Petrino not seeing No. 1 recruit Thursday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino will not be making an in-person visit Thursday to the nation’s No. 1 recruit according to the player’s coach.

“A situation occurred,” Springfield (Mo.) Hillcrest coach John Beckham told CBSSports.com

Beckham said that Petrino and Hillcrest receiver Dorial Green-Beckham “bumped into each other” earlier this month in San Antonio, Texas possibly creating an NCAA recruiting issue. Petrino was in town for the American Football Coaches Association convention. Green-Beckham was there for the U.S. Army All-Star Game.

Arkansas issued a statement Wednesday saying no NCAA violation occured.

“When he was at the coaching convention in San Antonio, they bumped into each other,” said Beckham who also is Green-Beckham’s foster father. “It just so happened that another school that was recruiting Dorial happened to be there that day.”

This NCAA bylaw may apply:

In football, one contact per prospective student-athlete is permitted during each week of the contact period as specified in Bylaw 13.17.4 either at the prospective student-athlete's educational institution or any other location (e.g., prospective student-athlete's home). A visit to the prospective student-athlete's educational institution and any other location (e.g., prospective student-athlete's home) during the same calendar day shall be considered one contact.

The Army all-star game was Jan. 6. The AFCA convention was Jan. 8-11. There were NCAA recruiting "quiet" and "dead" periods during some of those dates. During those times no in-person contact is allowed with recruits by coaches. Beckham added that Arkansas will send other coaches on Thursday.

Arkansas' statement: "No violation has occured and we are taking proactive steps we feel necessary to avoid any risk of one."

As days dwindle toward signing day on Feb. 1, the rush to get Green-Beckham’s name on a national letter of intent has intensified. The 6-foot, 6-inch, 225-pound receiver has narrowed his list of finalists to Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Alabama. He is listed as having the most Twitter followers among the nation’s top 100 recruits

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops and assistant Jay Norvell visited the school on Monday. Texas coach Mack Brown is expected to visit on Wednesday. Green-Beckham made an Arkansas visit last week with his foster  brother Kingsley Ehie. Missouri coach Gary Pinkel flew in by helicopter to speak to the prospect last week. Green-Beckham's list of finalists are Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri.

Recruiting analysts are hanging on every nugget of information regarding the national single-season leader in receiving yards. Rivals.com predicted Monday that the receiver would be heading to Arkansas. Maxpreps.com analyst Steve Spiewak says he can’t understand the perception that Arkansas is in the lead. Green-Beckham says he is undecided and will make his decision known next Wednesday morning at the school.

“People really read in too much to what he says,” Beckham said. “They interviewed [Dorial] last week before a basketball tournament in St. Louis. And he said … ‘I have to go to Missouri next week.’ They all got hung up on, ‘I have to,’ instead of ‘wanting to go.’ That’s just a little example.”

Petrino not seeing No. 1 recruit Thursday

Actually, "pancho", YOU are the one being 'pathetic' here with all of your ranting & raving like a child.

It may be long ago, but the Hogs do have a Nat'l Champ. in college football('64), and have had many winning seasons in football over the years.
I don't know of any Razorback fans who have said we are the greatest team in history.  Admittedly we have struggled some in bowl games and Div/Conf titles games, but at least we have gotten to several of them.

And to add, as far as athletics in general:
Arkansas' track & field team is one of the most successful athletic teams in NCAA history.  The Hogs have a basketball team that has achieved alot of success since the 70s, and is considered by the NCAA, and most everyone else with a pulse to be one of the Top15 programs of all time.  Razorback baseball is one of the best hardball teams in he nation - every year.  Our golf team is damn good, out tennis tems are good, our women's programs in most all sports are usually at the top of their respective rankings in each women's sports.
Simply put, our entire athletics programs are pretty damn strong, even as a sparcely-populated state with many disadvantages.

Back to football.  I don't and haven't kept up with mizzou's history, I don't get obsessed with other teams, but I know mizzou has had some good teams and good seasons.  They even whipped an ill-prepared and coachless Hog team in the Cotton Bowl a few years back - congrats to that loaded and talented MU team that was one of their best in their history, they played a great game.
But you saying Arkansas is so awful and has been nothing in the history of college football is simply off-base.  If I'm not mistaken, which I may be, the Razorbacks rank somewhere in the Top15-20 of the NCAA's list of most successful programs ever in football;  we have some BIG wins over the years against some very strong teams.  I doubt mizzou is even on that list, but I havent checked it in a few years.  But you can find it out there if you care to look.  Arkansas is considered one of the better teams, in regard to overall history, in college football if you look at the rankings.
They consider: overall wins, bowl appearances, championships at different levels, etc.  Surely you get the picture.

