Power Poll Week 13: SEC can't be beat

Let’s see, what would it have to be?

Georgia by 30? Georgia by 40?

That’s the projected point spread that would keep LSU out of the BCS title game as the season draws to an anti-climactic close. LSU virtually clinched a spot in the BCS game last week. It really doesn’t matter if it beats Georgia on Saturday in the SEC Championship Game. Does it?

Actually, it does. The best possible result for everyone in the SEC is Georgia winning. That would all but assure the league an unprecedented three BCS teams. That wouldn’t impact an LSU-Alabama championship game rematch.

Unless Georgia wins by 30.

Or would it be 40?

This week's Power Poll ...

1. LSU: Best. Team. Ever? Getting into discussion after beating seven ranked teams, three in top five.
2. Alabama: Second place in SEC West = Second in the country.
3. Oklahoma State: Big, big Georgia fans this week because OSU needs a big, big Bulldog margin of victory over LSU.
4. Stanford: This is the look of a hot BCS at-large: 11-1 with prospective Heisman winner.
5. Arkansas: Did Bobby Petrino have words for Les Miles? “Not many,” says LSU coach.
6. Virginia Tech: Yes, Virginia there is an ACC Championship Game. You’re just not playing in it.
7. Houston: Tulsa had its shot, and failed miserably.
8. Boise State: Chris Petersen signs two new recruits – Slim and None – in hopes of getting to BCS.
9. USC: Neuheisel: UCLA has “closed the gap.” Actually, soon to be working at The Gap.
10. Oregon: The ice on LaMichael James’ elbow looked troubling.
11.Oklahoma: Life in the Big 12: A week after giving up 600 yards to Baylor, Sooners smother Iowa State.
12. Michigan State: Classy: Dantonio didn’t rest players against Northwestern prepping for Big Ten title game. Spartans won 10 for the fourth time in history.
13. Wisconsin: Montee Ball within shouting distance of Barry Sanders’ single-season rushing touchdowns record.
14.Georgia: Richt couldn’t be blamed for going to middle of Georgia Dome and lobbing middle finger to his own fans Saturday.
15. Michigan: Exactly 366 days since Ohio State has beaten Michigan.
16. South Carolina: One of Spurrier’s masterful coaching jobs this season and against Clemson.
17. Kansas State: National coach of the year award awaiting Bill Snyder’s acceptance.
18. Baylor: Texas Tech pays for two cheap shots on RGIII. Rout 66 by Briles vs. Red Raiders.
19. TCU: Getting ready to face UNLV team that just beat North Carolina. Wait, that was basketball.
20. Nebraska: Say Rex Burkhead 38 times. Bo Pelini did. It resulted in 160 yards vs. Iowa.
21. Florida State: Jimbo Fischer has swept Miami and Florida in each of first two seasons.
22. West Virginia: Baby steps for Big East. First produce a ranked champion.
23. Southern Miss: If it isn’t already, Larry Fedora’s phone should be ringing off the hook.
24. Clemson: November goes out like a lamb for Tigers, who lost three of last four.
25. Penn State: Bowl poison?

Power Poll Week 13: SEC can't be beat

What college football needs is a playoff. Then the best teamS in the country can compete for the championship, like every other sport. Imagine a 16-team tournament that has auto-bids for the 11 conference champs, and 5 at-large slots for the best remaining teams in the BCS rankings. The seeds would be determined by the BCS rankings. Higher seeds at home until the final four.

Here is what it would look like heading into championship week:

Power Poll Week 13: SEC can't be beat

Why do people attempt the lame argument that early season losses don't mean much?  In the Oregon/LSU matter, it was the first game for each team.  LSU was better prepared, physically superior, well disciplined, and better coached . . . . and proved to be the superior team.  Oregon may be better now, but so is LSU, Alabama, and Arkansas.  The Ducks would get slaughtered worse the second time around in the SEC.

Power Poll Week 13: SEC can't be beat << AGR

First - I'm a rabid, lifelong LSU fan.

