USC stuns No. 4 Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. -- This was their bowl, complete with no ocean, no sun and no lavish gifts. And hate, don’t forget that. Plenty of hate from a hostile crowd.

But this was USC’s bowl because they can’t go to a real one. So why not another stunner on the national landscape? Oregon kicker Alejandro Maldonado's 37-yard field goal missed at the gun, allowing the Trojans to hang on, 38-35.

Iowa State wasn’t ranked when it upset Oklahoma State Friday night. USC couldn’t be ranked, at least in the coaches’ poll, when it knocked off No. 4 Oregon at Autzen Stadium. The difference? Your level of shock. Suddenly, they looked like the Trojans of old. The shame of it is, this was their bowl, the high point of the season. In November. It really doesn’t get any better than this.

But they played like it was January with everything on the line. Oregon, a 16 ½-point favorite, didn’t. And so now we have even more BCS chaos.

But before we go there, let’s credit these Trojans. Officially, they have nothing to play for this season. Seventeen months ago the NCAA slapped a two-year bowl ban on the program. Unofficially, they might be the best team you won’t see in the postseason.

They were led by Matt Barkley, who could be in the NFL right now, but chose to tough it out through the bowl ban. He threw four touchdown passes. Receiver Marqise Lee is a freshman All-American if there ever was one. Sophomore Robert Woods was nicked up this week but caught two touchdown passes.

Safety T.J. McDonald has been accused of playing over the line. It was a straight line he took to block an Oregon punt in the third quarter.

The shame of it is, these current Trojans have nothing to do with the wrongdoing. The coach, AD and principal rulebreaker are gone. It’s been so long that Reggie Bush is closer to retirement than the goal line.

For Oregon, it could be emptiest division title in the short 20-year history of division titles. The Ducks needed one win in their last two to wrap up the Pac-12 North Division. Now they’ve have to get it next week against Oregon State.

USC stuns No. 4 Oregon

Arkansas beats LSU, Auburn beats Alabama, Georgia beats Arkansas. That would give Oklahoma State(if it beats Oklahoma) and Stanford hope to be in the BCS title game probably against LSU. If Notre Dame upsets Stanford, Boise State would have a real shot. Houston could be undefeated(if they beat a decent Tulsa team) and not have a shot.

This makes no sense, because if Arkansas beats LSU and the rest of your scenario happens, then you have LSU playing for the national championship and didn't win their conference, which everyone wants to bitch about.  Try again.

I think if Arkansas beats LSU they'll probably jump Bama, even if Bama beats Auburn.  However, I believe the SEC tie breaker still goes to Bama in that scenerio.

"The tied team with the highest ranking in the Bowl Championship  Series Standings following the last weekend of regular-season games  shall be the divisional representative in the SEC championship game, unless the second of the tied teams is ranked within five-or-fewer  places of the highest ranked tied team. In this case, the head-to-head  results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the  representative in the SEC championship game."

I'm not disagreeing with you in any way, except the fact that if Arkansas beats LSU, I think they'll jump Bama; but it still won't matter as long as Bama beats Auburn.

USC stuns No. 4 Oregon

how many years are we, as fans, going to have to put up with this cheating fraud scam of a system to decide the NC

the BS has a MESS....NO.1

to those ass kissing media who are going to shove alabama in our faces as being worthy after giving up 21 points to georgia southern on a weekend every other conference is playing rival games AMONG their own conf. WE WANT A PLAYOFF!!!

Do NOT allow any team that did not win their conference play in the Championship game.

and houston....yes they probabky arent worthy in the eyes of the BcS or anybody but they are undefeated and there is YOUR MESS BcS. im sorry but alabama should NOT BE GETTING A FREE PASS FOR PLAYING GEORGIA SOUTHERN on a weekend every other conference played rivals or top teams...HELL NO we are over the scam of the BcS. the suc thinks they are so sneaky with putting yet another CUPCAKE game on this weekend when every other conference has their rival game. OH NO...we arent buying it any more. they had their chance and THEY LOST IN THE SNORE OF THE CENTURY...nobody outside of the south wants to see a rematch of this. alabama- kent state, north texas, georgia southern and a dont give us...our conf is so tough excuse... when every other conference is playing games to decide the conference and maybe you will be worthy....ISNT THAT WHAT THE MEDIA WOULD WRITE ABOUT ANY OTHER TEAM playing a cupcake in week 11 say??? YES IT WOULD BE! ps...you didnt win your own championship and we are over the yearly...we will sneak a suc team a free pass to the championship game slot because our president thought up this SCAM CHAMPIONSHIP process

You have issues.  Mental issues.  First off, Georgia Southern would beat half the teams in every BCS conference with that option they run.  If you don't see that offense very often, it's hard to stop.  Second, one touchdown was a kickoff return.  Defense gave up 14 points.  Third, I want a playoff too.  Fourth, just because other teams played rivals or top teams on a weekend when Bama played an FCS team has nothing to do with it.  Bama plays it's rival, an SEC team, next week.  Fifth, keep chearing for your Hawkeyes. They need it.

There should be one rule in the BCS championship game,

You don't win your conference Championship you don't qualify for the National Championship game.

If they had this rule in the NFL, the Packers would not have been eligible for the Super Bowl XLV.
If they had this rule in MLB, the Cardinals would not have been eligible for the 2011 World Series.
The Dallas Mavericks did not even win their division.
UConn finished tied for NINTH in the Big East Conference and won the NCAA Basketball tournament last year.

Try again.

Your dumb.  Although I hate the BCS, the rule of the BCS is to get the two best teams in the championship game.  Not the two best who have won their conference.  Most of the time, that occurs, but this year the two best teams are LSU and Alabama.  It's pretty obvious.  Arkansas can make their case Friday.

How dumb is that suggestion?

It is like saying all of the wildcard / non division winners teams in NFL, MLB or NBA should not play in Championship game.  If we had playoffs the intent is to have the two best team play NOT have two reps from two conferences.  Your logic is why BCS stinks and that pitify BCS game that is stuck with Big East Champion.
Your analogy is deeply flawed. Those leagues have playoffs to determine winners on-the-field, not according to computer printouts and human bias.

The second part is far more logical, when you say if we had playoffs. However, we don't. That's why his suggestion isn't dumb. Also Alabama basically had a playoff game with LSU and lost. In football playoffs, you don't get another shot, because you may be better than another team on paper. You prove it in a do-or-die game.

If Arkansas beat LSU and Bama beat Auburn

1. Bama
2. Arkansas
3. LSU

Yep. That's why a call for a playoff will be the loudest ever. Alabama despite losing at home to LSU, wins a tie-breaker, based on human input both through vote and computer statistics. They get to play Georgia and if they win, get to Arkansas again. not LSU. They already beat Arkansas. LSU beats Alabama and goes to the Sugar bowl. How is that fair at all?

The best thing for non-SEC teams would be this scenario...

Hey LSU beat Alabama and you are saying that if Arkansas beats LSU, Bama is at the top?  Great, so the team that Bama gets beat by, loses to a number 3 and you jump Bama ahead of both.  First that won't happen but more importantly why does everyones math put Bama up there all the time?  We need some type of playoff so we don't have to guess who is number one.  Ridiculous...

You have to wonder just how good USC will be next season if Barkley comes back.  Ther offense will be loaded.  The defense should be improved.  It is just a question of attrition, since USC will be down so many scholarships.  USC also gets Oregon and Notre Dame at home next season.  My guess is that the possibility of a 10 win season this year will shut the Kiffin haters up permanently now.  If USC is this good now, how good will they be in 2012, when they CAN go to a Bowl game?
