TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Missouri will formally join the SEC early next week according to The Sporting News. was able to confirm the Saturday afternoon report.

After a drawn-out process the began months ago Missouri will leave the Big 12 and an affiliation with some teams in that league that go back to 1907. Missouri will become the SEC's 14th team and join the East Division. It wasn't immediately clear but the school is expected to begin play in 2012.

That will end the SEC’s expansion for now, a process that intensified in early June when Texas A&M began a process to leave the Big 12. Missouri has long been concerned about the stability of the Big 12. Twice within 16 months, Texas and Oklahoma – and others in the Big 12 -- came close to joining the Pac-12.

NCAA president Mark Emmert addressed conference realignment Saturday before the LSU-Alabama game.

“I’d love to see something like a waiting period, almost,” he said. “Kind of kike the SEC, the Security and Exchange Commission. You’re going to buy a company, you have to vet it out …

“We saw that sometimes. Missouri just announced. Missouri said, ‘Yeah, we’re thinking about this.’ They spent a fair amount of time thinking about it. It was a pretty rational process.”

Missouri to the SEC next week

This would seem to be a smart financial move on the part of the Tigers and now we have border wars with Kentucky & Arkansas. That could be good, I suppose.

Missouri to the SEC next week

The SEC is desperately trying to stay relevant (in light of the PAC conference rising to Super Star status by its recent expansion) by expanding past 12 teams even after it had vehemently said that it was constitutionally, morally and logistically opposed to such a drastic change in its long-standing philosophy. I see the PAC confernece eventually expanding to 16-20 teams. As in the NFL, NFL or MLB having 4 or 5 teams in a division will lead to more excitement, intense rivalries, increased revenue and less conferences that have no business being around in the first place.

I was hoping that the ACC would have a great season this year. It seems that because the SEc has experienced only a modicum of success that everyone  on the East Coast thinks that the SEC is the best conference in the nation.

As they the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

From my own experience as a college student whenever I show up for class and turn my assignments in on time my instructors think of me as some great student...when in actuality I am only doing what is expected of all students. Sadly, many students spend more time taking drugs and getting drunk that they are not able to show up for class and turn in their assignments on time.

Now, I'm not a bad student....I'm just saying...I do what is expected of most students and I get extremely high praise for that. That's a sad commentary of the US social values when doing what is expected is seen as inspirational and outstanding! Many Americans are getting high praise for being average!!! Don't be average. Be the best that you can be.....provided that you do not hurt anyone in the process of doing so.
Somebody has a strong case of inferiority complex and is trying to justify their incorrect impressions.  Obviously not a business student or he would have realized the expansion is all about network dollars and as for the PAC taking Colorado and Utah that isn't exactly "super star status".  Reading your post I truly believe you are not "some great student" but don't quit trying big guy!

Missouri to the SEC next week

Please Missouri just leave all ready! I am tired of hearing about if you guys are going to leave or not. Let the Big 12 be able to move on and look towards the future. And by the way all you SEC people who talk about how you are the number one conference and everyone wants to join you guys, thats not true. Missouri wanted to join the Big 10 but they said no so Missouri just came to you guys. All the Big 10 has to do is give Mizzou one call and they would leave the SEC in a heart beat.

Aggys and Tigers double the AAU schools in the SEC... Translation:  They had better be smart because they sure aren't pretty.

Just not feeling this.... Why did Missouri leave the Big 12?   They were competitive and had natural rivalries.  I know the Longhorns are greedy and they suck and they think they are the center of the football universe (when realistically... I think about 5th in the SEC would be about right... LSU, Bama, Arkansas, South Carolina and maybe Georgia would all defeat them I think) but you let them win when you left the conference.    I think you made an emotional decision and not one based on logic.   I just do not see this as a good fit either geographically or athletically.

Missouri to the SEC next week

The SEC has won 5 straight Championships or Schools from the SEC won 5 straight BCS titles? What does Florida and tebow have to do with LSU's chances of winning it this year? It's been a great run by some great teams that all deserved to be there with the possible exception of a 2 loss LSU team, but it's individual teams on individual years not conference vs conference. These QB's i'm watching tonight wouldn't even be top 5 QB's in most conferences, the SEC isn't Varsity and the rest of the country JV by any means. I believe just two NFL drafts ago the Big XII had the first 4 picks and 5 of the first six taken, with around a third of the 1st round being drafted from big XII schools. Talent gap isn't much but SEC has the edge and have had some exceptional champions the last 5 years but have lost some sugar and cotton bowls over that time by the other top teams.

MU won't compete in the SEC and i'm obviously not a fan of misery but they do have a 68 winning % all time vs the SEC with the latest being a thumping of Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl in 2008. So quit acting like the SEC is the only conference that can play ball.
