Finally, a meaningful upset; Tech over Oklahoma

And you thought Adam James was merely a character in a Mike Leach novel.

Turns out the son of Craig James is one son of a guns up in the clutch. When last seen on the college football landscape almost two years ago the privileged, mouthy Texas Tech receiver was getting “locked” in a “shed”, helping get his coach, Mike Leach, fired.

Turns out, Adam can wreck more than careers. His five catches helped bring down No. 1 Oklahoma (coaches’ poll) in the season’s biggest upset, 41-38. Who saw that coming? Not those of us who thought the defenseless Red Raiders could cover the four-touchdown spread. Not Oklahoma which watched its 39-game home winning streak end. Not Bob Stoops who had last lost at home in the 2005 opener. That loss to TCU was fallout from the Big Red Motors scandal.

This one just left the Sooners red-faced. It possibly wrecked Oklahoma’s national title hopes. The polls and BCS are not likely to view favorably a home loss to a team Oklahoma hadn’t lost to 15 years.

In the immediate aftermath, we have some drama at the top for the first time this season. BCS No. 3 (Oklahoma) and No. 6 (Wisconsin) BCS lost. The biggest beneficiaries seem to be Oklahoma State and Boise State. The Cowboys will likely move up to No. 3 in the latest BCS standings on Sunday. Okie State is Oklahoma Light no more. It remains in control of its own destiny after a convincing win over Missouri.

Meanwhile, Boise State – remember the Broncos? – could move up to No. 4 in the BCS. While Boise’s win over Air Force wasn’t convincing, there are only eight undefeated teams remaining with six weeks left in the season. Two of them are additional BCS hopefuls Clemson and Stanford, other big winners from Saturday.

It was quite a night – to reminisce – for Leach. Two of his former players helped knock off the Sooners, something he did three times in 10 tries. Adam James justified his scholarship catching five passes for 75 yards. James came into the game with seven catches all season and 41 total in his checkered career. If you have to be reminded Leach has three lawsuits active in the aftermath of his firing at Tech, all of them stemming from his alleged mistreatment of Adam James.

Swing  Your Sword? James would like to take a swing at Craig James.

Tech offensive coordinator Neal Brown had Leach as his position coach at Kentucky. The 31-year-old was hired away from Troy by Tommy Tuberville. Speaking of the  ol’ Riverboat Gambler, Tuberville got his biggest win since leaving Auburn. He was 5-2 against top five teams with the Tigers.

Perhaps Oklahoma could have used Keith Nichol. You know the former Oklahoma quarterback? That was sooo 2007 when Nichol spent a forgettable season in Norman before transferring to Michigan State where he once again became a forgettable quarterback.

Nichol, now a receiver, did what he never could at Oklahoma, score a winning touchdown. The fifth-year senior will go down as a Spartan for the ages after catching the winning touchdown against Wisconsin as time ran out.

“My heart,” said Spartan coach Mark Dantonio who recovered from a heart attack a year ago, “is racing.”

Michigan State’s win effectively took the Big Ten out of the national championship race but who cares? We’re all for a replay of this game which could come in the first Big Ten title game.

We also now have a more interesting national championship race. Someone is going to have to play the winner of LSU-Alabama. It is absolutely wonderful that we have less of an idea who that will be after Saturday.

Early best guess on the BCS top five on Sunday

  1. LSU
  2. Alabama
  3. Oklahoma State
  4. Boise State
  5. Stanford

Should read "lost at home to in 15 years"

Tech beat Oklahoma the last three times the Sonners came to Lubbock. In fact Tech has a 4-3 advatage over the Sooners since 2005. The only thing shocking about this game is where it took place.

For Potato St. to even get a NC game shot, we need to be talking about 2 losses by major college teams. There are too many good teams this year. There are too many more deserved teams. If you are judging SOS on teams, other than Georgia, who does Po Po state play?

And there it is thegourds.... The world famous SEC catch 22!

It says:

The SEC is the best conference in college football because every week you have a tough game.  Alabama and LSU have to play Georgia, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Arkansas...blah, blah, blah.  Whew this is a tough.

The catch:
The very teams that make the SEC so tough in boasting about their conference strength are lessened when a team from another conference beats one of them.  Georgia is a good team when an SEC team beats them, but they are a team that has been rebuilding for 4 years when Boise State beats them.

SEC homers make up your mind!!  Is Georgia, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Arkansas good or not?  They sure are when you guys talk about having to play them, but not one someone else does.

Do you even watch college football cawsnallthis?  If you did you would know the service academy teams are NEVER push overs and NEVER quit.  These are soldiers who play for fun and sanity on Saturdays.  Do yourself a favor and look up the rushing team leaders.  I think you will find your "mediocre" Air Force academy ranked 2 or 3.  What is the point? The point is that when you can run the ball that well, you can effectively shorten a game and stay in it. They were able to keep Boise state's high powered offense off the field a lot longer than normal and Boise still managed to score a lot.

About the SEC OOC:
Kudos to LSU for playing Oregon...eventhough it was in Texas Stadium and a virtual home game for Oregon... Oh wait didn't Georgia pull the same crap playing Boise in the Georgia dome?  Doesn't matter...a win is a win right?  At least that the argument that favors SEC every year and no one else.

Auburn. Good job in scheduling Clemson.

It is laughable every time the SEC talks about how great their conference is and use teams like Arkansas, Georgia, Ole Miss and Tennessee to boost that argument but when a team like Boise States beats one of those teams, all of a sudden those "Dawgs" are just mediocre after thoughts of the SEC.

And about the SEC national titles because someone mentioned it.... I like the odds of a conference winning several national titles as well if there is 50/50 shot every year.  The SEC is the only conference basically guaranteed a slot in the national title game and that is just wrong.  Alabama and LSU are elite, Arkansas is good and everyon else is average.

Leach was 3-7 against OU.  Christ, Dodd.  Research much?.  More importantly, does this website employ an editor?
Hilarious.

More proof that the NC game is truly Nov. 5 in Tuscaloosa. The SEC will win its 6th straight NC, although I have no idea which giant will win that day. Oklahoma is a good football team, but Bama and LSU crush TT, especially at home. People talk about Big 12 qbs being better. Really? We know that the truth is actuall that Big 12 defenses just aren't very tough. Those guys would look, well, upward in the SEC because they'd be lying on their butts on almost every play. It's Big Man football in the South guys. Stanford would be embarrassed. Boise State is hanging its hat on beat a Georgia team that has been rebuilding for years under Richt. Oklahoma State is probably the third best team out there but they have NO defense whatsoever and haven't see true physical play like the SEC throws at you, and throws at you, and throws at you... you get the picture.

Dennis "COME ON MAN!" This blog was lazy. In the last few weeks Mike Leachs chances of winning 2 of those suits have skyrocketed during the "discovery" process. Additionally not only is Mike Leach is going to win his defamation suit against Craig "Big Daddy" James / ESPN andbut he DID in fact beat Oklahoma BAD several times duing his tenure at Tech. He just didn't ever beat OU in Norman. Then again that doesn't make him unusual it simply makes him part of the large majority.

 "COME ON MAN!"