Second - Alabama is the ONLY team this year that can beat LSU.  I say "can" instead of "could" because in many ways they did win the regular season matchup.  They had an explosive offense, and only a kicker held them back in a true heavyweight slugfest.  The good thing for LSU is that they still have the same kicker.  We heard that after the game, he tried to hang himself but couldn't kick the chair from under himself, lol.

Three - Arkansas could bust up Stanford, Oregon, Boise State, Houston or Va Tech.

Fourth - South Carolina, Georgia could do well in any bowl matchups they may get.

A few things to note about LSU this season, that seem to go unmentioned in the (SEC hater) sports writers columns:
a) They played most of this season with their #2/backup quarterback.
b) They played a lot of games (Oregon, etc.) with multiple, key players suspended (kudos to Miles for discipline!)
c) LSU (and Alabama) is stacked with high caliber athletes - not just a few stars, and has great depth of strength.
d) LSU did not play even one night game in Baton Rouge against an SEC team.

Yeah, I'm an SEC homer, but that does not negate the facts that prove the SEC to be the modern day Goliath.  Size, speed and excellent coaching (from youth through college) makes the SEC awesome.  The SEC is here to stay, and the South has risen again!

Geaux Tigers!

Power Poll Week 13: SEC can't be beat

Ridden LSU's coattails? You mean going into overtime with LSU? If "Alabama is mediocre" then what does it say about the #1 team having to go into OT to win? But whatever, believe what you want to.

Power Poll Week 13: SEC can't be beat

Oklahoma State deserves to be the team that gets crushed by LSU in the crystal football game.
See, even you think Oklahoma State would get crushed by LSU. They better concentrate on Oklahoma first. A game between Bama and LSU would be just like the first. Strong defenses and take points where you can get them. Results could go either way but it would still be close.

Power Poll Week 13: SEC can't be beat

Did you ever think that they played that poorly because Alabama is that good?  LSU made Alabama look mediocre as well.
No, I didn't, because Alabama isn't that good. It's been propped up by a very weak SEC and has ridden the league's past reputation and LSU's coattails to the No. 2 spot. LSU made Alabama look mediocre because Alabama is mediocre. Oklahoma State deserves to be the team that gets crushed by LSU in the crystal football game.

Power Poll Week 13: SEC can't be beat

All I know is I am excited that my team actually has a chance to compete for the title.  If we win I will celebrate, and if we lose I will accept it.  The rest of the country needs to do the same.  We have the system we have.
I don't have to accept anything. The BCS is not a legitimate system, so I have every right to ignore it. Your team doesn't have a chance to compete for the title. It can't win the SEC, and it doesn't have a real national title to compete for.

In 2009, Alabama was the best team in the nation. Who was the national champion? Villanova.

Power Poll Week 13: SEC can't be beat

Just for the record Alabama has the top rated Pass and Rush defense.  Teams simply are unable to pass on them consistently.

Fact check a little before making ignorant statements like this.  If you are a USC fan, and support them then great.

They might actually beat Alabama, but since every team can't play every other team yet we will never know.

The fix for the system is playoffs, but the olt timers keep progress out of the game.

I fully support a playoff even if it hurts Bama's chances a little.

All I know is I am excited that my team actually has a chance to compete for the title.  If we win I will celebrate, and if we lose I will accept it.  The rest of the country needs to do the same.  We have the system we have.

Power Poll Week 13: SEC can't be beat

If LSU wins out, they have a legitimate claim to the title best team ever in the history of college football. Still two big games left though, Georgia in the Georgia dome will be tough and either Bama or OSU would be a very tough game as well.

Power Poll Week 13: SEC can't be beat

Not a huge Trojan fan, although one could argue they have the Heisman winner.  But, while the Trojans may not do anything with BAMA (they are in a class of 2), evan if Hogs put up 50, theyd probably allow 65.  Just look at that 1st half of the game in Dallas, that was pitiful.  Hind sight is 20/20, but if anybody thought they had a shot against LSU, they were dreaming.
