Arizona replaces Sgt. Hulka with ... Rich Rod

CBS Sports Network loses an analyst. Arizona gets a future.

That’s my first impression after hearing that Rich Rodriguez is taking the Arizona job. Just about the perfect hire. Rich Rod is hungry and wants to prove himself after the Michigan detour. Arizona needs to be revitalized. Rodriguez needs a job.

In short, Rich Rodriguez fits in Tucson. It is a laidback town, one of those big-little towns that isn’t pretentious. Larger than Morgantown, not as tradition-bound as Ann Arbor. In terms of sideline demeanor, Rodriguez is the antithesis of Mike Stoops. Arizona just traded Sgt. Hulka for this guy.

That’s motivation.

Let’s be honest: Both sides needed rejuvenation. The Michigan thing just didn’t work out. Stoops had worn out his welcome. This just made Arizona matter again.

You can believe Rich Rod will attract top quarterbacks. No word on who he’ll get as defensive coordinator, but you can be sure Wildcat football will be exciting again. This is a new era in the Pac-12 and for the only team in the old Pac-10 never to play in the Rose Bowl, this is a home run.

People (especially from Morgantown and Ann Arbor) may not like the guy but lets admit it... Dude can recruit.  With all the talent in the West (and even Southwest), he have the cupboards stocked in no time.  He'll be what Slick Rick was supposed to be (and do), and might even push Oregon for the most explosive offense in the coference in a few years (if he stays).  Pac-12 South just got a lot more interesting for ASU and USC and anyone coming to Tuscon.

Out.

Wow! Just passing through here. One can really tell who actually went to a major college and who went to the old community college (if any) here. One can also tell who is just regurgitating what they heard on TV. :) Rodriguez will do fine. Those that have actually played or coached the game, at the college level, will reaffirm that. I've not heard any division 1 coach give anything but praise for Rodriguez’s coaching and his development of the spread. From a psychological standpoint, it's pretty entertaining though! :)

I just want to tell all the fans, students and players for Arizona that I am truly sorry
Why?  Because Arizona didn't want to win at any cost and passed on Jim Tressel?  Considering your team's former coach was found to be running/supporting the running of a dirty program, I don't know that I'd be pointing the finger at Rich Rod.

Could you be any more dramatic?  A minor violation for exceeding practice time isn't the same as whats happening with OSU, UNC, PSU, Miami, fl.

That's right, Hoke is winning with Rich Rod's guys, but it's because RR can't coach and Hoke can. RR is a snake oil salesman at best.  Four years from now, if he's still at AZ or not, the program will be doing no better than it has over the last four years and will likely be in need of a real coach to give a talented lineup a chance to win. All you have to do is look at his record of disrespect for contracts and commitments to see that the guy cares only about himself. And when he got called out by WVU and was found to have reneged on his contract, instead of admitting his mistake, he let UM bail his butt out. What a great return UM got for that expensive gesture and what a great example he set for 'his guys'.

Have to agree with you there Izzone.  Not sure who he pissed off in Ann Arbor, although there are a ton of rumors (Lloyd).  But he definitely didn't get a fair shake.  His offense will score with the best of the Pac-12, he just better get a defensive coordinator that knows what the heck he is doing.  The two that he had in Ann Arbor, were brutal.

As an Arizona alum, I only wonder whether Rich Rod will be able to play by the rules. Or should I start worrying about how long it will be before the Wildcats face NCAA sanctions?

Great hire for Arizona. Coach Stoops took Arizona as far as he could, hopefully Rich Rodriguez can take us to places that we have never gone before, the Rose Bowl. We know that Tucson has never been a Blue Chip destination but hopefully we can at least start keeping the best players within the state, reach into Southern California, grab a few from Texas and than rely on his East coach contacts. And can we PLEASE spend a scholarship on a real kicker.
