UNM's Locksley first casualty of the season

New Mexico coach Mike Locksley has become the first coaching casualty of the season. The Lobos' third-year coach was fired Sunday, a source told The firing comes less than a day after a youth was arrested for DWI while driving what was reportedly a car registered to Locksley.

Locksley was 2-26 in less than 2 1/2 seasons, his latest loss coming in overtime Saturday to FCS Sam Houston State. When AD Paul Krebs hired him in December 2008, Locksley was a hot coaching prospect having helped lead Illinois to the Rose Bowl. Locksley was known as an ace recruiter. Prior to his first season, he went to directly to a familiar area attempting to stock the New Mexico roster -- Washington, D.C.

In 2007, D.C. native Arrelious Benn was the Big Ten freshman of the year for Illinois. Benn was among at least nine players Locksley landed from the D.C. area from 2005-2008.

Things quickly went South in Albuquerque. Before his first season, Locksley was hit with a sex and age discrimination lawsuit by an administrative assistant. In September 2009, he was reprimanded after an altercation with an assistant. Locksley was suspended for 10 days.

On Saturday, recruit Joshua Butts was arrested for aggravated DWI, a minor in possession of alcohol and driving without a license.New Mexico does not believe Butts is a recruitable athlete which could complicate matters with the NCAA.

One final piece of fallout from Locksley's regime: The losing may be a huge contributing factor in keeping the Mountain West from an automatic BCS berth in 2012 and 2013. The league is currently at the end of a four-year BCS evaluation period. The league reportedly meets two of the three benchmarks needed for automatic qualification status and may have to ask the BCS for a waiver going forward.

The Mountain West is one of five conferences without an automatic BCS bid.

UNM's Locksley first casualty of the season

If I was a UNM booster or student, the loss to the Aggies last year would have done it for me...that is like San Jose State beating USC or Austin Peay beating the University of Texas...or Youngstown State beating Ohio State...that should just not happen. If Mike Leach wants to go to UNM(I can't think of any reason he would), that would be an instant buy in from the players and help the program...the one drawback is that Leach is overqualified for that job and would be leaving in a year or two as soon as a Mississippi State or Michigan State or Kansas State or Washington State or Colorado type job came open. You don't need a guy pulling a Houston Nutt on your program...

UNM's Locksley first casualty of the season

Hey he did what he could with what he has.  Its up to the players to play the game.  but this will all be found out with the next one who replaces him and the next one and the next one.  But lets look at the other games baseball is a disaster, basketball is also a disaster, womens league a disaster so what gives.  Its not only  him all these games are an embarrassment to UNM I for one would not even consider watching any of them it would be a giant waste of my time.  I would rather watch IOWA OR A TEAM LIKE THAT.

UNM's Locksley first casualty of the season

No one in New Mexico is going to miss this guy!  The UNM football team has become an embarassing disgarce to the state, and locksley pathetic won/loss record is bad enough.  His questionable activities sealed the deal.

Nobody in New Mexico is going to miss this guy.  All you need to do is look at his won/loss record and count the many scandals.  The team has become an embarrassment to the state while Locksley was the HC.

UNM's Locksley first casualty of the season

So I have seen some reports where the "recruit" in question got the DWI in a car registered to Locksley.  I have no idea if that is true but if it is the phrase "nobody is that stupid" has a huge credibility issue.  Locksley should not be allowed to have anything to do with college football ever again but he absolutely should be allowed to sell his stroy to Hollywood because there is just no telling what crazy stuff would come out!

Although New Mexico never should have hired this clown in the first place, he should have fired immediately after he punched the assistant coach. Had New Mexico administrators done the right thing and terminated Locksley at that time, they would avoided two years worth of additional embarrassments on and off the field that have seriously tarnished the public perception of this program.

no program should hire Locksley as he does not belong in college football.
he should have been fired two years ago after punching his assistant coach.
he is a poor example for the young men who play this game.

he brought in to UNM all these thug-type players who were rejected or run-off by other programs
and all those payers never lasted more than a couple months at UNM.

he completely sucked as a recruiter.

good riddance, Fat Albert!!!

we want Leach!!!!!

UNM's Locksley first casualty of the season

For the sake of the Lobo program, I hope that kid arrested for DWI was not a recruit. If he is a recruit the ncaa will make sure the program pays for it.  Thats all the program needs, more sanctions.  Lets not forget that our beloved Rocky Long (SDSU), left this program with 5 less scholarships a year.  Also all of those people calling for athletic director P. Krebs to be fired, realize that he was shooting for lighting in a bottle when he hired Locksley.  It didn't work, no doubt, but he stuck by his guy as any good AD would.  The rest of the Lobo athletic program is in great shape.  I hope the Krebs goes after Mike Leach hard.  Go Lobos.  Ill be there next weekend when the Lobos face in state rival New Mexico State.