Broyles, Holtz, Hatfield, nuttjob and Petrino have all had very good teams in Fayetteville that made big bowl games, won some of them, and had really good seasons.  Is it a crime for us as Hog fans to be proud of that??  There are also some years where the Hogs didn't have very good seasons, we all know that, and acknowledge it.  You win some, you lose some.

EVERY school/team has fans that "like to talk alot", as you say...  not just Arkansas.  Hell, I've seen several times where misery fans talk like they've beaten the New England Patriots.  It doesn't make me think all mizz fans are bad, or crazy, or that MU is a bad university or anything else foolish.

You're talking like every Razorback fan on Earth is a rabid monster who should be killed.  We're just proud fans who love our Razorback team(s).
No crime there, and we aren't any more guilty of anything than any fans of any other team.  Just because you hate us, that doesn't make us bad people or worthy of the gas chamber.

* Try to take it easy there pancho, you come off as angry & delusional.

The Razorbacks aren't cheaters, MANY college teams out there are.  We don't pay prospects, players and/or their parents for them to sign with us.  We don't buy them cars & houses.  We don't pay to put hookers and callgirls on them.

Playing fair feels good.  Winning with integrity is awesome.
(Rolls eyes and laughs)  Gee golly . . . . I guess you guys are the supermen of college football.  Let's go root for the hogs, today.  YEY!!! IT FEELS SO GOOD.  Jesus Christ, you are pathetic.

You havent had a conference title since . . . . 1989.  You haven't won a division title since . . . . Houston Nutt.  The last two seasons have been the best in Arkansas history with the exception of a couple of years in the 60s.  Congrats.  Correct me if I have said anything that isnt true.  Now, you guys want to talk like you are a top tier program and you guys aren't.  You dont compete like the elite programs do.  Like I said before, you guys are just like the Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Tex A&M, Mizzo.  You will get hot for a couple of years and then you will go back to the middle/lower end of the pack.  But, you guys sure do like to talk.

Petrino not seeing No. 1 recruit Thursday

Whoa, stop the wagons folks, freaking Mizzou is coming to the SEC. Run for your lives...  Hogs will never win again after looking at the Houston Nutt 2007 loss to Missery.  I am sure Petrino is watching that tape to install that Nutts offense of run only attack.  You Mizzou folks are embarrasing yourselves more than Dodds.

All the Arkansas-haters are just talking trash and hope we don't get DGB on NSD.  Someone who hates Arkansas has made this a big deal and has blown this out of proportion, and they hope that it hurts our chances with Beckham, and our rep;  we will be fine as Petrino runs a clean, tight ship.

Too bad ALL schools don't operate that way.

Dorial is a great kid with a good head on his shoulders.  I am hoping DGB picks my beloved Hogs, but he'll go where HE chooses to go and I wish him the best no matter what team he plays his college football for.

Petrino not seeing No. 1 recruit Thursday

Mizzou fans are looking forward to the SEC, Bama, LSU, Auburn, Florda, Georgia, and Arkansas are all great programs- all the teams are great. I think MU will hang just fine with these boys, some years better than others as all teams.

2007 Cotton Bowl ring a bell?
38-7 Mizzou, it was 28 to zip until 3:08 left in the 3rd.  Mizzou 459 total yards to 361 by Arkansas.

Tony Temple, Mizzou- you Arkansas folks remember him?  Not much of a great career, he's just the Cotton Bowl record holder...
24 carries, 281 rushing yards, 11.7 average, 4 td's on a torn hamstring, carried off the field more than once, stuff legends are made of.

D-Mac, Arkansas- he's kind of popular too
21 carries, 105 rushing yards, 5 average, 1 td, perfectly healthy...

Been some pretty decent RB's in the Cotton Bowl (The house that Doak Walter built) outside of these two, but none have put on a performance like Temple did that night.

Since 2005, Mizzou has 63 wins, 29 loses, 9 average.  Arkansas 55 wins, 32 loses, almost 8 average.  Pretty even as I give LSU, Alabama, Auburn an edge over Oklahoma, Texas, Ok State/ Texas Tech/ Texas A&M/ K-State/ Nebraska (on any given year, sometimes all of them).

I am looking foward to playing Arkansas, seems like the fans are similar to KU's fans!  I'm roasting a hog in your parking lot the first chance I get!  M-I-Z-Z-O-U.  DGB is going to look good in black and gold!  I can hear the chopper landing now...
Is there a Wal*Mart close to the stadium? I need to submit some pictures to that website...  Ya baby!

I remember when the Hogs beat LSU.  They had a great year, right up until the Cotton Bowl when they were destroyed by the Tigers.  But Mizzou couldn't possibly compete in the SEC.  Time will tell.

ElderBremenn sore much that DGB said no to Mizzou and yes to Razorback Red?  Get off the Razorback sack and move on, can't wait to smack that tail in football.
