Georgia, you're on the clock

Posted on: August 1, 2008 10:03 pm

So now it's on for Georgia, a program that has never been a preseason No. 1.

The Bulldogs debuted at on top of the coaches' poll Friday, which is nice for about 13 seconds in the SEC. Now the pressure builds. The Bulldogs will face something eight coaches this season who have won national championships. The schedule is tougher than breakfast steak. And how weird is this: Florida is ranked No. 5 but was picked over Georgia in the preseason media poll to win the SEC.

Only two teams in the last 10 years have gone wire to wire, USC in 2004 and Florida State in 1999.

The good news: Five of the last six preseason No. 1s in the coaches' poll have at least played in the BCS championship game. USC broke a streak of five in a row last season.

The breakdown of the last six preseason No. 1s:

2002: Miami lost the BCS championship game to Ohio State

2003: Oklahoma lost the BCS championship game to LSU

2004:  USC beat Oklahoma (preseason No. 2) in the BCS championship game

2005: USC lost the BCS championship game to Texas

2006: Ohio State lost the BCS championship game to Florida

2007: No. 2 LSU beat Ohio State (preseason No. 10) in the BCS championship game. Preseason No. 1 USC finished No. 2 in the coaches poll.

Georgia, you're on the clock

This idea that somehow the SEC is the only league that plays soft teams OOC is crazy. All teams play some easy opponents. But the SEC has its share of tough games. Just last year:

Florida State x 2
South Florida
Oklahoma State
Louisville
Missouri
West Virginia
Clemson
California
Wake Forest
Virginia Tech
Troy x 3

Next three years (many of these are multi-year and/or home/away series):

West Virginia
Clemson (multiple teams)
Penn State
Florida State
Miami of Florida
Hawaii
Troy
Texas (multiple teams)
TCU
Oregon (multiple teams)
Oklahoma
Nebraska
Connecticut
Wake Forest
Georgia Tech (multiple teams)

Here is Georgia's out of conference heavy-weights in years to come (and some in the past for reference):

Clemson - '02, '03, '13, '14
Colorado - '06, '10
Oklahoma State - '07, '09
Arizona State - '08, '09
Louisville - '11, '12
Oregon - '15, '16

Add to that a rivalry game each year against Ga Tech.

Our regular rotation we play each year includes:

Florida
Tennessee
Auburn
South Carolina
Kentucky

this year we get

Alabama
LSU

Get your facts straight ... neither UGa nor the SEC is ducking anyone.

Georgia, you're on the clock

UGA chokes almost as bad as the Buckeyes in big games.  SEE TERRENCE EDWARDS IN 2003!  HAHAHAHA

You nailed it! They are all great in their conference. Run up great numbers look like the best in the land and cannot be stopped. Then Bang!!! We were looking ahead to another losing side of a blowout and we forget to play our last game. We know what USC did to that team. We know what LSU did to Ohio State and their great Heisman QB. Everyone would love to play your schedule. Our whole conference would set a record for Heisman hopefuls. I believe one of them was running for his life in each of the last two BCS games. Explain why that never happened all year. Nice numbers against teams who beat you when? Miami is your only claim to fame. Lost onene of two to Texas. Florida killed you. LSU killed you. Oh! You have beaten Michigan five straight years or more. Pat White, Tebow and Moreno all have more talent. Thanks GSD!

I see South Carolina as a big time threat. They may make some noise and the coach is hell on the big teams in the SEC.

Where was that defense against Stanford or a running QB from Texas? It did look good against Illinois but they came from the same type conference. One team wins it every single year. Not much to worry about when you have the better talent and have no losing records against anyone in your conferences. That is why they took Illinois over Georgia right? Your ducks need to keep people healthy and you cannot do that in your conference. See how healthy they would be playing in the SEC. Who has won the Pac 10 over the last five years? I rest my case. It will never happen in a balanced conference or one that plays a championship. That is spew!!!

I wasn't aware that you were on the Heisman ballot voting poll to appoint Beanie Wells as the front runner. I would think Tebow, Pat White, and Moreno are ahead of Wells. And I've heard this same song and dance from OSU before and it's way played out.

Hey Buckeye Haters,...you don't want to see Ohio State in the National Championship this year, believe that!

With Eighteen (18) returning starters including Heisman frontrunner, Beanie Wells, running the ball, your best bet is to "hope" USC wins week 3 and then cry to the media if they don't to try and keep them out. Otherwise,..it looks to me that a third time will be the CHARM!

Georgia, you're on the clock

true kingj...and that was David Cutcliff who was @ Ols Miss...yes, Sly is quietly getting that team into contention...however, it;s the same ole story...ALL SEC teams make life tough come sat. afternoon...which is the biggest obstacle UGA faces...truely the schedule from Hell! But...if we are successful WITH that miserable schedule,...certainly yhere willl be no denying the fact that UGA belongs i n NC!!   I really believe that the way UGA was playing @ end of last year...USC would have had their hands full, not to mention their face masks!

Let the games begin!!!
