Gene Smith statement re: Urban Meyer

This statement from Ohio State AD Gene Smith was released by the school early afternoon on Friday:

"I am disappointed that negative references have been made about our football coaches and particularly head coach Urban Meyer regarding recruiting. In our league appropriate protocol, if you have concerns, is to share those concerns with your athletic director. Then your athletic director will make the determination on the appropriate communications from that point forward. The athletic directors in our league are professionals and communicate with each other extremely well. Urban Meyer and his staff have had a compliance conscience since they’ve arrived."

It is way too easy for people to look at this and view it as whining over a lost recruit.  IT IS NOT!!!!  Bielema specifically mentioned something about Meyer's recruiting was illegal.  Bielema knows flipping recruits is not illegal.  He's done it before, he'll do it again.  This is something else, but we don't know what it is yet.

I'd be curious what these coaches are actually bitching about. Recruiting committed players? That can't be it... everyone in this league has been doing that for years.

I might feel sorry for these coaches if these weren't Ohio kids. Keep the ohio products at home and we will never have to worry about beating either Michigan school again.

I might feel sorry for these coaches except for the fact these are Ohio kids. Keep the Ohio kids at home then we can watch the Michigan programs shrivel up and sink. I for one am tired of watching Ohio kids go to Michigan or other Big 10 schools. GO BUCKS!!

I might feel sorry for these coaches if these high school players weren't both from Ohio. I say keep the Buckeyes at home and then we can watch the Michigan programs sink.

Urban will be locked in a broom closet shaking and crying within 3 years with his next breakdown.

I think if you listen to the entirety of Bielema's comments you'd see that it had nothing to do with Urban Meyer poaching recruits from other schools.  For starters, Bielema does that himself and has had kids flip to other schools before.  This is hardly anything new.

Bielema had said he called Meyer and whatever issue he had with Urban was dealt with between the 2 and the behavior in question stopped.  But, Urban kept flipping recruits right up until signing day.  So, I don't believe Bielema's complaints relate at all to poaching.  It was something else entirely.
