USC stuns No. 4 Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. -- This was their bowl, complete with no ocean, no sun and no lavish gifts. And hate, don’t forget that. Plenty of hate from a hostile crowd.

But this was USC’s bowl because they can’t go to a real one. So why not another stunner on the national landscape? Oregon kicker Alejandro Maldonado's 37-yard field goal missed at the gun, allowing the Trojans to hang on, 38-35.

Iowa State wasn’t ranked when it upset Oklahoma State Friday night. USC couldn’t be ranked, at least in the coaches’ poll, when it knocked off No. 4 Oregon at Autzen Stadium. The difference? Your level of shock. Suddenly, they looked like the Trojans of old. The shame of it is, this was their bowl, the high point of the season. In November. It really doesn’t get any better than this.

But they played like it was January with everything on the line. Oregon, a 16 ½-point favorite, didn’t. And so now we have even more BCS chaos.

But before we go there, let’s credit these Trojans. Officially, they have nothing to play for this season. Seventeen months ago the NCAA slapped a two-year bowl ban on the program. Unofficially, they might be the best team you won’t see in the postseason.

They were led by Matt Barkley, who could be in the NFL right now, but chose to tough it out through the bowl ban. He threw four touchdown passes. Receiver Marqise Lee is a freshman All-American if there ever was one. Sophomore Robert Woods was nicked up this week but caught two touchdown passes.

Safety T.J. McDonald has been accused of playing over the line. It was a straight line he took to block an Oregon punt in the third quarter.

The shame of it is, these current Trojans have nothing to do with the wrongdoing. The coach, AD and principal rulebreaker are gone. It’s been so long that Reggie Bush is closer to retirement than the goal line.

For Oregon, it could be emptiest division title in the short 20-year history of division titles. The Ducks needed one win in their last two to wrap up the Pac-12 North Division. Now they’ve have to get it next week against Oregon State.

There should be one rule in the BCS championship game,

You don't win your conference Championship you don't qualify for the National Championship game.

How can you say a team that did not win it's conference is a champion?

I  know 'Bama fans would be upset to hear that but that is the way it should be.

Of course if the Razorbacks beat the Tigers Friday,  then Bama could still win the west if they are ranked higher in the BCS than Arkansas.  But if the number 3 team beats the number 1 team I would expect and hope the number three team would leap to number 1.  But then again,  who knows what the writers and computers will think.
@Mikey,

How dumb is that suggestion?

It is like saying all of the wildcard / non division winners teams in NFL, MLB or NBA should not play in Championship game.  If we had playoffs the intent is to have the two best team play NOT have two reps from two conferences.  Your logic is why BCS stinks and that pitify BCS game that is stuck with Big East Champion.

Fact is right now the three best team sin the NCAA are all in the SEC West.  The same argument could have been true last year.

1. LSU
2. Bama
3. Arkansas

If Arkansas beat LSU and Bama beat Auburn

1. Bama
2. Arkansas
3. LSU

Bama will play Georgia on SEC Game, but the SEC West will have 3 Co Champions in LSU, Bama & Arkansas

Bama and Arkansas will play in National Championship game.  This time not on the road in Alabama and this time all 5 defensive started are back. Dennis Johnson is healthy and Knile Davis may play?  He is practicing with team, soi we don't know.

While we need a playoff, we could use better non bias voters right now.  I am convionced that most of the bvoters are ignorant or do not have a clue about all of the schools they voting on.  Arkansas has been getting shaft in voting all season longs. One poll had the #17 last week.  Hogs lose to #2 Bama and damn near drop out of the top 20 in AP.  Bama lose to LSU fall one spot.  OU lose to Texas Tech and stay in top 10 over Arkansas.  Oregon moved back to the top because one pundit said they are better team now than when thre lost to LSU.  Clemson, VT and Stanford were all put in positions to magically be in front of SEC Razorbacks.  Well the truth is sad in this case, Hogs will finally get the right ranking at #3 today, but it is sad; it is not because the experts realize how good they really are, but because they have been FORCED to realize how wrong they have been with OSU, OU, & Oregon. I have asked the question all year who has OU or OSU beaten but no rersponse.  Both best victory was a lame Texas team.

With regard to the Battle of Battle Rouge.  Same experts for months have all just assume LSU be Razorbacks.  That may occur as they are at home.  But is ever there was a Not So Fast!!!  Hogs have beat LSU 3 out of last 4 years including the game last year that put hogs in BCS.  Hogs also beat LSU in Baton Rouge when they were #1 the year they won National Title.  Don't mis read me, SEC tough and LSU / Bama has earned all the attention they receive.  Hogs will only get their do this week on a forced play that the Experts did not see coming.

When are we as fans going to hold these Charlatans, (BCS) acccountable?  The NCAA, BCS and College Presidents have nothing without the alums and fans.  I propose a boycott of all bowl games this year.  Begin by figuring out who is going to be the advertisers for the bowl games.  Begin a communication campaign and advise them we are NOT going to be watching and in fact are not going to be using their products this Holiday season.  Then do not tune in:  there is the NFL, NCAA basketball and the NHL.  I expect it will take only one season of bowls to correct this wrong.

As your incentive know how exciting it will be to take the top 16 teams, and have a one month playoff.  The cinderellas get their chance, (Boise State and Houston), and LSU has to prove their superior worth on the field of play.  The current system is much like judging figure skating and gymanstics.  Who knows if it is like the NCAA basketball tournament is there a one loss team who could make a tremedous run:  Oregon, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech et al. ?

USC is working fewer scholarships already. Which means, they are either A) getting the recruits they need/want with what scholarships they do have and B) are getting (roughly speaking) more out of what talent they do have in regards to A.

What's good for USC is that, doesn't look like fewer scholarships or post-season bans are a problem at all, whcih bodes well for the future for them once they have a full boat of scholarships to hand out and post-season ban is done.

I don't get how anyone "loves" a sport that doesn't let its ahtletes decide the Champion. We saw how much all the "experts" and computers know this weekend, as team after team was upset.
Until college football has a playoff in place, they will never crown a true Champion and until they do that, it's simply not worth my attention.
