New Mexico coach Mike Locksley has become the first coaching casualty of the season. The Lobos' third-year coach was fired Sunday, a source told CBSSports.com. The firing comes less than a day after a youth was arrested for DWI while driving what was reportedly a car registered to Locksley.

Locksley was 2-26 in less than 2 1/2 seasons, his latest loss coming in overtime Saturday to FCS Sam Houston State. When AD Paul Krebs hired him in December 2008, Locksley was a hot coaching prospect having helped lead Illinois to the Rose Bowl. Locksley was known as an ace recruiter. Prior to his first season, he went to directly to a familiar area attempting to stock the New Mexico roster -- Washington, D.C.

In 2007, D.C. native Arrelious Benn was the Big Ten freshman of the year for Illinois. Benn was among at least nine players Locksley landed from the D.C. area from 2005-2008.

Things quickly went South in Albuquerque. Before his first season, Locksley was hit with a sex and age discrimination lawsuit by an administrative assistant. In September 2009, he was reprimanded after an altercation with an assistant. Locksley was suspended for 10 days.

On Saturday, recruit Joshua Butts was arrested for aggravated DWI, a minor in possession of alcohol and driving without a license.New Mexico does not believe Butts is a recruitable athlete which could complicate matters with the NCAA.

One final piece of fallout from Locksley's regime: The losing may be a huge contributing factor in keeping the Mountain West from an automatic BCS berth in 2012 and 2013. The league is currently at the end of a four-year BCS evaluation period. The league reportedly meets two of the three benchmarks needed for automatic qualification status and may have to ask the BCS for a waiver going forward.

The Mountain West is one of five conferences without an automatic BCS bid.

Nothing in the article says the Mountain West is or has been a BCS automatic qualifying conference.  But in fact it is true that this is the fourth year in an evaluation period to determine whether an additional conference should become a BCS conference next year.  See the story at  to see the factors under consideration.

It`s about time, they fired him. They claimed 15,000 attendance, in yesterday game. But the stands looked very empty vs Sam Houston St., to have that many people there.

UNM's Locksley first casualty of the season

Locksley is similar to the Kansas City Chiefs coach Haley.  They come with a nice set of paperwork, look good in a bathing suit. and smell great, but cannot coach to save their lives.  Locksley will get a new job somewhere, somehow and New Mexico will move on.  They do need help and I hope they get it

Im confused, Dodd.... everything else Ive ever read clearly says the Mountain West does NOT have an automatic BCS bid. When did you grant them one and by whose authority did you do that?

UNM's Locksley first casualty of the season

It's about time. I fear that the damage done to this program is near irreparable but this is a necessary move to get the Lobos headed in the right direction again.  At least the lesson that recruiting means nothing without coaching ability and character should help the UNM administration to avoid repeating a fiasco like Mike Locksley.  Here's to a rebirth and renewal of Lobo football.

I'm pretty sure the BCS AQ conferences are the Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, SEC and Pac-10 through 2013.

Worst coach in the history of college football; how he wasn't fired a year ago is astonishing.  The combination of losing and off-field embarassments was ridiculous.

Oh, and the guy that we essentially chased out of town to hire Locksley?  Seems to be doing alright at SDSU.

While I'm not a New Mexico fan, this guy was a complete and total embarrassment to the University of New Mexico. Throw in the fact he was everything BUT a good football coach / recruiter and he should have never received the job in the first place. UNM has had good teams in the past and hgere's one Texas Tech fan hoping they get things turned around again and back to normal.
