Georgia, you're on the clock

Posted on: August 1, 2008 10:03 pm

So now it's on for Georgia, a program that has never been a preseason No. 1.

The Bulldogs debuted at on top of the coaches' poll Friday, which is nice for about 13 seconds in the SEC. Now the pressure builds. The Bulldogs will face something eight coaches this season who have won national championships. The schedule is tougher than breakfast steak. And how weird is this: Florida is ranked No. 5 but was picked over Georgia in the preseason media poll to win the SEC.

Only two teams in the last 10 years have gone wire to wire, USC in 2004 and Florida State in 1999.

The good news: Five of the last six preseason No. 1s in the coaches' poll have at least played in the BCS championship game. USC broke a streak of five in a row last season.

The breakdown of the last six preseason No. 1s:

2002: Miami lost the BCS championship game to Ohio State

2003: Oklahoma lost the BCS championship game to LSU

2004:  USC beat Oklahoma (preseason No. 2) in the BCS championship game

2005: USC lost the BCS championship game to Texas

2006: Ohio State lost the BCS championship game to Florida

2007: No. 2 LSU beat Ohio State (preseason No. 10) in the BCS championship game. Preseason No. 1 USC finished No. 2 in the coaches poll.

Unfortunately!! It is very possible that OSU could lose to USC and still wind up playing in the NC game.  The X-Factor is Illinois Ron Zook is building them like an SEC team so if they can get by them they will meet UGA in the NC game.   But, I have nop with UGA playing OSU we are undefeated against big 10 schools in Bowl games!  So come on OSU!! Woohoo!! I would rather watch UGA blow out OSU than have to suffer threw a close game we could possibly lose.  Also if is close OSU boosters may have already paid the officials off to help them win a NC game like they did with Miami all those years ago when Miami was clearly the better team. Also, If I recall correctly the last time we played OSU we whipped them 33 to 0 in a bowl game!  Maybe if OSU scheduled Vanderbilt that would help them to get prepared to play our power house schools they might be able to beat them at the beginning of the season. lol

Popular sentiment seems to indicate that Michigan and Penn State now suck, but recent history indicates otherwise. As said above, Michigan (third in the big ten last year) beat a great Florida team last year, Penn State beat Tennessee two years ago and won the Orange bowl the year before that........ indicating that over the last three years Florida/Auburn is a pretty accurate comparison to Michigan and Penn State....... but many out there just can't accept that there are good programs that aren't in the SEC........

Man this thread got dirty!  Druticus, you do have some history on your side to compare Michigan and Florida, I mean Michigan did beat Florida just last year.  But Auburn and Florida are going ot be MUCH better then Michigan this year.

Yo druticus...

are you wearing your "Red Nose" you freakin KLOWN!! ??

you are correct however - beating florida and auburn is NOTHING like cruising thru Loyd Carrs teams or even "yesteryears" team Penn State...if you have a pulse you know that UF and Auburn have been head & shoulders above those 2 "Little 10" has-beens...SERIOUSLY - how do you expect anyonme to even take u seriously?? !!

certainly UM should make strides - but likely not in year 1 of an offense that nobody in michigan has ever dreamed of seeing in the big house - and Jo Pa...GREAT character guy - but the glory days are LOOONNGGG gone!

talk about  "Homer statements" if you R gonna be a "Little 10" Homer...at least try to make it believable---my 2 best friends are each Michigan & Ohio Steta fans...AND they think you sound like a KLOWN too!!

Get real and then bring some heat son!

Normally I'm happy being the "Underdawg", but being "Top Dawg" is a good thing too!

Overrated....Georgia....I don't think so! Overrated is the crappy QB for Florida....the Heisman last year was a joke, more of a popularity contest than anything. Georgia will come out on top & this year we will get in the National Championship game, like we should have been last year! There will also be a lot of SAD Gator fans in Jacksonville come Nov. 1!!
