Wave bye-bye to Aggies; All in for SEC

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Consider the Aggies departed to the SEC.

Texas A&M president R. Bowden Loftin told CBSSports.com Saturday he expects the Aggies to be in the SEC "shortly".  After joining a Big12 presidents' conference call this week, Loftin said the Big 12 is committed to going forward "without us."

"I think the legal issues are basically gone," said Loftin speaking at halftime of the Oklahoma State-A&M game.

He was referring to four Big 12 schools that retained their rights to possibly sue the SEC if A&M leaves.  Baylor had been heading up that effort since early September when former commissioner Dan Beebe wrote SEC commissioner Mike Slive that all hurdles had been cleared for A&M to join the SEC.

A&M could be playing its first game as an SEC member (actual membership begins July 1) next Saturday against Arkansas in Arlington, Texas.

"Look at what’s happened this past week," Loftin said. "The action on Tuesday night by the Pac-12 has led to the Big 12, minus us, being in place. I joined the teleconference on Thursday evening of the Big 12 directors. They were firmly committed to going forward without us with nine teams."

CBSSports.com reported earlier Saturday that Texas A&M officials considered the SEC membership to be resolved quickly. Loftin was asked directly if he expects A&M to be in the SEC by next Saturday.

"I expect to be in the SEC soon," he said.

Loftin said he would listen to a plea from interim commissioner Chuck Neinas to keep the Aggies in the Big 12, but didn't sound hopeful.

“He’s an icon in our world, you know that," Loftin said "I’d be willing to talk to Chuck anytime he wants to be talk to me. But we’ve made a very firm decision about our future here and we’re going to stick with it. What more can I say?"

On Friday, Neinas said he would try to contact A&M but considered them gone to the SEC. He also said he expects Missouri to stay in the Big 12.

Loftin spoke exclusively to CBSSports.com and the Dallas Morning News.

A&M has coveted being in the SEC for over 20 years now.  There was talk in the 80's of them (and possibly UH) going to the SEC.  I believe it was blocked by State Legislature, so the SEC instead picked up South Carolina and one other school.

For what it's worth, I also really miss the Southwest Conference.  RIP

OU over-played their hand last week threatening to jump to the Pac-12.  Bebee and DeLoss both knew that the Pac-12 wouldn't take the OK schools without UT.  As a matter of fact, Bebee got in trouble with OU because he had a conference call with every BIG XII school except UT and OU and advised them to "work on Texas".  Oh, uh.  I was happy to see the conference vote to split their Tier 1 and Tier 2 media rights equally in a good faith effort to create stability.

Last week, DeLoss basically informed Larry Scott of the Pac-12 that UT's 3rd Tier media rights (Longhorn Network) were "off the table".  It's been reported that Scott was "appalled by UT's arrogance".  Why should DeLoss, Powers and UT share proceeds from a channel that they worked very hard to secure?  LHN was years in the making.  We're sorry if it doesn't conform to the Pac-12's media plan.

The reality is every school in the BIG XII has the same opportunity.  I read that OU and OSU had been working on a deal with OK's Cox Cable.  Great!  I hope they're able to make it happen.  Mizzou is supposed to be one of the better broadcast journalism schools in the country.  Why aren't they working on a deal?

In time, we may look at DeLoss and ESPN as visionaries for creating a new way to market a university to the public.

your not kidding gator863.....Im a true Ag....but we should have done what OU did...said we were leaving then wait for texas to freak out a bit instead of running our mouths first...we could have done just like OU and gotten our way just like OU...what did OU want?? Beebe to leave and new limits on the LHN...look everyone more people watched the Crossfit Championships last week than the LHN all year...its not going to last...A&M please stay even though I know you won't....we could get lucky and become an SEC power....but with our luck yeah right...money money money all the way around the table no matter who you are or what school you represent its ALWAYS about money...miss the old SWC days when the state of Texas is really all we cared about...

whats not being reported here is that tamu president Loftin said A&M made the decision ONE AND HALF YEARS AGO to leave the big 12 and head to the SEC.  This was before the LHN was even made public and before Nebraska and Colorado had left the Big 12.  It appears that the aggies were hell bent on leaving anyway, regardless of what would have taken place, so let them SECede their azzes over there.

As for the Texas/Tamu rivarly in football, Loftin is the one who will be repsonsible for that series ending, if it does, since he has been tap dancing and fiddling with those banjo players and moonshine drinkers down in the sec....furthermore, why would tamu want to continue a football, basketball baseball or any other athletic event with a school that they depise so much in Texas?

in the words of the big fat drugsters rush LIMPbaugh, I hope you(tamu) fail....enjoy your 6-6 records in the sec...

btw a&m fan....when was the last time an SEC or a big 12 team lost a 17 point halftime lead at home, like you fools did to Okie state yesterday?   sorry mofos

@texastexastexas

It means UT has no interest in helping A&M raise their profile in Texas.  Y'all basically turned your backs on the BIG XII, a 100-year old rivalry with UT and your sacred "honor code" by leaving for the SEC.  It certainly isn't because The University is scared of the competition. LOL...

You don't read the papers do you?  I don't expect the UT vs A&M series to happen again while DeLoss is our AD.  Y'all pissed him off something fierce.  So, good luck in the SEC.  Hopefully, y'all will enjoy the same success in the 2nd Tier sports.  Ain't gonna happen in football.

Lastly, we'll see who "sucks" on Thanksgiving Day because the Aggies certainly did yesterday.

Hook 'em!

Wave bye-bye to Aggies; All in for SEC

I will be attending a game in College Station this October, I cant wait. I doubt highly that it will measure up to what I experienced when I was in Austin...A&M, WHAT A BUNCH OF BABIES!!! WWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, The Univ. of Texas has a Longhorn Network, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, let's go to another conference......5-7/6-6/7-5, good luck chumps!
How many teams in the SEC, PAC12, ACC, Big Ten have their own television network? I don't think any other major conference would allow a team to do what  Texas has done. Do you seriously think that Oklahoma is happy about the situation? Why do you think Nebraska left? University of Texas seems to think that they are God's gift to college football.
