BCS chaos kicks off in Eugene; I'm buying

EUGENE, Ore. – This could be the best two weeks of football in BCS history, and I’m at the kickoff party.

They’re going about two shades of crazy here Friday night at Hop Valley Brewing Co. out near I-5 in Duckland. A guy just walked in and yelled, "How about Iowa State?" It’s a brew pub that just turned into a staging area for the national championship push.

How about the Cyclones indeed? By beating Oklahoma State in overtime Friday night, they made it about football again. We can care again. Maybe we can forget tragedy and scandal -- for a little while.

Maybe for a long while. Two weeks from Sunday, two teams will be matched up to play for the 14th  BCS title. It is more than wonderful that we have no idea who they are going to be. There are six teams in the running -- LSU, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Alabama and Oregon. Oregon and Arkansas gained the most. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State the least.

But that’s just me, right now. The Hefeweizen is going down really smooth.

BCS chaos reigns. It reigns because a team whose uniforms look strangely like USC (Iowa State) just took down the nation’s No. 2. I’m here to see Oregon play the real USC on Saturday in a game that just got a lot bigger.

The Ducks are in that conga line with a bunch of one-loss teams, all of them with their hands up saying, "Pick me!"

Let the arguments begin: Do you want a rematch? LSU-Oregon awaits. So does LSU-Alabama. But shouldn’t you have to win your conference? Alabama potentially won’t. Don’t forget Arkansas, which is suddenly in the conversation.

Is Oklahoma State entirely out? Does Oklahoma deserve to be in the discussion? It lost at home to Texas Tech, which lost by 34 to Iowa State, which beat Oklahoma State. The Sooners have a chance, a small one unless …

Unless chaos continues. Who knows how OU will be perceived in two weeks? If Oregon wins on Saturday it most likely will jump to No. 2 in the BCS. Alabama plays Georgia Southern. Nothing, though, is permanent. Call it the BCS' Kardashian Moment.

Get ready for a fashion show with shoulder pads, built-in programming for sports radio. Someone give Jerry Palm a raise. Now.

You can hear the sound of Boise State kicking itself all the way from here.

Please don’t say “kicking” around the Broncos. They not only would have been in line for the BCS national championship game, they would have had to beat only San Diego State, Wyoming and New Mexico to get there. But a kid named Dan Goodale pulled a Brotzman last week, missing the game-winning field goal. That was only after TCU’s Gary Patterson proved he had more stones that Boise State had field goals.

The old missed kick seems to be an epidemic. Dan Goodale meet Oklahoma State’s Quinn Sharp, who wasn’t. Sharp missed a 37-yarder with 77 seconds left that could have beaten the Cyclones.

Nothing is permanent. Ask Kim, or give Sharp a Hefeweizen. He needs one right about now.

How about the Cyclones indeed? By beating Oklahoma State in overtime Friday night, they made it about football again. We can care again. Maybe we can forget tragedy and scandal -- for a little while.

@Thunderpants, are you serious?  The ducks boatraced tennessee last year, lost on the final play against Auburn this year, beat LSU in every offensive statistical category except turnovers (2 crucial second half fumbles by a true freshman in his first game).  I'm not making excuses for the losses, I'm just saying these games have been close and the ducks can beat an SEC team.

Didn't the Ducks give 40 points to what most people claim is one of the worst offenses(along with 'Bama's) they have ever seen after the LSU-Bama game?

OK I think Oregon would make a respectable showing in the SEC this year.  You're just saying the Ducks lost two out of three games to the SEC, but they "woulda coulda shoulda" won all three. Unfortunately you have to win them on the scoreboard, not just in your dreams.  The game they won was against a rebuilding team that hasn't been good in a while.

WOW! don't look now, but Boise St, just locked up a BCS bowl,  there is no way a two loss OK/OSU, should be ranked higher than a 1 loss Boise team! at best Boise can move to seven and can finish no worse than 8th! Clemson & VTECH play each other, so one will drop The big Ten will get 1  the SEC will get 2, Big East gets 1, Big 12 gets1  Houston and Yes Boise St.
There is still the possibility that the ACC could end up with 2 bids.  One scenario assumes if Clemson and VT win out, then they will face each other in a rematch.  If there are a couple more upsets the next two weeks then they will keep moving up in the BCS Poll.  Assuming Clemson and VT are 4 and 5 (respectively) in the BCS Poll when they play each other in the ACC CCG and Clemson loses in a close game (5 pts or less), then I don't see Clemson dropping more than 2 or 3 spots.

Since Boise St did not win the MWC then it could still be left out because Houston qualifies since it is the highest ranked non-AQ conference champion.  Boise St can only qualify as an at-large selection, which means a BCS bowl game could end up selecting a school that is either ranked above or below Boise St in the final BCS poll.  So even if Clemson (and possibly VT) ended up below Boise St, a bowl game could still end up selecting the loser of the ACC CCG as an at-large bid.  I highly doubt it though because I believe BCS bowl match-ups will be:

BCS NCG:  LSU vs. Oklahoma
Orange Bowl:  Clemson/VT vs. WVU
Sugar Bowl:  Alabama vs. Houston
Fiesta Bowl:  Oklahoma St vs. Stanford (even though I would love to see Oregon here)
Rose Bowl:  Wisconsin vs. Oregon

It is too bad that Arkansas and Boise St can't be matched up in a non-BCS bowl game, because that would be a fun game to watch.

So the Clucks who lost to LSU on a neutral field when LSU had 5 key players suspended deserves a rematch?

Oh hey I forgot they're just NOT an SEC team, so all the SEC haters have to find SOMEBODY to propose.

Wisconsin! No, wait, they lost...

Stanford can beat anybody! Well, in a weak conference, with a schedule against teams with losing records, they looked good until the Clucks got there...and the refs kept USC from "upsetting" them...

The is the same Oregon clucks who lost back to back to the SEC...Auburn and LSU...what. failure is a plus?

Face it, right now ( and for the past few years) the SEC is the best.

10 years ago, USC

Before that, Big 10

It goes in cycles, folks, and the Pac 12 isn't there yet

Go Trojans...

It will be a shame that the loser of the 1st GAME OF THE YEAR ( # 3 LSU and # 4 Oregon ) would be out of the running for the BCS game , if everybody else except LSU has a loss too ? If that is the case why would you ever schedule a game of that magnitude so early in the season and wiping out a potential national championship ?

This is the exact frame of mind that every team from an AQ conference has and is exactly why they schedules either FCS schools or completely horrible FBS teams for their OOC games to start the year.

To Turtle:

This is a link of the play by play to Super Bowl 25. Scott Norwood missed the field goal on 2nd down. After that play, the Giants kneeled the ball on the final play. There was no option to kick it again after missing. I'm just doing you a favor so that you won't look like a fool if you're arguing about this with your friends.

so Standford got no credit for beating a Top 20 team in the computers, and if Oregon does, the same
No, the Leland Stanford Junior University is getting credit for beating USC even though USC gets no Coaches or Harris Poll vetes.  All the computers rank USC and all the poll voters recognize that USC is a quality team.  But playing a schedule with San Jose State, Duke, Arizona, UCLA, Colorado, Washington State doesn't help their resume.  Sagarin rates Stanford's schedule as the 51st toughest.  Colley ranks it 79th.  Anderson and Hester ranks it 54th.
