Georgia, you're on the clock

Posted on: August 1, 2008 10:03 pm

So now it's on for Georgia, a program that has never been a preseason No. 1.

The Bulldogs debuted at on top of the coaches' poll Friday, which is nice for about 13 seconds in the SEC. Now the pressure builds. The Bulldogs will face something eight coaches this season who have won national championships. The schedule is tougher than breakfast steak. And how weird is this: Florida is ranked No. 5 but was picked over Georgia in the preseason media poll to win the SEC.

Only two teams in the last 10 years have gone wire to wire, USC in 2004 and Florida State in 1999.

The good news: Five of the last six preseason No. 1s in the coaches' poll have at least played in the BCS championship game. USC broke a streak of five in a row last season.

The breakdown of the last six preseason No. 1s:

2002: Miami lost the BCS championship game to Ohio State

2003: Oklahoma lost the BCS championship game to LSU

2004:  USC beat Oklahoma (preseason No. 2) in the BCS championship game

2005: USC lost the BCS championship game to Texas

2006: Ohio State lost the BCS championship game to Florida

2007: No. 2 LSU beat Ohio State (preseason No. 10) in the BCS championship game. Preseason No. 1 USC finished No. 2 in the coaches poll.

Georgia, you're on the clock

Mississipt St.  will be the sleeper team in the SEC this season!  There Qb started as a true freshman last season and there defense is one of the best in the conference.  There coach Sylvester Croom has gotten Ron Zook/UF, Mike Shula/UA and whoever the coach was at Ole Miss fired in the last 3 years while building the program backup.  This team has a chance to compete for the SEC West title.

The fact is UGA will be number one for at least the next 6 to 7 weeks, so I'll enjoy all the slings and arrows. I can take it, in fact, I love it, everyone is talking UGA football. I'm looking forward to the season, and who knows if the Dawgs will be in Miami. This I do know, this is UGA's best chance at a NC in 25 years, so, I have nothing to be down about and everything to be excited about. I think UGA is loaded for bear, but we'll find out when toe meets leather.

Personally, I don't see why any school would want to play USC in the Rose Bowl anyway!  That is a home game for them why didn't USC come play UGA in the Sugar Bowl on a neutral field?  I actually wanted UGA to play USC I knew Hawaii was a joke it was embarassing that we had to be on the same field with them for me just because everyone was hoping for another Oklahoma, Boise St. game!  The Rose Bowl is a great bowl but I wouldn't want to play USC on there home field!  I mean for real that is where they play all there home games they wanted to stay in the Rose Bowl and play illinois a team they new they could whip!  If they wanted UGA so bad they should have said we will play you in the Sugar Bowl!

Well Phil, you're actually the one team in the SEC that plays quality OOC games every year, and yes you've won the big. In regards to my accomplishments, they're totally insignificant.....which is why I don't criticize the "pride and honor" of athletes significantly better than I am like that of Gadawg1. Anyway, is there a sleeper in the SEC this year, obviously UGA, Fla and LSU are on the ESPN loverboy list, but who's good that's not getting any press? Tennessee, USC?

Unlike many who criticize the Pac-10, I think the top half of the conference always has a few good teams that would be competitive anywhere.  Unto a class of its own, however, is certainly USC.  They are a program that has earned expectations to compete for the national title each year and certainly would be in the running to win the SEC every year.

That said, I do believe the SEC has the most talent from top to bottom.  More important, I believe the biggest reason the SEC rules the roost is that the culture and fan base of the conference is second to none.  There are individual schools around the country with great enthusiasm for their teams, but I do believe that SEC football means the most to its fans as a conference.  That elevates the conference more than anything else.  And frankly, the hype about SEC getting too much attention may be the result of the SEC not getting enough just a few years ago.  When Auburn missed out on the title game a few years ago, it seemed ludicrous at best.  In any case, the SEC has begun to amp up its non-conference schedule as well.  USC deserves props for taking on a variety of non-conference schools, but note that the SEC is expanding.  In addition, it really is true that the in-conference schedule causes pressure to not add many big games out of conference.  For example, USC simply can't qualify its Pac-10 schedule as comparable to, for example, UGA's SEC schedule this year (including Florida, Tennessee, LSU, Auburn, and Bama).

UGA is worthy of #1 pre-season consideration.  The talent level is high, coaching is great, and the team momentum just simply seems to be there.  They are certainly going to face a schedule where over half the teams could feasibly beat them, but I think the Dawgs at their best will be a damn tough team to beat.  Forget the talk about Knowshon and Staffrod; If they get a pass rush roling this year, their defense will be brutal.  Better yet, their best players are sophomores and juniors, so UGA is going nowhere from title consideration in the near future.

Hold your tongue! You have to win a big one first. That one against Miami is still in question? How about some interference? So really what have you done? Just wondering? You guys are just a ESPN loverboy. We all now vestboy can't win the big one

Wishing you the best,
