college athletics, will be scared off when they realize that any invitation to The Kansas Jayhawks will have to include KState as well.

This is what happened in the mid-90s when the Big 8 rescued the former Southwest Conference from complete ruin.  An invitation was extended to Texas, Texas Tech and Texas A&M, but Texas Governor Ann Richards wouldn't allow them to join unless we took her alma matre, Baylor.

Dennis, I suggest you do a little homework on the new NCAA conference continuity rule adopted in January of this year, a.k.a. the rule change that saved the WAC. The old 5-6-7 requirement (to retain its basketball autobid, a conference must have at least 7 members, of which at least 6 must have been in the conference together for at least 5 years) was eliminated. Now all a conference has to do to retain its recognition as an NCAA Division 1 autobid conference is keep its membership count at 7 or more Division 1 schools -- with no limitation on member turnover -- and sponsor a sufficient number of sports and athletic contests. So if the 4LPs were left behind in the Big 12, they could just rebuild the conference by raiding CUSA and the MWC. They would be able to do so easily because of their BCS AQ status, which would remain intact under current BCS rules. They could probably steal TCU from the Big East too, and BYU would jump at the chance to join. So the Big 12 would continue on and the 4LPs wouldn't need to find a new home.

Dodd, what you and most media fail to say and or realize is what comes after.  Last year if the Pac 10 had taken 6 teams that would have forced the hand of the Big Ten and SEC. They are not going to be left behind. When that happened Mizzou and the other school, most likely ku would have found homes in the Big 10 or SEC. TA&M probably would not have gone to the Pac 10/12 anyway.

I know you are not a fan of schools that are not traditional powers but you need a reality check when you make these kinds of statements.

They should join the closest directional school conference.  Other than Kansas basketball, none of them belong in a BCS conference anyway.
