Arizona replaces Sgt. Hulka with ... Rich Rod

CBS Sports Network loses an analyst. Arizona gets a future.

That’s my first impression after hearing that Rich Rodriguez is taking the Arizona job. Just about the perfect hire. Rich Rod is hungry and wants to prove himself after the Michigan detour. Arizona needs to be revitalized. Rodriguez needs a job.

In short, Rich Rodriguez fits in Tucson. It is a laidback town, one of those big-little towns that isn’t pretentious. Larger than Morgantown, not as tradition-bound as Ann Arbor. In terms of sideline demeanor, Rodriguez is the antithesis of Mike Stoops. Arizona just traded Sgt. Hulka for this guy.

That’s motivation.

Let’s be honest: Both sides needed rejuvenation. The Michigan thing just didn’t work out. Stoops had worn out his welcome. This just made Arizona matter again.

You can believe Rich Rod will attract top quarterbacks. No word on who he’ll get as defensive coordinator, but you can be sure Wildcat football will be exciting again. This is a new era in the Pac-12 and for the only team in the old Pac-10 never to play in the Rose Bowl, this is a home run.

Rich Rod blows.  He's not a great coach...not even a good one.  He obviously couldn't be an analyst soooooooo......Here we go...the ole coaching caraousel.  Happens in NFL all the time.  Oh you sucked here BUT you'll be much beter over here. THE GUY SUCKS.  Why not go find the "next Urban Meyer"?  This guy is nothing more than an OC.  Michigan saw what a joke he was and so will Arizona.  Remind me again why Arizona has a football team?  What a joke.

He will give Arizona an exciting offense just pray he hires a top notch defensives coordinator and lets him do his job. While at Michigan they scored a bunch but they gave up even more. He doesn't care about defense and that didn't work in the big 10.

As a Wildcat fan I am NOT a happy camper at this news.  Rich Rodriguez was NOT who I wanted on the sideline as our new coach.  But . . . it's done  . . . so . . . while I don't think he was the right choice . . . and I feel slighty nauseous . . . I sincerely hope he proves me wrong!  If he can get the program on the right track and take us to the Rose Bowl I'll be more than happy to admit I was wrong . . . and eat all the negative words about him that have come out of my mouth tonight!

I say give the guy a chance. He did WVA good but could not do it in Michigan. At this point in time, he is UofA's best bet. I for one would like to see him do well...except against my Bruins.

Hi, your Utah comment is degrading. Just so you know, Utah has been downright amazing this year if you consider the factors they have endured. Utah lost it's starting QB just a few games in the season with a season ending shoulder surgery. The back-up QB was not in fall camp and he did not receive any division 1 offers. He was headed to Nebraska-Omaha but they cut their program so he was just added to the Utah roster weeks before the season began. Utah was the only division 1 team to start the season without one running back with any division 1 experience.  Utah will end the season 8-4 with an outside chance to play Oregon for the berth to the Rose Bowl. If not, Utah will play either Oklahoma or Baylor in the Alamo Bowl, which would be the third highested tiered bowl the Utes have every played in. Utah was kicking a field goal with second left to tie USC in the Los Angeles. Utah is the first team in history to go from non-bcs status to bcs status. The Utes are used to playing 2-3 bcs quality opponents each year. This year, obviously Utah has played 10 BCS opponents, 9 in a row, with a back up QB and a rookie running back. Utah has a top 20 defense and one of the best runningbacks in college football this year. For a program making this transition, Utah has been the story of the year in my opinion. Kyle Whittingham should be Coach of the Year, this is by far the hardest he has had to work. Bring on Alabama, we are not scared. And this is only year one, fear the Utes.......

I am a Michigan fan and admittedly wanted Les Miles as the coach when Rich Rodriguez was hired.  It was time for a change in Ann Arbor after three years, but I never understood the vitrial that was directed at Rich Rodriguez.  I think he came into a much more difficult situation at Michigan than he ever realized and his departure from Morgantown was less than graceful.

With all that being said, I think he is a decent man, a good coach and this is a great hire for Arizona.  Best of luck to you Rich and I hope that you rejuvenate your career there.  Seems like a really good fit for both sides.

While this guy is an offensive innovator, he was a pretty big idiot to try and make Michigan a spread running team overnight. That's why they call it the Big Slow Conference... I wish this guy luck. I hope he does well for Zona. There are so many good teams in the PAC now though that there is only so much room at the top. Look at Utah? Do they look like they could beat Alabama in a bowl game this year?

Great hire by Arizona by getting Rich Rodriguez as there new HC. Rodriguez spread offense will work better in the west then it did at Michigan and should get Arizona back to contention in the Pac-12 and the Pac-12 South right away because the man can still recruit with the best yet. Plus Rodriguez will be given more time at UA then at Michigan to turn it around there at Tucson. No matter what Arizona AD Greg Byrne's is not just thinking about basketball or other sports but now he is thinking about football to and because of that he is becoming one of the best AD's in the nation like ESPN have said. Great hire by UA.
