Petrino not seeing No. 1 recruit Thursday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino will not be making an in-person visit Thursday to the nation’s No. 1 recruit according to the player’s coach.

“A situation occurred,” Springfield (Mo.) Hillcrest coach John Beckham told

Beckham said that Petrino and Hillcrest receiver Dorial Green-Beckham “bumped into each other” earlier this month in San Antonio, Texas possibly creating an NCAA recruiting issue. Petrino was in town for the American Football Coaches Association convention. Green-Beckham was there for the U.S. Army All-Star Game.

Arkansas issued a statement Wednesday saying no NCAA violation occured.

“When he was at the coaching convention in San Antonio, they bumped into each other,” said Beckham who also is Green-Beckham’s foster father. “It just so happened that another school that was recruiting Dorial happened to be there that day.”

This NCAA bylaw may apply:

In football, one contact per prospective student-athlete is permitted during each week of the contact period as specified in Bylaw 13.17.4 either at the prospective student-athlete's educational institution or any other location (e.g., prospective student-athlete's home). A visit to the prospective student-athlete's educational institution and any other location (e.g., prospective student-athlete's home) during the same calendar day shall be considered one contact.

The Army all-star game was Jan. 6. The AFCA convention was Jan. 8-11. There were NCAA recruiting "quiet" and "dead" periods during some of those dates. During those times no in-person contact is allowed with recruits by coaches. Beckham added that Arkansas will send other coaches on Thursday.

Arkansas' statement: "No violation has occured and we are taking proactive steps we feel necessary to avoid any risk of one."

As days dwindle toward signing day on Feb. 1, the rush to get Green-Beckham’s name on a national letter of intent has intensified. The 6-foot, 6-inch, 225-pound receiver has narrowed his list of finalists to Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Alabama. He is listed as having the most Twitter followers among the nation’s top 100 recruits

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops and assistant Jay Norvell visited the school on Monday. Texas coach Mack Brown is expected to visit on Wednesday. Green-Beckham made an Arkansas visit last week with his foster  brother Kingsley Ehie. Missouri coach Gary Pinkel flew in by helicopter to speak to the prospect last week. Green-Beckham's list of finalists are Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri.

Recruiting analysts are hanging on every nugget of information regarding the national single-season leader in receiving yards. predicted Monday that the receiver would be heading to Arkansas. analyst Steve Spiewak says he can’t understand the perception that Arkansas is in the lead. Green-Beckham says he is undecided and will make his decision known next Wednesday morning at the school.

“People really read in too much to what he says,” Beckham said. “They interviewed [Dorial] last week before a basketball tournament in St. Louis. And he said … ‘I have to go to Missouri next week.’ They all got hung up on, ‘I have to,’ instead of ‘wanting to go.’ That’s just a little example.”

Petrino not seeing No. 1 recruit Thursday

Dodd I think you are letting your Mizzou "alumness" get the best of you.  You probably wouldn't even cover this story if Mizzou wasn't in the hunt for him.  Arkansas assistant coaches are still going to visit DGB, which you failed to mention in your article.

Hlor3....back away from the keyboard.  Mizzou has sent 3 straight QBs to the NFL, and has a prolific spread offense that has spawned star receivers like Jeremy Maclin, Danario Alexander, Martin Rucker and Chase Coffman.  You sir, are an idiot who knows nothing of what you speak.  James Franklin (our QB who you don't know because he sucks) is a first year starter who put up great numbers this year and has been lauded by experts across the country.  Next year we have the all-time HS passing record-holder coming in as a freshman in Maty Mauk to compete with him for the QB job.  DGB said it would be "unbelievable" to play with Mauk - in an interview with Frank Cusamano - look it up.  Do your homework...maybe it'll help you learn to spell and form a proper sentence.

Petrino not seeing No. 1 recruit Thursday

I dont know anything about college football? Tell me the last time a big 12 team won a championship title? Who would win today, Arkansas or Missou? Whos offense is better Missou or Arkansas (please take into consideration the crappy big 12 defenses and great sec defenses)? Who will you rather catch balls for Tyler Wilson or Missou's, I dont even know his name because he sucks, quarterback? Now who doesn't know college football?

Petrino not seeing No. 1 recruit Thursday

"Say this fast three times, Hogs fans: Houston Nutt can coach, Houston Nutt can coach, Houston Nutt can coach. Everything else is background noise." 4/24/09  Dennis Dodd

"Kansas got into the Orange Bowl ahead of Missouri because the school guaranteed tickets. Attendance is still an issue with the Orange, and KU AD Lew Perkins guaranteeing ticket sales probably put the Jayhawks over the top.   As unseemly as it sounds, Missouri could have bought its way into the BCS. The ticket thing is left over from the old bowl system. It's clear that Perkins knows how to play the game. Missouri thought everything would work out. Well, it didn't." 12/4/07 Dennis Dodd

Petrino not seeing No. 1 recruit Thursday

Getting back to DGB...we'll all find out next week.  No one...not even razorback fans...knows where he's going.
Are you sure about that? Those of use who keep up with it do know. DGB told a fellow WR recruit during their visit to the Hill that he was coming to Arkansas, but won't announce until signing day on ESPN. Go Hogs!

Petrino not seeing No. 1 recruit Thursday

LOLOLOLOL... comparing Missou with Arkansas. You must be joking. Missou should be compared to schools like FIU, Rutgers, Colorado, and Vanderbilt. They are not worthy to be compared with the like of Arkansas. Im neither a fan of Missou or Arkansas but have respect for them (Arkansas) because they compete in the best conference in college football. To be honest, I dont think Missou is worthy of a #1 recruit like DGB because they suck too much. Arkansas is a pro style offense that can actually throw the damn ball. If you cant throw the football in the crappy big 12, you suck!!!!

Petrino not seeing No. 1 recruit Thursday

Razorback, Missery GOT BEAT!!!; That was the point or should I say Joke :-)  Nonetheless Dodd and his Mizzettees have all cleared the premises.

You see the only way Dodds can get hits is to publish trash against SEC or Razorbacks; and then the Outlanders jump on with joy until the games are played to whence they shut up.

I don't hate other conferences or schools, I just get sick of people hating on people that excel in what they do like Petrino and all of the brass in the SEC.  Give credit where it is do....
