TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Missouri will formally join the SEC early next week according to The Sporting News. CBSSports.com was able to confirm the Saturday afternoon report.

After a drawn-out process the began months ago Missouri will leave the Big 12 and an affiliation with some teams in that league that go back to 1907. Missouri will become the SEC's 14th team and join the East Division. It wasn't immediately clear but the school is expected to begin play in 2012.

That will end the SEC’s expansion for now, a process that intensified in early June when Texas A&M began a process to leave the Big 12. Missouri has long been concerned about the stability of the Big 12. Twice within 16 months, Texas and Oklahoma – and others in the Big 12 -- came close to joining the Pac-12.

NCAA president Mark Emmert addressed conference realignment Saturday before the LSU-Alabama game.

“I’d love to see something like a waiting period, almost,” he said. “Kind of kike the SEC, the Security and Exchange Commission. You’re going to buy a company, you have to vet it out …

“We saw that sometimes. Missouri just announced. Missouri said, ‘Yeah, we’re thinking about this.’ They spent a fair amount of time thinking about it. It was a pretty rational process.”

Missouri to the SEC next week

The SEC has won 5 National Championships in a row.

And someone just called that "a modicum of success"?

Missouri to the SEC next week

A&M has already been whining about being black balled by the rest of the Texas schools and MU will find out pretty soon that it sucks not being able to recruit in your backyard or Texas anymore because those kids want to play in the region they've grown up in. Ecspecially Texas high school players, they want to play 7 or 8 games a year in Texas either at home or against other state schools. So you have two middle of the pac BigXII teams going to the toughest conference with less recruting power, good luck and have fun spending that extra TV money..... Misery in the SEC east as the farthest west team in the conference, yeah sounds like that conference member equality is already panning out for you boys. The only time KU ever needs to play mizoo is in a second round 1 vs 8 arswhooping in the Dance. You guys just went from Texas and OU's little brothers to Florida and Bama's little sisters.

Missouri to the SEC next week

Losing Colorado, Nebraska, and Texas A&M is one thing. After all, we never had a real rivalry with them in any sport. But losing Missouri is something else. All the tradition of the Border War, all the classic games in football and basketball, and Mistake wants to throw all that away for the $EC's dirty money? Do they not care that they are alienating their fanbase in Kansas City? Is nothing sacred anymore?

Most of the time we in Kansas say "Muck Fizzou", but I'm coming on real strong here! FUCK MISSOURI! FUCK THEM FOREVER!

You should check Mizzou's history vs the SEC and you will see that you will still be in the cellar.

Dodd, fix your typo

I  know you were trying to type "like", but the L and K are close to each other of the keyboard.   And some people may take offense to your typo in the second to last paragraph.  You meant "kind of like the SEC . . . " but the k appeared.  Just saying - you may want to fix that.

Didn't I read somewhere last week that a move by Mizzou was imminent by weeks end. I'll believe it when I see it actually happen

Did you really just say the SEC is trying to stay relevant?
