BCS chaos kicks off in Eugene; I'm buying

EUGENE, Ore. – This could be the best two weeks of football in BCS history, and I’m at the kickoff party.

They’re going about two shades of crazy here Friday night at Hop Valley Brewing Co. out near I-5 in Duckland. A guy just walked in and yelled, "How about Iowa State?" It’s a brew pub that just turned into a staging area for the national championship push.

How about the Cyclones indeed? By beating Oklahoma State in overtime Friday night, they made it about football again. We can care again. Maybe we can forget tragedy and scandal -- for a little while.

Maybe for a long while. Two weeks from Sunday, two teams will be matched up to play for the 14th  BCS title. It is more than wonderful that we have no idea who they are going to be. There are six teams in the running -- LSU, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Alabama and Oregon. Oregon and Arkansas gained the most. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State the least.

But that’s just me, right now. The Hefeweizen is going down really smooth.

BCS chaos reigns. It reigns because a team whose uniforms look strangely like USC (Iowa State) just took down the nation’s No. 2. I’m here to see Oregon play the real USC on Saturday in a game that just got a lot bigger.

The Ducks are in that conga line with a bunch of one-loss teams, all of them with their hands up saying, "Pick me!"

Let the arguments begin: Do you want a rematch? LSU-Oregon awaits. So does LSU-Alabama. But shouldn’t you have to win your conference? Alabama potentially won’t. Don’t forget Arkansas, which is suddenly in the conversation.

Is Oklahoma State entirely out? Does Oklahoma deserve to be in the discussion? It lost at home to Texas Tech, which lost by 34 to Iowa State, which beat Oklahoma State. The Sooners have a chance, a small one unless …

Unless chaos continues. Who knows how OU will be perceived in two weeks? If Oregon wins on Saturday it most likely will jump to No. 2 in the BCS. Alabama plays Georgia Southern. Nothing, though, is permanent. Call it the BCS' Kardashian Moment.

Get ready for a fashion show with shoulder pads, built-in programming for sports radio. Someone give Jerry Palm a raise. Now.

You can hear the sound of Boise State kicking itself all the way from here.

Please don’t say “kicking” around the Broncos. They not only would have been in line for the BCS national championship game, they would have had to beat only San Diego State, Wyoming and New Mexico to get there. But a kid named Dan Goodale pulled a Brotzman last week, missing the game-winning field goal. That was only after TCU’s Gary Patterson proved he had more stones that Boise State had field goals.

The old missed kick seems to be an epidemic. Dan Goodale meet Oklahoma State’s Quinn Sharp, who wasn’t. Sharp missed a 37-yarder with 77 seconds left that could have beaten the Cyclones.

Nothing is permanent. Ask Kim, or give Sharp a Hefeweizen. He needs one right about now.

How about the Cyclones indeed? By beating Oklahoma State in overtime Friday night, they made it about football again. We can care again. Maybe we can forget tragedy and scandal -- for a little while.

BSG

Washington had a stronger OOC schedule than every top SEC except LSU and eventually Georgia cause they choose not to play a very weak OOC like most SEC teams do.  The only way to solve this is  for teams like Eastern WA, and most of SEC OOC schedule.  Then change the BCS to a play off  system.  My issue is when SEC fans say SEC conference is so much better when their OOC is sooooo weak. In bowl games last year SEC went 5-4 how is that soo much better than other conferences?????

ALL THE FOOTBALL EXPERTS YET NO1 HAS MENTIONED THIS

BOISE STATE VS TCE     2nd down 7 to go less than a minute , a run yields na na  then a stupid run to position the ball now 4th down
and the field goal kicker comes in and MISSES

WHAT A MAJOR COACHING ERROR

HOW ABOUT

KICKING FIELD GOAL ON 2nd  DOWN   if u miss u still have 3rd and 4th down left
so you try again on 3rd down  u miss
u try again on 4th down

THREEE CHANCES TO MAKE  BCS TITLE GAME NOT 1

THE COACH LOST THE GAME

Lol, that is funny because that is the same thing that is said about just every other one loss team in this arguement? The Boise States and TCU's, Sooners, etc etc, The funny part about most of this that every one keeps saying they get why LSU and Bama should be there, with quality wins but all of you do realize that the Hogs, Tide and Tigers pretty much play the exact same teams hahaha yet win it comes to Arkansaa its said that they beat no one, but win LSU and Bama play those teams its amazing. Am i the only one getting this? Arkansas beat the No 9 team in the land and dropped in the rankings....you will be hard pressed to find another instance in the last 4 years in which that happened. The Hogs only loss was to a top 3 team this year. I am just saying OHIO STATE has been doing this for years and all of a sudden its a problem because its an Arkansas team.
You havent played anyone of note. LSU has beaten Oregon and WV as OOC opponents. Alabama beat Penn St and destroyed Arkansas 38-14. The only 2 teams on Arkansas schedule that they beat are Auburn who isnt ranked now and last week's SC who should be in the top 25, luckily they get to dodge both LSU and Bama or you could chalk up a loss because they are hurting without Lattimore and having to start a lack luster QB. But guess what? There is a difference between Ohio St and Arkansas, Ohio St at least handled it's business within the conference. You already lost to alabama handidly ... and you have to hope you can beat LSU. Take care of LSU first before you start crying favoritism. And, Ill be pulling for Arkansas next week too because If we win out, you guys get us in the SEC championship with a win over LSU!

I agree that we need a playoff system because it would help prove who truly is  the champ.. Everyone has their opinion and I totally respect that. You can make an argument for just about any team in the top 6 or 7. LSU by far has proven to be the best team this year. Thewent out and got a pretty hefty OOC schedule and ran it with ease.  Here's the thing all schools do and not just the SEC. They schedule those games for 2 reasons.  They do it to obviously get a win, but its also a way to help the smaller schools fund their programs.  I'm okay with scheduling them, but weight it in regards to the initial ranking or cut the number down from 4 to 2 games in most cases.  Now having said that The teams in the top 6 have proven they should be there. They won there games and they are there. Unfortunately this is the current system and it is flawed. The ranking are all bias and opinion. Everyone deserves to be there including Arkansas.  They played a solid SEC schedule only losing to bama and that was with 7 starters missing as hogwild pointed out. Give us Bama again and I think it is a closer game if not a win.  Don't forget that the hogs have beaten LSU 3 of the last 4 years. so mrbcs why dont you check your facts before you start staying arkansas runs whne we play the big games. I think we have proven otherwise.

This just likely means that one or a pair of one-loss teams will be voted in over other one-loss teams.  Ho hum.  Another beauty contest with the Russian judge voting for his favorite

perfect summation of it. This season is a perfect example of how horrible the BCS is. One post season game will have meaning and even that may or may not be legit. Every other bowl game is meaningless thanks to this horrible system

The BCS is great a sham

there... i fixed it for the silly ohio state hillbilly

the BCS is completly ruining this season....all these evenly matched teams and the decision who plays in the championship will be decided by a vote.  complete and utter crap.

can you imnagine how great a 8, 12, or 16 team playoff would be this year?
