Ten wise guys

Ten players who could be in the NFL right now but aren't. In other words, thanks for staying in college guys ...

1. Jim Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State -- It's more about getting a degree (Laurinaitis wants to be a broadcaster) than chasing another national championship game.

2. James Davis, RB, Clemson -- Actually declared before wisely pulling out of the draft to re-form Thunder and Lightning (with C.J. Spiller) at Clemson.

3. Rey Maualuga, LB, USC -- A wild child as a freshman, maybe the No. 1 linebacker in the country as a senior.

4. Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss -- How many guys have a book written about them before they get to college?

5. Darry Beckwith, LB, LSU -- The scouts love his pursuit. Playing behind another great LSU line Beckwith should have a monster year.

6. Malcolm Jenkins, DB, Ohio State -- Is there anything more pure than this?: "I don't feel that I've accomplished everything I can accomplish in college football," Jenkins said, "and there's still a lot for me to conquer and shoot for - the national championship, another Big Ten championship, the Thorpe Award. And I really look forward to the honors and perks associated with being a senior on this team."

7. Duke Robinson, OL, Oklahoma -- Get your tears of a clown puns out of the way, this great nephew of Smokey Robinson had an amazing 13 knockdown blocks against Miami.

8. Alex Boone, OT, Ohio State -- Boone is coming back to win an Outland Trophy, ahem, if not a national championship.

9. Macho Harris, CB, Virginia Tech -- This has to be a success story: Harris declared for the draft even though he was projected in the third round. Four days before the deadline, he pulled his name back.

10. Jonathan Luigs, C, Arkansas -- How does it get better after winning the Rimington Trophy while blocking for Darren McFadden and Felix Jones?

Ten wise guys

This is just to compliment the author of this blog.  I really don't have anything to add, but the selections and the rational reasons and comments for their remaining in college show good insight.

First of all Dennis...Chris Herren had a book written about him before he ever got to college...and we all know how wonderfully that worked out.
Second of all...great call on Maualuga.  He has improved as a football player immensely.  He came in with the raw athletic ability and that half-crazed motor...but now he has mixed in enough discipline to just be a pure impact linebacker.  Sure, he is going to over-pursue at times just like his long-lost brother Junior Seau...but he has really limited his mistakes and elevated himself to the elite level.  As much as I like Laurinaitis - and I really, really like him - I don't think I'd trade Maualuga for him right now.

context and purpose was indeed excellent but not sure i agree wholeheartedly with laurinatis at the top, every pro scout out there has talked about how sad he looked in the title game vs. L.S.U and how they exposed his every weakness............and just wondering if writer was taking a stab at him because  i just read article sunday about him and they talked about how he has never gone by jimmy/jim etc. but james....hummmmmmm

Wow Dodd, 10 guys and you manage to pick 3 from a team that got embarrassed yet again in the big game. Oh by the way Lauranitis came back because he was exposed in every big game OSU played this year. If he didn't have Gholston to tackle every ball carrier so he could pile on and get an assisted tackle he'd be just another decent LB. As usual Dod writes another fluff piece.

Every pro scout?  Wow you must have some insight that no one else has in the country?  EVERY pro scout had him as a top 10 player in last years draft and probably a top 5 player in this years draft.  I dont know if you happen to catch that National Championship or if you still had tears in your eyes from getting stomped by Michigan but "James" set a BCS Championship game record with 18 tackles, how is that getting exposed?  He should have had 25?  God bless blogs, idiots with no common sense still get their opinion heard.

florida got HAMMERED by a slow, crappy BigTen team (michigan) Ohio State held to 3pts and fewest yards gained on offense in over 40 years.

florida is nothing more than a 4 loss SEC team.

Where are all the florida players on that list?   I counted 3 Ohio State Buckeyes.

enjoy another 4 loss season in the swamp.

CBS has the worst writers on the net. In the baseball dept. they have some douch bag who couldn't even find the pitchers mound even if he was standing on it. And it's nice to know football has the same. did he even look at any other team except OSU?

They should have called this article, 7 wise guys and 3 babies who haven't stopped crying since they lost the championship.
